Re: [bomp] Holy crap I'm lost...

Hmmm,

As far as I know, the first UFO was "Flying' which has loads of spacey
guitar. They really rock out a bit more on some of the live stuff contained
on the "Space Metal" 2 LP comp (including aforementioned "Flying". On the
other hand, "Phenomenon" is their first with guitarist Michael Schenker and
it's very good IMHO. "Force It" and "No Heavy Petting" are also decent UFO
from the mid-70's. I really dug "Lights Out" from around '77 which even
includes a great cover of Love's "Alone Again Or". But that one's also got
more keyboars and strings, so it isn't quite as guitar-oriented, but great
songs nevertheless. And for a good 70's sampling, check out the double live
"Strangers In The Night".

Speaking of double live LP's, you might want to check around for "On Your
Feet or On Your Knees" by Blue Oyster Cult (along with the first 3 ESSENTIAL
studio LPs) or Scorpions' "Tokyo Tapes". The earliest Scorpions (Lonesome
Crow) with Michael Schenker was again a bit too spacey, jammy and boring for
me, so I prefer stuff like "Virgin Killers" from the mid-70's.

Early Judas Priest is also good, with "Sad Wings of Destiny" featuring
super-heavy guitars and over-the-top Halford vocal screaming. "Sin After
Sin" is an excellent showcase for terrific Simon Phillips drumming and a
cool rockin' version of Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust".

And finally, for more superb hard rock drum work, definitely look for the
self-titled "Captain Beyond" featuring Bobby Caldwell on the skins and
post-Deep Purple Rod Evans (the guy who sang "Hush"). Caldwell also played
a few years later on the "Armageddon" LP featuring Keith Relf on vocals in
the mid-70's

Not sure if this will be up your nephew's alley entirely, but you might be
able to listen to some samples on-line to get a sense of whether it'll be
his cup o' tea.

If he digs more bluesy or Hendrixy or boogie-rock sounds, then your getting
into Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher or Foghat territory.

Hope this helps.

Squirrely.
