They reformed for a one-off gig for the Joe Meek Appreciation Society a
couple of years ago. Unfortunately I had the misfortune to attend. The
band that evening consisted of many of the original musicians (there were
several line-ups) plus a *youngster* on synth. The Squad proceeded to
demolish oldies like 'Knock On Wood' and some of their singles. After seeing
many, many bands on the trash/garage scene it sounded like sludgy bar room
rock. Still most of the Meek Freaks enjoyed the set and John Repsch (author
of 'The Legendary JM') was wearing a big smile.
You know these reunion gigs can be dangerous. Sometimes it can be extremely
good (John's Children, The Creation, The Wheels) and at other times very
embarassing (Bo Street Runners, Riot Squad). Always approach with an open
mind and a realistic attitude.

Hitomi - Is there any chance of posting the URL for the Monks Homepage. I
found the Repetoire Reissue of 'Black Monk Time' last week and would love to
know more about these eccentric G.I.'s. The LP is unique and impossible to
pidgeonhole. Is it garage, punk, art-rock, a hoax ...non of these, it's
simply *Monk Time*.

Hey Steve,
How about telling us about the reunion gigs of John's Children & The
Creation? I have been a fan of both bands for many years and would love to
hear about those shows!! Thanks!

Sounds like you have 'Speed Connection' from '85. Both songs are originals.
'Haunted House' is a demo and was sneaked onto the album as a fake (a la
Kingsman) "live" cut. You will find the original version on 'The Angry
Years 84-86' on Impossible Records (Spain). Do not worry if you cannot find
it because Triple XXX are due to bring out the album in the US. 'BYOB'
originaly appeared on 'Blast Off!' which was recorded for Red Star in '78
but not released until '82 by ROIR. You can find it on CD pretty easily
these days.

There are a couple of stories behind 'Speed Connection'. In Europe the
album was recorded and released within *1 Week*. I kid you not! When IRS
in the US heard the recording they said "No way can this be released in the
USA ... it is far too raw". The American version then is a completely
different gig (the 'Tones had a weeks residence at The Gibus in Paris) and
each album has a different running order and set list. For instance 'Speed
Connection II' (US) has neat version of 'When The Night Falls' (a song by
the UK Mod band th Eyes). Zaremba introduces the song by saying " ...Peter
Buck ...The Fleshtones and REM combine". A total fabrication. A rather
drunk Marek Pakulski (bass player until '86) confided to the Canadian 'zine
'What Wave' that "Peter Buck plays on Shit!". Furthermore when I once asked
Zaremba about sales for "Connection" he replied that the album was mainly
used as pier filler. All of which is neither here nor there. In short if
your cassette has pastel potraits of the band then you have the US version
while the European version has a jiving saxophonist.

Now if you think that record is wild you want to hear some of there bootleg
shows or even catch the band live. Several readers of Bomp can offer
testimonies. How I wish someone would release the 'Fleshtones Radio Party'.
This was recorded in a NYC studio and broadcast "live" on French radio.
They did it in '80 and the show is about 30 minutes long. It contains lots
of their early classics ('American Beat', 'F-F-Fascination', 'Girl From
Baltimore' etc) , the playing is tight, energetic and you can visualise the
smiles. Great lines from Mr Z like "Those satellites keep turning round and
round" or the Sgt Bilko inspired "Hey, what keys it in Strengo ...G ...ah
the key of G".

Can anyone here recommend the new 3 Cd box set on Sundazed of The Beau
Brummels? I only have the first 2 Lp's by them(which I love-on CD-Sundazed)
Is the box set a must, or is it just a lot of filler? I was told by two
different people that the first 2 Lp's are all I need. Is this true?
