Their song that began with "Acid is Groovy, Kill the Pigs" (which was the
legendary slogan scribbled on the wall by a Marine to try to pin his
murder of his wife on Manson-type hippies)
was a huge hit at the radio station I used to run. It was one of the 80s
punk meets Stooges works which really caught on and to me helped
usher in the era of grunge. In fact, the noisier stuff does compare well
to early Mudhoney.

The sad truth about that band is you can't be hugely sucessful if you
stay in Bethlehem- had they moved to NYC or even Philly they would've
had a much greater impact than they did. Because all kinds of DJs loved
that one song.

Just 14 is also a really good song despite it's obvious pedophilic leanings.

Dave Stein is the only person I've ever seen who ate a second slice of
the terrible 9:30 club pizza, he may have even had a third slice...

Both the Saints "I'm Stranded" and "Eternally Yours" have been reissued
on CD in the last few years. I've seen 'em at Tower. Also check out the
"Most Primitive Band In The World" CD (on Hot) which is pre-first LP
demos from '74.

Oh yeah... a bit more on the Sins:

I think one of the greatest things about them is how they take their
influences and use them as a launching point. I find it hard to see how
anyone could ever truly call them revivalists or retro (the way many
people do about other modern garage, etc. oriented acts.) Their music is
truly their own.

As for live shows... I know they'll be at Brownies in NYC on Friday June
28th, playing with The Swingin' Neckbreakers, Satan's Pilgrims, & The
Cowslingers.

I think they would have had a great impact if they'd actually
done more touring. Bethlehem is only an hour from Philly and about an
hour and a half from NYC, so that's not a big deal. Heck, they played
NYC at least as often as many local bands (often more) in the '88-'92
period. Meanwhile, they usually only played Bethlehem once or twice a
month (I know, I usually drove out.) In fact, they played the Big Kahuna
in the summer of '88 about 4-5 times. And that's not even counting other
NYC bookings in the same period. But, like I said, they didn't tour
enough. I know they did one or two tours of the southeastern states, and
they played various Northeastern spots on a regular basis (still do);
they even did some touring in Europe (Stein asked me to go along as
driver for a European tour, but I had a job that didn't give me enough
vacation to swing it.) But they just didn't do it enough. To really get
popular, you've gotta constantly push, playing your way across the US &
Europe on a fairly regular basis, plus get your record played, *and*
promote yourselves well.

I think that's only one level to read the song at... Yeah, sure,
there's the lyric, "She's just 14 and I don't care / We're gonna do
everything..."

However, I've always gotten the feeling that there was much more
to it... some of these lyrics I believe may not be included in the song,
or maybe they were only printed on the sleeve, or maybe I remember them
from the last "movement" of "Coca Cola (Sweet)", when JT is saying "She
was just 14 / She is walking home from school / She is everything that
has gone wrong with America / I love her, I want to hurt her..." But
she's Just 14. I found that conflict to be interesting. The narrator
(not necessarily JT, but the *narrator*) sees this girl, looks at her,
the way she dresses, wears her hair, carries herself... her being, and
just sees what she will become and why... and he hates it. But at the
same time, he sees a girl who's obviously young and pretty, with what
*should* be so many possibilities; he loves that. But even with all
those possibilities, it looks like the path she's going to take will be
that horrible one... right down the same lousy path as everyone else.
And he wants to hurt *that*... which she's the embodiment of.

Here's the words printed on the back of "Just 14" (the ones JT speaks in
"Coca Cola (Sweet)":

"The sun is very bright
SHE is walking home from school, all dressed in white
I think about being WHITE
I think about being a man
SHE is just 14.
SHE is everything that has gone wrong with AMERICA.
I love her, I want to hurt her
(I don't expect YOU to understand this, but try anyway)
Our eyes meet and I can see her LIFE is already over.
I FEEL sad.
But then I have a COKE and everything's all right."

(all caps reprinted as on the sleeve.)

Oh yeah, as to the Coca-Cola stuff, besides the song, JT once did a great
pamphlet on Coke. I wish he'd really done it in depth, though, research
and all... he would've written a fantastic book.

A long time ago I heard of a Japanese book which gave discographies
and biographies for all the famous Japanese Groups Sounds bands
(Golden Cups, Jaguars, Tigers, Spiders, etc).

The original e-mail I have about it gives the title of the book but not the
publisher, which I need to be able to order it from the US.

Hitomi- Do you have this book? Do you know where I can order this
book? Do you have any idea how much this book costs in Japan?

I also liked the Tigers Movie and the Spiders Movie- Do you have any
other movies or TV performances by 1960s Group Sounds bands?
What about any video of the Finger 5? (for American Bompster the
Finger 5 were on par with the Brady Bunch/ Partridge Family)
