Re: [bomp] Re: SXSW Bomp-worthy

Oh yeah, there are always a ton of day shows and "unofficial showcases"...my band usually ends up playing one whether we have an official slot or not. This year we're taking it easy, I guess--one "real" showcase and straight to the bar.

Many of these day shows are fantastic second opportunities to see bands that are otherwise scheduled at the same time as some other show you wanna' catch. Also a good chance to see 'em twice, or in an up close environment. And there's usually free beer.

Apparently there's some footage floating around of me and some other locals at a Mooney Suzuki in-store where the audience was crammed right up against the band. The Rezillos played at a record store once and so did the Stooges.

Then there's the pathetic downside. So-called "showcases" in the parking lot of a Garden Supply store. At a Mexican Sports Bar 6 or 7 miles north of downtown. Or on Wednesday afternoon before anyone arrives. Sadly, I am not exaggerating, this happens every year.

Hey Bob -

Most of the SXSW bands I mentioned are part of the official festival showcase, but a couple you may not have seen on the official schedule because they are playing "unofficial" splinter events.? Some bands, including The Ugly Beats, are playing both types of events.

A good list of these "side show" events can be found here: http://www.austin360.com/music/content/music/stories/2008/02/0221sxswside.html

(Also, my mentions do not constitute a critical endoresement!)

Can't wait to get down there...

Both the Boss Martians and the Donnas were here a couple years ago and both seemed to be on a serious 1970's kick with mixed results.? Boss Martians sounded kinda' like Cheap Trick so I stuck around.? The Donnas were doing a lot of dull hard rock so I left.? Anyone know whether their schtick has improved?

?

Dollyrots and Baby Shakes?...Stems??...guess I'd better take a better look at the schedules.?

No Stooges and Buzzcocks this time, but there's always?*something* going on.

?

An aside to Blair B: Teachers in Austin schools always get Spring Break during SXSW.? You might wanna' consider moving south....

I know the Cynics and Paul Collins Beat are returning, and they're on the same showcase as the Ugly Beats. Joe can verify, but I think the "Antones" appearance is an in-store at Antones Records, not at the bar called Antone's. I will plug the Wednesday night showcase at Red Eyed Fly for two reasons-- 1) Shameless self-promotion, The Bad Rackets are on the bill and b) Naked Raygun is headlining. See The Mullens if you have not already done so. Can't remember which night/venue but they're coming. Seems like I've missed several others, somebody please chime in.
