There's one Cramps video that was filmed live in a mental institution that's
pretty strange. Its great musically and the inmates are really into it. I
think this one is still around somewhere. I've seen it for rent a few places
in San Francisco.

Can anyone tell me what's available on video-legit or no- by The Damned or
the Cramps? I know there are videos and performances here and there(like
URGH!)-but I'd love to know what's out there...
Thanks!

at the mental institution is weird and strange, and interesting. It
came ou on target Video, who have put out a lot of great stuff. Now,
sometime ago I heard that Target Video's archives were destroyed in the
SF earthquake of a few years ago. Anyone know if this is true? At the
Tower here, they carry a lot of Target stuff in both the rental and
sale section. There is a great Target Video of the Damned in SF in '79.
I don't know any other Cramps vids, but there's a wild clip of them
doing "Primitive" circa '82 on Target Video Vol. 4 compilation. About
once a year, you might catch the incredible video they did for "TV Set"
on MTV. Apparently, they also made a fairly risque video for one of the
songs off of Flamejob, but MTV refused to show it. There's also a video
release of "Final Damnation," the 1989 (90?) reunion of the orginal
line-up around, but I have yet to see it for some reason (like it's
always out when I try to rent it). I think we may have some more
various clips here and there on video, as well.

A buddy of mine has pressed up some 7" singles and is looking to
distribute them nationally. Can anyone provide the name (and phone
number if possible) of reputable distributors that will take such product
on consignment? Thanks much!

Be seeing you,
Bill

BTW, the single is for the band Sister Ray (from Ohio). Send me an
e-mail if yer interested in the single. I'll be off-line for about a week so
give me a little time to get back to you!

It would help if you told us what kind of music it is. Most small
distributors tend to specialize. Ie , if it's punk, there's people like Anti
and Estrus, whereas if it's pop, maybe Parasol or Get Hip would be more
appropriate. Anyway there are a bunch of small distributors/mailorder
outlets, which is about what it comes down to with a one-off single. Bigger
distributors tend to prefer dealing with established labels.

Shortly after I moved to the San Francisco bay area in 78, the Clash came to town
and hung around, playing locally produced shows outside the Bill Graham realm.
They were involved with a group called Rock Against Racism and the catalyst for
a strong chapter here, which produced shows at the Temple Beautiful.
The Clash people seemed to have passed beyond the "we're in a band!" phase and
were struggling to make more of their position; RAR sprouted from bands (Clash),
scene people, fans and politicos in an attempt at directing the growing scene,
instilling some values before it became a disaster (and worse - no fun).
Some were aware that the increasing press would draw in the wrong element
(suburban at best), and it was hoped that RAR shows could attract many newbies,
who could then be "indoctrinated" in a proper atmosphere of tolerance.

San Francisco had strong links with the English scene (its punk mirrored UK punk),
so its not surprising that RAR did some good stuff here. These shows mixed punk,
new wave, reggae, R&B & art-school bands (always big) and drew about a diverse
a crowd as I've seen. ** I should note Temple Beautiful {aka 1839 Geary} already
was the site of band produced shows, so RAR didn't arrise out of a vacuum.
Politically though, RAR was about as ineffective as you might expect.

By the time Special A.K.A arrived in SF (early 80), Jerry Dammers said the
the UK club scene was uncontrollable. This violence eventually killed off the
scene. "Ghostown" is their choronicle of the end. I quit going to most shows
here after Hardcore element started to spill into every show...

I think the fascist element in UK mirrors the surburban Hardcore movement -
both composed of followers who destroy any scene they try to participate in.
These hardcore guys reminded me of the jocks who used to beat the shit out
of hippies in the 60's and punks in the 70's.

laura, thee cramps video on target, circa 1980?, is a kick and was filmed in
a mental hospital in california!!? it is old; bryan gregory was still in the
combo...the film rocks and is actually pretty dramatic cause the "stage" is
crawlin with audience/band members...i have a late period god-damned vid that
was released toward the end of the damned that is of their final tour. it is
hot and has the captain, brian james , b.merrick and roman jugg jugglin the
stage. i saw em twice during this period and i think the video is a fair
treatment, cheers, toddd

Hey Folks,

Just joined the list and noticed that someone had mentioned
Kicks magazine. Does anyone know where to get back issues?

I'd like to collect 'em all and have them bound in
Library of Congress quality leather binders so's that
my great grandchildren can have the opportunity to
learn of "The Hunch" well into the 21st century.
