About 10days ago Mark mentioned about the reissue of Tempos.
Vol.6 of Kicks Magazine had a article of Tempos.
It issued in'88 and still available.

Contact Norton Records at nortonrec@aol.com for info. However, I
can almost guarantee you that the first few issues are long out of
print. But I suppose it can't hurt to ask.

Hey everyone. Sorry if this is getting cross-posted to all your haunts,
but it's the PR thing, you know...

The new issue of Cosmik Debris is online at
http://www.greatgig.com/cosmidebris, and it has interviews with Mark
Naftalin (Butterfield Blues Band alum who's played with most of the
greats of blues), Robert Rich (electro-acoustic ambient music guy and
popularizer of the sleep concert concept), and Joe Bermudez of Mobile
Fidelity Sound Labs (who talks about nearly every stage of making a 24k CD).
Also an article on the Cowbunga surf box, and the usual slate of columns,
politics, and basic stuff, including 49 record reviews covering a ton of
genres.

AND we're giving away two items. First, a limited edition (only 2000
pressed) marbled-pink vinyl LP of the Henry Mancini tribute, Shots In The
Dark. It's a killer mixture of surfy exotica from Del-Fi. Second, a
fantastic dub CD by Mad Professor. The Evolution Of Dub is the third CD
in the Prof's Black Liberation Dub series, and it's quite the mind trip.

There are table-of-contents listings for each drawing. Just fill out the
form and hit submit. Drawings will be held on July 31st. If you can't
get on the WWW, just send me e-mail saying which drawing you want to
be in. That's about it. Enjoy.

Hitomi(from Tokyo)

Thanks for the scoop on the Tempos article in Kicks #6. I was able to
pick up a copy of the disc this weekend. Crude. Inept. Great.

Did Tim Warren release a Tempos compilation on the Crypt label about
ten years ago? It's a bit foggy, but my chemically enhanced powers of
recall have reminded me of a possible release.

Does anyone else have any of the Justice releases on the Collectables?
I am interested in knowing the recording techniques used on the Tempos
reissue is apparent on the other Justice compilations. It appears that the
motto at Justice was: "When in doubt, max the reverb and echo".

And a final inquiry, is AIP gonna issue some more Pebbles disks this
year?

I don't know if anyone addressed this in the last week, so I will...

I have seen Miriam's mid-70s Flaming Groovies fanzine where there is a
photo fo her and a teenage friend next to a KKK headquarters bulding in
her hometown (someplace on Ohio) the banner in the background says
"God, Country, Race" etc. They are, as described, giving the stiff-armed
salute.

Miriam is also one of the nicest people I ever met.

But she's got some answering to do and I've overheard her do some of
that answering to puzzled fans. The story is that she and her friend
were goofing around in their hometown as mid-70s teens in smallish
towns do and they stood in front of this ridiculous racist organization and
gave the Nazi salute, essentially being Beavis-y smart aleck kids. So,
this is a photo of them ironically mocking the seriousness of adults in that
neighborhood with their own teenage devil-may-care-ness... However,
what those Ohio kids didn't realize is that all across the country are
communities far more left wing than Ohio, who would never have
allowed such a building to go up (at least not without lots of protests).
So you show this picture to anyone from the coasts and they're like
totally shocked the kids aren't throwing rocks at the windows. The
fucked up thing as I understand this is that building was part of Miriam's
everyday life, like some Union Hall, Elk's Club, or any other building in her
town. How would that twist your worldview?

Similarly Kicks has this total hard-assed anti-sissy, rockabilly attitude
which absolutely does not reflect Billy & Miriam's personal behavior. I
mean they go on about Sting's over-intellectual fey British behavior like
they're condemning all kinds of people, which isn't what they're doing at
all. I mean, I have seen stuff they did in print about how they don't like
British artists, music after 1963, etc. Yet that's not really the case.
Where would Kicks/ Norton be without Black Gay men like Esquerita?
Not only did they record and tour with a black singer (the Great Gaylord),
but they often talk about transvestite and gay friends and neighbors in
Brooklyn. They have too many Jewish friends to count and have
warned me about certain record collectors and fanzines which they said
are edited by racists, etc. (oddly Black to Comm is not one of them, but
I've only seen Chris write 2 or 3 racist sentences in issues).

So, to responsibly answer the question- Miriam did pose for that
photo, but she was a teenager who due to her midwestern upbringing
probably didn't know how the outside world would view the photo.

However, the story about Ron Asheton on the day of (Fred Smith's??)
funeral showing off to two enamored scenester girls his large collection
of Nazi flags, uniforms, books seems to be well confirmed... And didn't
one of Bomp's Iggy releases discuss the Stooges antics as being Danny
Sugarman fueled push-Iggy-over-the-edge for fun-isms? I think it's fair
to say what happened with the Stooges in the mid-1970s practically
happened *to* Iggy.

Two more volumes are in the works for Christmas; three if you count "Ear
Piercing Punk", which will be reissued on CD with 13 previously unreissued
bonux trax.

Due to a seriously egregious albeit ACCIDENTAL omission...a groovy band many
of you already know about, The LEARS, was left off the YOUNG SAVAGE FLORIDA
announcement to the list...Dreadfully sorry to the LEARS and its
international contingent of fans. I am *reposting* this, because there has
been so much interest. And, if you live in Florida, CD release party info is
at the end!
Cheers,
Laura from the Baskervils

The Tampa, Florida new wave rock band The Baskervils has organized a
compilation called "Young Savage Florida" that will feature Florida resident
and original drummer for Badfinger, Mike Gibbins! These are the first solo
ever from this rock n' roll legend! His tracks are called "Dream Harder
(Ballad of the Redcoats)" and "Layaway." Both tracks feature Mike on lead
vocals, the first of which over heavy Steve Jones-ish guitar strummed by
Screamin' Iguanas of Love/Nicoteens guitar player Greg Reinel. "Layaway" is
a lovely Badfinger styled mid-tempo rocker with very pretty George
Harrison-ish guitar leads. He recorded the tracks in a home studio as demos
for an upcoming full length release.
The compilation will also contain two songs each from the following Florida
based artists: The Lears, Baskervils, Car Bomb Driver, Edison Shine, Leonard
Croon Band, Loco Siempre, Vodkats, Hate Bombs, Escargot, Surf Kings, and The
Rancid Polecats, and pianist John Stephan. Quantities will be extremely
limited- 1000 to 2000 copies worldwide! Release date is set for July 19th...

Is this the same compilation that came out some 10 to 15 years ago? The
cover had some circa '77 punkette on the cover, mohawk and all?!?!

That LP was a treasured artifact that has since been lost over the years.
I look forward to the reissue.
