Can anyone recommend the following Collectable reissues:
1. Blue Things Story, Vol 1 and Vol 2
2. Tempos
3. Bad Seeds

It's been a long time, but I'm glad this list is back in action.

Hi Mark
I have 2 and 3.
I like both of them.
As the reissue of Justice rabel,I like Tempos,Storeways,Starlitters.
They are crude and premitive gems.

I like 1st single of Bad Seeds.
This is compiled with the live recording of Zakary Thaks.

1 is selected from the ciacadelic 3 vols of Blue Things
(includeing their early era of Blue boys).

So I have insomnia and not only catch Mike Vraney's "Reel Wild Cinema"
on the USA network feat. horribly shopped and mangled clips from films
which are little more than ads for Something Weird releases. what band
did Mike Vraney used to manage anyway- why would I have talked to
him?
then I change the channel to see my old neighbor Pat Carrol "hosting"
Neat Stuff on the Discovery Channel. Pat was somewhat responsible
for the Dr. Demento favorite "Rock & Roll Doctor" from the Travesty
Limited.

But for real- I picked up Collectibles Zakary Thaks cd and was pretty
much dissapointed. 1st off- it *was* only $10 new at Tower, so I new it
couldn't blow me away... but the layout was kinda crummy- just 2
photos!? and the liner notes were wooden at best (the name Zakary
Thaks came from their guitarist who saw a similar name in a book- can't
dig any deeper than that? a "book?"). Musically the cd goes from the
ZT's early beatlesque efforts to their not-so-interesting power-blues
single circa '68. The highlights are 3 songs from the same month they
came up with "Bad Girl" including the vicious "Daddy's Footsteps." But
what's the deal- the whole CD is only 40 minutes long- I have *video* of
more Zakary Thaks material not on the CD, let alone any outtakes or other
unreleased studio or live material from their vaultsl. Did Carl (J-Beck)
Becker totally not allow the Collectibles/ Cicadelic people any access to
any more material? Since the Zakary Thaks footage is always paired
with a Bad Seeds clip, would the source of the video have to be the
person who managed both bands? Sigh- if you're going to make a comp-
try like hell to do the best job possible, otherwise...
Hi Don
Collectables release two more CD including Zakary Thaks.
One is the same sause of VIDEO
The Bad Seeds and The Zakary Thaks A texas Battle of the bands!
this include 6songs of Z Thaks,I don't know that is all of their video.
I read the interview of Cris(the vocalist) in '95 on the Twist &Shake 'zine.
Cris said they did not record live exept the Video. And he said also abot their
name"somebody saw it somewhere in a magazine"

One more CD is THE HISTORY OF TEXAS GARAGE BANDS IN THE '60S VOL5
   2songs are here.
Face to Face, p.unreleased rehatsal and single mix,SHAKE p.unreleased

I wonder why these songs are separated in 3 CD.
I think these must be compiled as one CD. Collectables did not good layout
another CD too.
I don't like sometimes they use artificial colour on monocrhome print.

Re those Collectables reissues: all the J-Beck series reissues (Bad
Seeds, Liberty Bell, Zakary Thaks are really cool, and have great
sound! I agree that their packaging leaves lots to be desired (like
real liner notes fer instance!), but the transfers are quite good. The
reiaaue of the Wailers' "Outburst," a highly overlooked garage classic,
I think, is great sounding, but the liner notes are slightly
incompetent. When Collectables got the rights to reissue this (they
bought the tapes from Capitol), they asked Lisa and I if we had a good
picture of that line-up (which we did), so we sent them an extra we had
and also offered to write some notes since we did the big Wailer thing
in Cryptic Tymes, but they used some other guy who got stuff (like
people's names!) wrong. Ugh! The Tempos thing is also real good, and if
anyone remembers the Crypt LP "best of" that came out a few years ago,
you' wanna hear this as well, although the Crypt one had way better
notes.

Since we're discussing the Stooges commercial, what about the Sex
Pistols ad for Mountain Dew ("Route 66")? It's been playing for awhile,
and when I first saw it I thought, "Ugh! It's some band with a guy
doing a bad Johnny Rotten imperosnation. The I found out it IS Johnny
Rotten-Lydon. Weird!!!! By the way, I heard the reformed Pistols played
for 30,000 people in England and I'm listening to Glen Matlock's new
solo LP on Creation as I type this. It's pretty good. Has anybody heard
the (Japanese) Remains or Jet Boys stuff he's produced? It's killer!!

I too was astounded by the Nike commercial featuring "Search and =
Destroy." I must admit that it was very well done and I enjoyed it! At =
least it was lots better than all the stupid beer ads. "Rebellion" is =
meaningless when it becomes part of the mainstream culture, when people =
like William Burroughs, Lou Reed, the Ramones, etc., are used to sell =
products. They themselves ARE product, as much as any millionaire =
British junkie hippie gods who dress up like pirates and endlessly =
recycle Chuck Berry licks. Against this background, the first generation =
rock'n'rollers like Chuck, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Sonny Burgess, =
Charlie Feathers, and so on, somehow seem to come out with their =

bullshit about not selling out or about "youth culture."

I still would like to see how any corporation will sell anything with =

Anyone know what happened to this fine Boston band? I walked into a
sparsley attended show at the 9:30 Club about 10 years ago, and these
guys - looking to be in their mid-teens at the time, were performing
some of the most intense rock 'n' roll I'd ever witnessed. I bought an
lp on the spot, and a year or so later I chanced upon another in a local
record shop. Anyone know what the band/members are up to: anything
new/old released on cd?

thank you, thank you very much

The bass player died in a tragic motorcycle accident just as they were
getting big and they disbanded. There was a reunion late last year or
early this year. I forget who filled in. Shreder in San Francisco did a
CD reissue that has their Homestead LP among other things.

Hello from Sunny Florida!

I am Rob Keith, guitarist for Tampa, Florida new wave rock band The
Baskervils. I have organized a compilation called "Young Savage Florida" that
will feature Florida resident and original drummer for Badfinger, Mike
Gibbins! These are the first solo ever from this rock n' roll legend! His
tracks are called "Dream Harder (Ballad of the Redcoats)" and "Layaway."
Both tracks feature Mike on lead vocals, the first of which over heavy Steve
Jones-ish guitar strummed by Screamin' Iguanas of Love/Nicoteens guitar
player Greg Reinel. "Layaway" is a lovely Badfinger styled mid-tempo rocker
with very pretty George Harrison-ish guitar leads. He recorded the tracks in
a home studio as demos for an upcoming full length release.
The compilation will also contain two songs each from the following Florida
based artists:
Baskervils, Car Bomb Driver, Edison Shine, Leonard Croon Band, Loco Siempre,
Vodkats, Hate Bombs, Escargot, Surf Kings, and The Rancid Polecats.
Quantities will be extremely limited- 1000 to 2000 copies worldwide! Release
date is set for June 15th.
To get on the "Young Savage Florida" mailing list, write to me by mail or

I read last week, in Marketing Age, that Diary Queen has bought the
rights to "God Save the Queen" in conjunction with their sponsoring the
'96 Sex Pistols reunion tour. According to the article, "'We (Diary Queen)
see the re-emergence of such a vital act as the Sex Pistols, as a
confirmation of our line of quality products.', said David Emerson.
Emerson, the former Director of Asian Marketing for EMI, was recently
name Senior Vice-President of Operations and Communications for Diary
Queen, Inc."

Unfortunately, one of the brothers died in a car accident some years
back. It was a great loss; they were a *fantastic* group. Most of their
material has been reished on CD, I think by Shredder. I just have these
great memories of "Sister Serena". And the "Gimme The Shakes" single
(that song was later covered live by The Pussywillows).

A friend of mine was about 15 when she lived in Boston in an apartment
directly above the band's practice space. She tells me she was pretty
much nuts about them all.

Now _that_ takes me back. The Dogmatics were a stalwart of the Boston bar
band drinkin' scene in the early 80's and gave the Del Fuegos a run for the
most shattered live shows I saw in those days. You're right, they rocked.
The bass player died in a motorcycle accident south of Boston in maybe the
late 80's. He seemed to me to be the spark and voice of excess in the
Dogmatics. The remaining members have had at least one reunion show a few
years back and I might expect they'd do it again since other bands from
that era are currently putting things together: The Outlets, The Freeze,
Gang Green, etc. Not sure about record availability. Seeya, Kevin

Yes, there is a new Dogmatics CD out. Well not new, a reissue of 2lps, and
it rocks. There was a reunion show a few months back at The Rat (in Kenmore
Sq., Boston) that was great.

Also, in response to another post:
Satan's Pilgrims will be in Boston this Sunday (June 30) with The Time Beings
at the Middle East, Upstair. Should be a great show.

Subject: Teen Scene #55 e-mail version is out.

After something like 7 months, the new version of The Teen Scene
is finally ready, at least in e-mail form. (The print version may not
appear till next week. When that time comes, I'll let you all know what
the price will be.)

If you've seen it before, you know the Teen Scene is dedicated to
garage/punk, power pop, surf, mod, etc., mainly of the Today's Scene
variety, but that's slowly changing, as well.

#55 includes interviews by Bob Kondrak with The Drags,
Teengenerate, and Alex Cuervo (bassist for Blacktop and now the King
Sound Quartet), plus articles on the Greek Scene (courtesy of bomp-lister
Cristopher Kakkos), The Outsiders (see, some original garage material!)
courtesy of the maintainer of the Outsiders' Touch homepage, Filippo
Dulio, Radio Birdman's performance at the Big Day Out in Perth by Michael
Seman, a memoriam piece on Jeffrey Lee Pierce by LJ Cunningham, Bill
Luther introducing us to the Omega Men, plus me on all sorts of stuff
from Ray Davies to the Nomads, Aqua Velvets (*not* the SF surf group),
what the Devil Dogs are up to now, plus lotsa record reviews (including a
long one on the Untamed Youth Untamed Melodies CD.)

All it takes to get the e-mail version is a request to me at
