Ah yes... the Speed Connections... I remember buying #1 at the Record
Archive in Rochester, NY, just off the U of Roch. campus (where I was
then dutifully studying for a math degree). This record hit the Archive
only about a month or so after the band had played on campus (Feb 16th,
'85 saw the U of R concert committee put on its first concert... a then
relatively obscure group called 10000 Maniacs opening for The Fleshtones
& The Violent Femmes.) I bought SC #1 and went wild.

Some time later I saw #2... which bought, then found out that it paled in
comparison.

The url for the Monks homepage is:
http://www.ils.nwu.edu/~silverst/monks.html

It's not much, only one page right now, the guy is still working on it,
but at least there's a Monks page out there! I've been fascinated with
the Monks ever since I heard "Complication" on Turds On The Bum Ride,
finally tracked down the German reissue of Black Monk Time, and have
played it a lot in the last couple of months!

The Creation (Kenny Picket, Eddie Phillips, Jack Jones, Bob Garner)
have a new Cd out called Power Surge, and it's simply amazing. Heavier
even than their '60s stuff, and somewhat "contemporary" sounding (in a
good way), but it satill sounds like them. The guitar playing is great,
lotsa reverb, distortion and FUZZ!!! It puts a lot of
neo-Mod/garage/psych bands of today to shame. It's on the Creation
label.

I have a Fleshtones boot LP called New Scene. The sound is quite good,
but the pressing is somewhat quiet (the Lp runs about an hour), and I
think it was recorded circa 1982 in NYC. I wish someone would reissue
some of these Fleshtones boots on CD. I'll never foirget the first time
I saw them, in Toronto, Ontario circa 1984 w/ Echo & the Bunnymen (!)
and Billy Bragg (!!). It was a great show, the Fleshtones rocked and
even though I was familiar with their music, I wasn't prepared with
their stage show. They were so cool, and did lots of obscure covers
that I didn't think anyone knew about. Actually, so did Echo, who
invited some of the 'Tones and Mr. Bragg on stage for their encore, a
crazed medley of '60s punk songs like "Action Woman," "7 & 7 Is" and a
few I've forgotten. It was intense!!

I have 3,4,5,6,of Prae Kraut Pandaemonium. I didn't buy 7,that is something mond

and strange for me.
3&4 are good. 4 is moody with little psychedelic taste.
5&6 are so so.But ofcause the all tune of Monks are killer!

Today I accessed the Hope Page of Monks. This is great with audio and video!

Why isn't the official video of Beat club(german '60s TV program) release?
In Japan, some years ago,the LD and video from Beat club was released.
But I t doesn't includeany german gruop, it contained only british famouse band.
I want to watch monks, boots, etc in good condition.

I recently got a tape of a band called Powder from a friend. It's got some
pretty cool sounds on it and I think they were around in the late 60's.
Can anyone provide some background info on this group and a
discography? Much appreciated.

Also, does anyone know if there are any compilations available of songs
on which Ron Dante sings? I know he was the voices of The Archies
(Sugar, Sugar) and The Cuff Links (Tracy), but what else did he do?
Was he Edison Lighthouse?

Be seeing you,
Bill

my fleshtones story:

saw em here in austin about 3 years ago. they came through the crowd playing
bongos, got onstage, tore through 2 quick ones. on the 3rd song, zaremba
dives out into audience, dances for awhile, climbs back onstage and has a huge
gash in his forehead.

did that stop him? ha! he was up there belting it out while bleeding
profusely down the middle of his face and all over his shirt, k streng doing
karate kicks the whole time. finally someone handed up a bandana which helped
stop the bleeding, so he sang the rest of the night wearing a bandana w/ dried
blood all over his face. (for the rest of the set the other guys in the band
gave him a hard time about the bandana, saying he looked like willie nelson)

my friend casino el camino, who used to live in nyc and saw and played w/ them
a bunch of times, said this was far and away the greatest set he ever saw them
do.

i can't believe all the idiots who bag on their new stuff. it may be a little
more produced but i think their new songs are as good as ever.

If I recall....Powder was formed by the Frost brothers from the ashes of
a San Franciscan group the Art Collection. They recorded a number of
demos and were the backup band for Sonny and Cher circa 1968. The
whole scoop is one of the "Cream Puff Wars" issues.

I'll see if I can dig up the issues and get the discography out

Didn't Ron Dante record as Reunion, who had a in 1974.....sumpin' like
"Life is a Rock(and the Radio Rolled Me)".

The Monks Homepage is
  http//www.boston.com/thefix/sound/interview/monks/smonhom.html
This has video and audio (It need a lot of PCmemory and time for downloading) deta.
I think Monks made a great influence to '70s german rock like Neu.

Do you know "Hide'N seek again"?
This is look like Diggin for gold series. But released from another label.
I don't know the relation of each other.
It is fantastic comp of international garage! It includes Monks Chant
(this is live and this song was not recorded at the studio!).
And another songs in it are killer too.I love the flip side of 1st Barbarians single
"You've got to Understand" .

                                                                         Hitomi

Hitomi - Is there any chance of posting the URL for the Monks Homepage. I
found the Repetoire Reissue of 'Black Monk Time' last week and would love to
know more about these eccentric G.I.'s. The LP is unique and impossible to
pidgeonhole. Is it garage, punk, art-rock, a hoax ...non of these, it's
simply *Monk Time*.

Y'know... he did that up in Rochester once, too, but it was his arm, I
believe... a *huge* gash. I think King Farouk or someone in the
Chesterfield Kings camp gave Mr. Z. a sweatshirt to staunch the blood.

Casino!!! What's he up to, musically? I was a major fan of his
old group, The Splat Cats. In fact, my 'zine, The Teen Scene, is named
for a song from their debut 7" EP.
