A very good point. When investigating the US 60s garage scene it is
*essential* to listen to the British Invasion bands that influenced the
groups on Garage Punk compilations. In other words the DC5, Animals,
Yardbirds, Stones, Pretty Things, Them etc. How many pictures of suburban
US bands are complete rip-offs of DC5 album covers. For instance look at
the of the shots Basement Wall on the Cicadelic reissue.
I have a very good friend who was recently bowled over by the Joe Meek
phenomenon. This guy will relay countless tales about David Johns & The
Mood, the Buzz, Screaming Lord Sutch, Crawdaddys and other Meek bands.
However quiz him about classic (ie top thirty) cuts from the period and a
glazed expression suddenly appears. It's really a little strange for
someone to rave about 'Crawdaddy Simone' but have little conception of the
magnificence of 'Over Under Sideways Down' or 'Mystic Eyes'. As you
Americans say... GO FIGURE!
By the way the same chap found a copy of 'Gloria' by the Wheels for 10p in a
bargain bin a couple of years ago. Many facts about the bands
collectability and the records price tag were mentioned before the disc was
cleaned up and sold for a nice sum. Some folks take on music and record
collecting is very puzzling to me sometimes. How I wish they would spend
their money on half a dozen great compilations than on one single by an
obscure UK Freakbeat band. You simply limit your exposure to great music
otherwise.
