>Which of their CD reissues is worth getting? Is their anything domestic?

I have an import (German, the label is Line) compilation called *Full Force*
that gives a good representation of the band's day's Etiquette. Not
exceptional but not bad. I picked this disk up several years ago because
is was the only Sonics CD I could find at the time. Since then Etiquette
(domestic) has issued a comprehensive collection called "Here Are The
Ultimate Sonics".

In addition, I picked up a copy of "Maintaining My Cool" on the Jerden
(domestic) label. This compilation pretty much covers the band's days
with the Jerden label. Some great cuts and an absolutely horrendous
cover of *Hanky Panky*.....(these were the same guys who covered
*Sweet Pea*????).

>From what I have heard the Etiquette release should not be missed, but if
you can't find it, I can recommend the other two.

Wow! The Time Beings are *still* together??!!! Have they
released any 45s I can get a hold of? I saw them about 5 years back at
Flannery's in NYC (when Gary Balaban was still booking shows there) and I
thought they were great.
Is Reverend Joe (Longone, who published Fuzbrains and then did a
book called *The Great Rock'n'Roll Survey (1980s)*) still managing them?
If so, someone please tell him I said hello.

Thanks for the reply, grim though it was. I'll have to look out for the
cd. It seems the 1st lp has taken a hike from my colection, Everybody
Does It is all I have left, played it when I got home last night. I'm
probably just getting old, but listening to that album I found myself
waxing nostalgic for those days when rock 'n' roll was fast and fun (as
opposed to sappy and over produced).

a memoriam piece on Jeffrey Lee Pierce by LJ Cunningham

I apologize for living in a cave, and I hestitate to ask what seems
obvious- but I had no idea JLP had died (Wasn't he credited on a recent
Nick Cave cd?). The Gun Club was another great, original band that seems
to have been swallowed by oblivion (I've never been able to find Miami
on cd). I always thought that they'd sort of invented their own
sub-genre - something along the line of eerie voodoobluespunk: Robert
Johnson, CCR's Green River lp, and Stooges elements welded together
might come close to describing them(Esp. with their spin on Run Through
the Jungle - or hell, all of Miami & Fire of Love). In concert you
always sort of expected them to start passing snakes around or
something. At any length, I'm very sorry to hear this additional bad
news.

I believe Full Force and Ultimate Sonics, both on the Etiquette label,
are domestic. I have Full Force, and it's quite good. It's a
compilation package rather that an lp reissue, though. I assume US is as
well - it contains most of the songs that are on FF, +many others. I
assume it'l touch you for at least $25. Etiquette has a website, I
believe.

After something like 7 months, the new version of The Teen Scene
is finally ready, at least in e-mail form. (The print version may not
appear till next week. When that time comes, I'll let you all know what
the price will be.)

If you've seen it before, you know the Teen Scene is dedicated to
garage/punk, power pop, surf, mod, etc., mainly of the Today's Scene
variety, but that's slowly changing, as well.

#55 includes interviews by Bob Kondrak with The Drags,
Teengenerate, and Alex Cuervo (bassist for Blacktop and now the King
Sound Quartet), plus articles on the Greek Scene (courtesy of bomp-lister
Cristopher Kakkos), The Outsiders (see, some original garage material!)
courtesy of the maintainer of the Outsiders' Touch homepage, Filippo
Dulio, Radio Birdman's performance at the Big Day Out in Perth by Michael
Seman, a memoriam piece on Jeffrey Lee Pierce by LJ Cunningham, Bill
Luther introducing us to the Omega Men, plus me on all sorts of stuff
from Ray Davies to the Nomads, Aqua Velvets (*not* the SF surf group),
what the Devil Dogs are up to now, plus lotsa record reviews (including a
long one on the Untamed Youth Untamed Melodies CD.)

Yeah. I considered the potential faux pas-by-omission right after I
popped that off. Anybody who thinks Iggy was the Stooges only need
listen to some of those godawful solo boots from the mid 70's (I'm
thinking of the one I have: Suck On This. Suck it does, too - a very
lackluster crooning of Stooges numbers accompanied by a backing band
that cannot be described as tight) - or even a couple recent efforts,
for that matter. The big, obligatory disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I'm
no infidel; Iggy Pop will always be one of the Names of Power - but none
of the solo stuff, fine as much of it is, ever came close to that force
of nature quality that the Stooges had.

I hear ya, looking back when there was a true, vibrant and FUN scene hear
in Boston I feel bad for the kids of the MTV generation getting into the
homogeneous alterna-rock of Letters to Cleo. Everything is way too trendy
and controlled, security staff mingling with crowds to assure a stable rock
n' roll environment. All the great venues (even the Rat) have spruced up
their decor to attract the college crowd. TT's has even installed these
goofy "gothic" gargoyles around their bar. Blachhh. Of course while I was
digging The Proletariat and Mission of Burma I'm sure folks felt I really
missed out on Hendrix. Waaaaaaaah....Kevin

I haven't been to a game, but I've seen parts of a couple of them on
ESPN. They're billing the league as international quality soccer, but from what
I've seen, the names are about the best thing about these teams.

Subject: re- sonics - beware!

i'm really surprised no one has mentioned this, since there are people on this
list much more knowledgeable about the sonics than me:

beware! i have the Here Are the Ultimate Sonics comp (etiquette #024027) -
it's the 2 disc set. i have seen more recent comps of them, so it may be out
of print, but there is one thing any sonics fan/worshipper should know about
this comp before shelling out twenty-something bucks for it.

the version of "psycho" is missing the part of the vocal track where he
screams "psycho!" right before the hook each time. the first time i heard
this i thought i was hallucinating - but i checked w/ 2 other friends who have
the same reissue and hadn't listened to it all the way thru - they were more
pissed than i was. it renders this version of "psycho" virtually
unlistenable, it ruins it for me. other than that, the comp is great.

to clarify since i'm a confusing idiot:

baby, you're driving me crazy
i'm going out of my head
now i wish i was dead
you turn me on, then you cut me down
tell me baby, am i just your clown
[PSYCHO!] -----------this is the part that's missing after each verse

the GOOD news is that if you pick up the sonics' "Maintaining my cool" disc on
jerden, you DO get the original version. does anyone know why the version w/
the altered vocal track even exists? it's definitely not a different version
of the song - everything is totally the same on both versions, only the one on
the etiquette reissue is missing the most critical screams in the song!

Yep, in the late 70's my accomplices and I loafed around in basements,
woods, garishly dented cars, whinging about that ourselves - to a
backbeat of exploding seeds. But a couple of years later we were amazed
at the explosion of creativity that was going on - and all the amazing
stuff we never heard from the 60's and early 70's that was being
unearthed and cited by the new bands. W.DC's Home Grown radio, WHFS
(R.I.P.), gave the new scene heavy support and coverage (today, of
course, the station is a corporate property and a font of drivel).
Here's hoping it'll happen again for the next generation of bored
delinquents.
