Re: [bomp] Re: Pete Townshend - King Rabbit Demo

Hi all ! Out from lurking under my mushroom ... I think Laura was
actually referring to the old Pete Townshend demo " King Rabbit " which is a
demo
Pete recorded around the time of the " Happy Jack " LP ... it never wound up
on an official Who release, and as it's really not all that brilliant a song,
more a " sketch or doodle ", I doubt Pete may have ever even brought it to the
Who for possible consideration. The song crops up quite often on Townshend and
Who bootlegs ( that Mono Edition digipak " Sell Out " has it as a bonus track
), usually listed as a Townshend demo, but it's been listed as a Who demo
occasionally as well, and I think Laura mentioned she had a CD-R with the
song
on it, so it's quite possible she was unaware it's just a Pete demo. Anyway
here's Pete in his own words about " King Rabbit " :

" I suppose this little demo, recorded around the time of Happy Jack - (like
Lazy, Fat People above) - was simply a test of some recording trick I was
developing at the time. The time was late 1967 [sic - mid-late 1966]. My
studio was on the top floor of a flat in Soho, the corner of Brewer Street
and Wardour Street. I used a couple of Vortexion stereo recorders, bouncing
from machine to machine. Silly words. Quite nice music though.

If I look at what was going on at the time maybe I can work out what spurred
me to produce so many 'nonsense' songs then. The Who were in their early
days working very hard indeed on the road, mainly playing shows in the UK
and Scandinavia. I was just 22 years old and I think sometimes after hard
and serious Who show, and a lot of driving, I just wanted to relax, play
music, and be stupid. " Pete Townshend

Well there ya go gang ... mystery solved ... and if anyone's interested I'll
be glad to add " King Rabbit " and " Lazy, Fat People " to the files ...

relax, enjoy and float downstream ... moreen
