So I have insomnia and not only catch Mike Vraney's "Reel Wild Cinema"
on the USA network feat. horribly shopped and mangled clips from films
which are little more than ads for Something Weird releases. what band
did Mike Vraney used to manage anyway- why would I have talked to
him?
then I change the channel to see my old neighbor Pat Carrol "hosting"
Neat Stuff on the Discovery Channel. Pat was somewhat responsible
for the Dr. Demento favorite "Rock & Roll Doctor" from the Travesty
Limited.

But for real- I picked up Collectibles Zakary Thaks cd and was pretty
much dissapointed. 1st off- it *was* only $10 new at Tower, so I new it
couldn't blow me away... but the layout was kinda crummy- just 2
photos!? and the liner notes were wooden at best (the name Zakary
Thaks came from their guitarist who saw a similar name in a book- can't
dig any deeper than that? a "book?"). Musically the cd goes from the
ZT's early beatlesque efforts to their not-so-interesting power-blues
single circa '68. The highlights are 3 songs from the same month they
came up with "Bad Girl" including the vicious "Daddy's Footsteps." But
what's the deal- the whole CD is only 40 minutes long- I have *video* of
more Zakary Thaks material not on the CD, let alone any outtakes or other
unreleased studio or live material from their vaultsl. Did Carl (J-Beck)
Becker totally not allow the Collectibles/ Cicadelic people any access to
any more material? Since the Zakary Thaks footage is always paired
with a Bad Seeds clip, would the source of the video have to be the
person who managed both bands? Sigh- if you're going to make a comp-
try like hell to do the best job possible, otherwise...

and the layout- between them and the computer happy Sundazed
reissues, I don't know. Weren't we all disgusted with the mid 70s
rockabilly reissues we'd see that had that crappy neon-ish 70s feel to
them- totally innapropriate for the music inside? someone tell me how
Sundazed E-Types and Music Machine reissues will look like anything but
someone's first attempts at desktop design in 5 yrs- at least they have
more liner notes and look better crafted... Just 'cuz the computer can do
a gimmick doesn't mean it should...

And speaking of the Music Machine- did I see newly religious Sean
Bonniwell try to say in liner notes that the "Eagle Never Hunts the Fly"
was *not* about Vietnam? yeah, right- so one more person we can't
trust to tell the "real" story of the garage era, even if he was there...
Although I'd still like Roky to do an autobio (esp w/o a ghostwriter)

Speaking of which- what the hell is the story with Tom Hank's movie-
"The Thing that You Do" about a teenage garage band who in Tom's
words "wanted to be the next Beatles, had a local hit, but went
nowhere." ?! He said on Entertainment Tonight that it was a movie he
always wanted to make, so he wrote, directed, and financed it. I'm more
than a little bummed 'cuz I had a garage band movie treatment sitting in
my closet that more than one agent said "would've been appropriate
some other time" (ie- people today wanted 'Dazed and Confused;' era
nostalgia). eh. that's what I get for not moving to LA. But my question
is- Does Tom have a band in his past? Anyone on the list ever sell him
records?

and lastly I picked up Sequel records "Paisley Pop" cd- 22 tracks, but
some of the brit pop-psyche is just too dull for words- why do I buy
these Euro reishes when what I want is English Freakbeat Volume 6?
There are approximately 5 good fuzzy psyche rock tracks by the likes of
Scruggs, the Onyx and other Bam Caruso faves...
but who are Sequel records and can anyone recommend any of their
other releases- like their 2 vol. "Pop" cds and their all female cds (way
too Lulu?)

Anyone know if Hasil Adkins is being convinced to do any more shows
besides July 26 at Maxwell's?

Does Neal Skok have email?

grumpily,

Don

Sequel was started by Castle Music, a huge budget reissue label sorta like
K-Tel. Their major holding is the old Pye catalog, which accounts for so many
Pye artists and the lack of crucial items from EMI and Decca in their series.
But given that, they seem to do a pretty good job, especially with American
artists and things they've licensed on their own. The label is run by Bob
Fisher, who used to be the UK editor for Bomp Magazine back in the 70s. A
collector and a good guy. But when it comes to UK pop/psych, there's only so
much they have access too. And yes, it continues to baffle me why labels like
Bam Caruso, with access to everything, always overlooked the rougher examples
of UK beat. Although this gap has been filled the past few years by other
labels, like 10th Planet, and the very cool Purple Heart Surgery series,
consistingly mostly of unissued UK R&B demos. Two volumes out so far that I
know of.
