We're out in the sticks here, and friends "get away
with" a deep funk night once a month (occasionally
infiltrated by choice R and/or B cuts) at a club full
of young people who'd normally otherwise be out for
hip-hop or house music or whatever. I've no idea
myself of what most of the funk tracks being spun are,
but I'm pretty sure that the bulk of the crowd had no
prior experience of, say, "It's Your Voodoo Working"
by Charles Sheffield or "I'm Shakin'" by Little Willie
John before they inevitably hit the floor to them.
We've thrown successful Northern soul nights there,
fer chrissakes. That Sheer Magic night @ Danny's in
Chicago is a weekly weekend club night in the guise of
a monthly weekday bar night. It can be done ...
