Rockin' Robin Roberts
Hello Bomp-listers!
As some of you may know, 1997 marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic
death of Rockin' Robin Roberts, the legendary singer on the Wailers'
version of "Louie, Louie." Robin was killed in a car accident in the
Bay Area in December 1967.
Robin's remains are buried in the old Tacoma Cemetery beneath a tiny
headstone hardly befitting such an important figure in Northwest rock
'n' roll history. In a year when Jimi Hendrix and other Seattle
musicians are being honored with a Paul Allen-financed, multi-million
dollar interactive museum, we feel it is high time to pay tribute to
Robin, whose shows at places like the Spanish Castle and the Evergreen
Ballroom are an important part of garage rock history!
We are looking for interested fans and bands who would contribute to a
benefit to buy Robin a larger headstone. Jeff Miller, a Tacoma music
historian, has suggested a large marker that could accommodate a
"Louie, Louie" 45 encased in tempered glass. We think that's a great
idea, but it will cost money. A little background: Robin has no
surviving family members, as far as we know. His mother was debilitated
by her son's tragic death and died shortly thereafter. He graduated
from Tacoma's Stadium High School in 1958 and eventually earned a
Master's Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon. And last
but not least, he is single-handedly responsible for the great line
before the "Louie, Louie" guitar solo: "Let's give it to 'em right
now!" We hope we can count on your support, especially if you're in the
Northwest. Thanks for reading this.
