Without going too far into such a question, I'd say you are way off base.
Billy & Miriam are two of the nicest people out there, and it would be
totally out of character for them to even suggest such things. Don't even
think about it, its not even close to the truth.

The Sex Pistols generally had more trouble fighting Teddy Boys than anyone
else. From what I can tell, there was a fair bit of Ted/NF crossover at that
time. Also, there did tend to be a polarization of the various youth movements
that split along pro-punk/anti-punk lines. A large number of West Indians
ended up with the punks, which put almost everyone with racist tendancies (nazi
skins, Teds, police, etc.) against them. There was some good size incident,
the details of which elude me, when a group of Teds put up fliers advertising a
giant fight against the punks. The police showed up and joined in against the
punks and dreads.

Of course, this story might be purely fictional and I might be off base.

As far as wearing Nazi regalia goes, I have read lots of interviews with
assorted British and American punks saying that they just thought the stuff
looked cool. It wasn't a particular statement, nor was it regional. Siouxsie
Sioux wore lots of Nazi stuff, as did the Ramones, The Stooges, The Electric
Eels. And there's the bizarre Nazi/dominatrix costumes than McLaren and
Westwood designed for Ken Russel's _Mahler_ Overall, I got the impression
that the punk fascination with Nazis was more stylistic than ideological.

I'm not even sure how this stupid thread started, but...while it be
true that Ron and perhaps other members of the Stooges collected Nazi
paraphenelia. In the book "Please Kill me," Ron has says that, yes, he
was interested in Nazi material, reading about them, etc. Not that he
condones them, on the contraray, he found it educating to read. As to
the rest of the Stoooges, I don't know. Iggy is/was Jewish, so I don't
know if that sheds any light on it. Asheton does not live in his
parents basement, I don't know where that guy got that from.

=

Possibly. Both Rotten and Cook wewe badly beaten by "teddy boys" at one
point, and the band did have it's share of proboems with skinheads.

Never seen it, but there is a new Punk book out -haven't got it yet.

Actually, I can name a whole bunch more black artists Kicks and Norton
has supported: Rudy Grayzell (who the A-Bones have backed up), Andre
Williams, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Link Wray (okay, he's not black, but
he is a Native American son), Rosco Gordon, etc. This list, I'm sure,
could go on.

Can anyone tell me what's available on video-legit or no- by The Damned or
the Cramps? I know there are videos and performances here and there(like
URGH!)-but I'd love to know what's out there...
Thanks!

I wouldn't know where to find it, but I've always enjoyed The
Cramps at the NAPA State Mental Institution video.

Having been there, in close association with many of these bands, I can
confirm that you are right about this.

The idea was to a. look cool and b. piss "establishment" types off,
including (especially) the hippies and the rock music establishment.

I can verify also that not much thought went into it. Most of the
fighting was in self defense against just these establishment blokes
who in fact DID get pissed off. Exercising ones' right of self
expression was not always without cost.

BTW Ron Asheton started collecting Nazi stuff as a kid, while Scotty
collected Japanese war mementos. This was started with the help of
their Dad who was a WWII hero and brought home all sorts of stuff. Ron
had to sell off almost all of his collection in the aftermath of the
Stooges demise. He still might have a few odds and ends lying around.
While ron does complain about the excesses and duplicity of government
and big business from time to time, I can tell you that he is no Nazi
and isn't a "militia freak", either. If he were, it is unlikely that
our friendship would have ever started, let alone continue for more
than 20 years.

OK next topic.
