According to the liner notes of "Highs in the Mid-60s, Vol. 2: L.A.
'66," the W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band did the first
version of this song. The tune was written by Boyce and Hart, two
songwriters who "shopped" their tunes to prospective bands, much like
the way "Wild Thing" was given to the Troggs (or, if you believe their
story, that it was found by their manager in a pile of demo acetates),
of "I Had Too Much To Dream last Night" and so forth were given to the
Electric Prunes by the Tucker/Mantz songwriting team.
