This might be slightly off topic, but Alec Palao was in the band "The Sting-Rays" some time
ago... and seeing his name mentioned made me wonder if anyone had any information about what
happened to the band after they split up. I heard someone mention a group calle
d "The Charity
Case" once but that was all I ever heard. Can anyone be kind enough to oblige with information
?

Cheers,

Damon

Someone (Derek Grime?) asked about resources to use when looking for
surf & garage music. For more recent garage stuff, I'd suggest trying to
pick up a copy of "The Great Rock & Roll Survey - 1980's" (or something
like that) by the Rev. Joe Longone. I'm sure Blair or somebody else can
help you out with how to find a copy. It's a pretty cool summary of some
great 1980's bands that ruled the garage scene in NYC and elsewhere
(Lyres, Fleshtones, Cramps, Vipers, Fuzztones, Gun Club, etc.)

Also, to Steve Coleman, are you (or anyone else) familiar with a live
Fleshtones' record called "Soul Madrid"? What do you think of it? I
picked it up a few years ago on Imposible Records and I think it's a
Spanish import. Not sure how easy it is to find, but I recommend this as
a fine document of their great live show.

Be seeing you,
Bill

Bill Jones referred to The Great Rock'n'Roll Survey - 1980s by Reverend
Joe Longone (some will remember Joe from his time publishing Fuzbrains
fanzine.)

This book came out in mid-91, I believe and was Joe's attempt to tell the
world that the 80s was a damned good time if you knew where to look. He
took a survey approach, sending questionnaires out to folks far and wide
asking for Top Songs, Top LPs, Top Bands. Then he tabulated the results
and wrote reviews/essays on each. Also included are two other (larger)
essays... one by WFMU DJ Bill Kelly and the other by Captain PJ (the
PuppetMan) in Massachusetts. (Anyone around during the mid-80s scene in
the Northeast will probably recall a sweaty PJ waving puppets all over
the place. "Go Mental!" was his cry.)

Anyway... Joe's book was quite enjoyable and points out some really cool
records. The weakness is that he didn't get as many responses from
people far away as he did from those nearby (whose arms he could twist
personally.) This means that the results are skewed to the Northeast, in
general, and Boston/Worcester, in particular.

If anyone is interested in finding a copy, I'll try and dig up Joe's old
PO Box and you can write, hoping it's still in use... OR, Joe's probably
still doing community radio in Worcester, MA. You might try calling him
there (it might be WCUW, I'm not 100% certain.) Tell him I said hi.

Who knows... maybe the station is onthe WWW... maybe Joe's on-line.
Hmm... Aram Heller might know...
