"In the first place, there is D.J. culture, with its nerdy machismo, where
the
size of your collection definitely matters. 'The people that D.J.s look up
to
are the people that, they play a set and you dont know even one record,' Mr.
Dier said."

It's not just DJs, but collectors, writers (full-time critics as well as
bloggers) and people who dwell on lists like this. The lure of the obscure
and the sheer thrill of one-upsmanship all feed into this 'nerdy machismo.'

It's fun and educational, but though having far fewer records than this guy,
even I know that at some point a line gets crossed where it becomes more of a
burden than it should.

It's hard for me to feel sorry for those who complain about having too many
records and not enough life.B

When you start becoming a capital-C Collector, you stop being a fan, and you
stop being able to differentiate between good and bad. You start accumulating
all sorts of SHIT just to have a collection, without regards to whether it's
your taste or not - you just collect because it's THERE. And these are the
same people who bitch later on about "oh, I need to quit record collecting,
I'm not fulfilled, I need a life, yadda yadda yadda." There's another e-group
I'm on where every six months, like clockwork, somebody posts a crybaby "I'm
quittin' rekkid collecting" thread.

Ah, who forced you to buy all those wack records in the first place, bro? Who
told you it was a good idea to buy multiple copies of the same record? I'm as
big of a record buyer B as anybody, and even I take advantage of the customer
turntable so I don't wind up bringing home trash.
