Fake live albums (was: Kasenatz-Katz Singing Circus album, anyone want it?)
The Who - Magic Bus on Tour - No fake audience, but was touted as a live
album.
Joey Dee and the Starliters - The Peppermint Twisters - Not only does it
have overdubbed crowd noise through all of the songs, but it also features
the same applause between songs, which is detectable by hearing someone
playing the same chord on a piano.
The most famous is the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper..." in spots, of course.
45s:
Farmer John - The Premiers - Fake venue this time. This wasn't recorded at
the Rhythm Room in Fullerton, California, but rather in a studio with
friends. The stereo version has an emcee introducing them, the mono single
does not. The single also does not have the women yelling something in
Spanish in mid-song.
Skinny Legs and All - Joe Tex - According to Dave Marsh, the record is a
crowd of people listening to a tape in the studio after enjoying a meal and
some liquor.
My theories on why the Kingsmen had so many fake live albums are these:
due to their hit of Louie, Louie being a rehearsal tape, people (including
the folks at their record company?) thought that if they were live, then
they could forgive errors in playing. The Kingsmen certainly could play
(J.A.J. is a rather tricky instrumental), but "Louie, Louie" loomed ("lou"
med?) over them, so they were thought of as a raucous, loose band. I
remember listening to Goddard's Gold on KCBQ in San Diego and he had
thought that "Louie, Louie" was recorded in front of an audience. Plus,
live albums were starting to become big sellers, as evinced by James
Brown's "Live at the Apollo" album.
Thanks to everybody for the feedback on O'Keeffe! It seems that what I
have is a movie called "Shout!" which is a docudrama. I am guessing this
was a miniseries. To bolster what people have been saying about the
clean-cut stars on his show, the intro on the tape is by the
hard-rockin'...Helen Reddy!
Brian "I just said Helen Reddy on the Bomp! list!" Phillips
