Anybody know if there are any plans to put out domestically CDs of Sam
the Sham and/or ? and the Mysterians?

And on the same subject what about the Crime and Monks discs that were
supposed to come out on ONion (Johann Kugelburg--who used to be the head
asst. at Matador) earlier this year?

Recently heard that one of the guys from Radio Birdman (Deniz Tek, I
suspect) has put together a surf or intrumental band of sorts, & even
shipped a tape off to the Mermen's guitarist. This, I would like to
hear. Anyone know which ex-Birdman or have a more extensive lowdown?

hear hear! yes i'd love to be able to pick up sam/sham and pharoahs stuff
these days. there was an article on him recently in a texas newspaper,
talking about how he found religion. he evidently disavows his r'n'r past,
although he is supposed to be a friendly guy.

speaking of reissues, why haven't the saints or radio birdman been reissued
domestically? not to mention the first couple of skids records! geepers!
there's so much great stuff that came out on sire in the 70's that needs to be
reissued.

which actually brings up another item: if anyone knows where i can find a
copy of the Saints' "1-2-3-4" ep please email me. (it's a great 4-song 7"
that came out very early in their career - has 2 early versions of tunes from
their first lp -unavailable anywhere now- as well as 2 non-lp songs which have
since been reissued).

thanks,
joe

You asked about "which Birdman has an instrumental surf band" etc. It
is Warwick Gilbert and the band is called The Raouls. Warwick was (is)
Radio Birdmans' bass player, but he was a six string gtr slinger before
and after. The Raouls are getting known around Sydney and have opened
for Dick Dale, Link Wray and other notables. I saw them in Sydney last
January and they were tremendous. BTW Chris Masuak is their drummer...
we might have to terminate his membership in the guitar players club,
as my mate Kent Steedman would say.

A couple of years back I saw a newsgroup posting from someone who I believe
was Howie Klein. I asked about Saints reissues via email and was told that Sire
no longer had the rights to that stuff. After hearing that I started looking
for imports, and I was lucky enough to get an Australian EMI CD of the 2nd
album, which is the one I really wanted.

I've seen Saints reissues from Fan Club/New Rose, but I can't comment on the
quality. I do own a CD from the Fan Club label that's mastered from vinyl,
which makes me wary...

I think the 1st Skids was available a few years back. Haven't seen it for a
long time though.

Hey,
Speaking of overdue reissues, before this thing crashed someone mentioned
that there's an Electric Prunes comp covering the first two LPs in the
works (not "A Long Day's Flight", this was some domestic job). Is there
anymore word on this?

For Radio Birdman, simply, there ARE several labels that want to do
reissues in America. It is a matter of sorting out who has legal
copyright to it. If it was up to the band, we'd give it to Bomp in a
heartbeat, but the current copyright holder in Australia is afraid of
legal consequences from Sire, and short of a sufficient financial
inducement it's hard to get them to move. The band is saving up for a
legal fund to try to regain these copyrights ourselves. It wont happen
without a battle.

BTW two things of possible interest: Sonically superior versions of
both albums with previously unreleased extra tracks were released in
Australia on RedEye / Polydor last Nov. (REDCD49 and REDCD53) Also, we
just finished mixes on a new live album which the band DOES own
outright. We recorded it on our recent reformation tour. At least that
one should see the light of day in America before too long.

I think that was me who posted about it. Warners have found a heap of
unreleased tapes, and what's more, they're in touch with the band members,
who have additional acetates, etc. A boffo reissue is in the works, with
liner notes by Sonic Boom (no less!) who has already interviewed the band. He
let me hear some of the unreleased tapes too, and the stuff blows away
anything I've heard by them before. No idea when this will be out, but these
things tend to take a little while. My guess is sometime next year.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the good words, and it's cool to see you taking an active role on
the Bomp mailing list.

Is there really concern about Sire? I really doubt they still have any
rights, or they'd probably have reissued the stuff by now. Howie Klein is a
good guy and I think he would probably give a straight answer. I can't
believe that would hold up a deal; if you'd like me to look into it, I can.

I still haven't heard from John, though, and I'm hoping that's not a bad
sign. Meanwhile there are some new releases on Bomp that I'll be putting in
the mail to you

All the best

Greg
