Hell, I grew up in the same neighborhood with Alpo. Suburban Boston,
Beverly to be exact. He was voted "Best Dressed" in junior high
school...it musta been the Brian Jones hair-do. The sonofabitch kept
buggin' me about the clarinet (I played one at the time) and about reading
music. He sat across from me in home room and would gobble up
bennies, this was in eight grade.

Yeah.... Real Kids, DMZ and the Modern Lovers....great music during a
very drepressing time for music in Boston.

Sorry to hear about Alan's accident in '92....

I assume you're kidding about the Boys Town scene since those movies were
made in the early `40s. You can find out just about anything about any movie
just by checking the internet movie archive at http://us.imdb.com/blurb.html.

Speaking of the Real Kids, we're trying to do a Real Kids article for
our next issue. I've tried to call Joh Felice on a number that Aram
Heller had for him, but both times I called, it had been disconnected.
Does anyone have his number? I tried Miriam, too, but she had the same
number. I kmnow he's been working on a new record w/ Steve Wynn, but
that's about it.

Howz about us Bompers starting a letter-writing campaign to Sundazed and/or Rhino (mail@sundazed.com or DrRhino@email.rhinorecords.com) requesting a reissue of the soundtrack to the 1968 soft-core masterpiece,
_Barbarella_? Love that Bob Crewe orchestration!!

Didn't Iggy play David Bowie in "Man Who Fell To Earth"? Or was it the
other way around. Maybe it was Antonio Vargas.

As long as they include that Glitterhouse song. Heck, why not use the
Glitterhouse album to fill out the disc?

Seems to me that there was a *lot* of great Boston Music around at
the time: Real Kids, La Peste, Atlantics (my personal favs), Modern
Lovers, New Models, Nervous Eaters, The Neighborhoods, Third Rail ...
all ear candy to be had at either The Rat (bow your head on hallowed ground),
or at The Channel.

Where have all the good times gone? At least there's old Adrian Lloyd
albums to try to search out.

 It's a great one, for sure! The Groovies' "Teenage Head" album gives it stiff
competition in my house though...

 I was *really* happy when Norton reissued it on CD. I wish they hadn't
mastered the CD from an LP, although the LP they used was cleaner than my old
Red Star copy.

 I have an LP at home that's an alternate version of that 1st album. Same songs
but different performances. It came out on the Fan Club label around 10 years
ago. Anyone know where that stuff came from ?

>if anyone ever saw these guys live or has any good stories or current info,
>i'd love to hear about it.

 I saw them 3 times in the late 70s. The 1st time was in a tiny bar in
Worcester, MA (aka Wormtown) called Circes. The opening band (possibly Blue
Moon) had Preston Wayne in it, I think. The Real Kids had the lineup from the
1st LP, and they were fabulous.

 Next I saw them at Cantones in Boston, opening up for the Troggs. There were 2
sets, with seperate admission. The Troggs didn't show up for the 2nd set, and a
brawl broke out. My most vivid memory of the Troggs from that night was how out
of breath Reg Presley looked. Maybe he was too tired to do the 2nd set... The
Real Kids were great again.

 The last time I saw them was on a boat cruising around Boston harbor. Billy
Borgioli was gone by this time, and I didn't enjoy them as much. In the middle
of their 2nd set John Felice walked off. Alpo said "Felice is in a mood" and
that was the end of it.

 I hope the new Felice recordings come out soon. I enjoyed his contribution to
the Sam The Sham tribute CD. I'm also encouraged by the Real Kids reunions,
especially after hearing the song "I'll Never Sing That Song Again" on the
Lowdowns album. That song was pretty depressing.

I'll suggest it next time I talk to the reissue guys at Rhino. I do know they
are working on the Blow-Up soundtrack, and they have some unreleased cuts.
They called me looking for info on that, seems there are a couple tracks that
have the Lovin' Spoonful's music but someone else (other than John Sebastian)
singing. I wasn't able to help, but just out of curiousity, does anyone here
know what the deal was with that?

>How does anyone else feel about these LP's?

The Diggin' For Gold series appears to cover everything from rabid r'n'b to
pop. =20
I like the generic gold and black sleeves and the titbits of information on
each of=20
the bands. However it is a shame that more care was not have been taken=
 with=20
the tape transfers. That said there is some bloody rare (and good) stuff=
 here=20
and to my knowledge most tracks have not appeared before. Buy volumes 1 &=
=20
2 and you get the four tracks from Thor's Hammer (Iceland) ep and for a
fraction=20
of the current market price. There is a copy the ep gracing one of the=20
collectors shops in London at the moment - it's priced at a cool =A3250!
Forget the=20
ridiculous price and the silly collectors who splash out such large sums=
 and=20
enjoy their incredibly tough sound for a fraction. You will find plenty of=
=20
interest on this series and probably one or two numbers which do not set the=
=20
pulse running. Personal faves include 'I Fell In Love For The Very First=
 Time'=20
by The Undertakers on Volume 2 (great garage sound with blasting horn=20
arrangement) and 'Sad Sack' by the Dyaks (Belgium) on Vol. 3. I have not=
 heard=20
Volume 5 which concentrates on Aussie bands but it probable stacks up well=
=20
against 1-4.

For those of you who prefer in-yer-face-beatin'n'poundin-beat music then=
 look=20
out for 'At The Club - 16 Killer Beat-Punkers From Europe 65-66' (MONSTER=20
RECORDS MR 196566). There is absolutely no wimp material on this=
 collection. =20
Once again care has been taken with the packaging and the dust jacket=
 contains=20
lots of information and pictures of the bands. Mastering is also much=
 better =20
than the DFG series. Some of the combos participating include Les=
 Sauterelles=20
(Switerland) , Bootjacks (Sweden), Los Shakers (Spain) and one or two other=
=20
names familiar to followers of 'Pebbles - The Continent Strikes Back '. If
you=20
love the tougher and less polished side of sixties beat I recommend you buy=
=20
this one before investigating the Diggin' For Gold comps.

"I know there's gold here, where are you gold, where are you gold, and I'm=
