Steve, thanks for your feedback on "Soul Madrid." While it's not the best
live record I've heard, I think it's a nice package and has some good
tunes on it. I didn't notice Peter's voice being that bad, but now that you
mention it... I enjoy it cause it's got some staples of the band's live act
("Got A Line On You", "Moondawg", "Get Down With It", etc.) I'll try to
track down the '82 show, which sounds pretty cool. Do you know what
radio station it aired on and the date? Would like to be sure I get the right
one if I come across it somewhere!

Say, do you remember when the Fleshtones were at Mardi Gras on MTV
hanging out with the Bangles and the Hoodoo Gurus? (Those were the
days...) That was pretty damn cool, seein' them all jamming to "Get
Down With It." I think I have that videotape around here somewhere...

Also, thanks to Paul for bringing back memories of the Mad Violets. So,
what's Dino Sorbello up to these days?

Be seeing you,
Bill

Well, I took a look at the WCUW web page, thanks to some of the Worcester
crowd posting the URL (http://www.splusnet.com/wcuw/). And from there I
started looking for radio programs that might belong to Reverend Joe
Longone and Captain PJ. Well, I found 'em! Joe does a show from 9-11 PM
on Saturday nights called the Rock'n'Roll Party and PJ does his on
Tuesday night/Wednesday morning from Midnight till 2 AM. Joe's is
described as being 50s / 60s, doo wop included, while PJ's is geared more
to garage & psych.

When in Worcester, check out 91.3 FM at these times.

I've also sent a msg to the station asking them to convey a msg to Joe
from me, to find out if his book is still available.

The Stingrays were a great band, and it was cool they way they mixed up
all their infuences. Seeing a crazed rockabilly style band, complete
with a stand-up bassist and drummer baging out really fast and chaotic
versions of "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Down On Me" and "Take It As It
Comes" was great! Alsi of note is Bals' side-project band Ug & the
Cavemen, who out out one album, and also the Bananamen EP where the
Stingrays pretended to be some lost/mystery band playing three songs
the Cramps did. That's a real rarity, if you ever see it, scoop it up.

Dino's still living in the same apartment on East 6th St. in the
East Village, as far as I know. I haven't seen him for about a month or
so. Musically, he's still going with Laughing Sky. As per usual for
Dino, he's more psych than anything else. I think Matt Dietrich told me
he picked up their LP and liked it. I'm not as into them... too
psychedelic for my tastes. I always thought Dino's best stuff came with
the Mad Violets ("Psilocybe," for instance.) Of course, he also played
with the mid-80s NYC garage supergroup, The Lords of the New Surf.

I wasn't planning on posting about the print version of this issue,
mainly 'cuz I'd already mentioned it in reference to the e-mail version.
However, some people have written asking how much, so I figure I'll save
us all alot of trouble right now...

TS 55, at 54 pages, runs $3 + 2 stamps if you're in the US. (Outside the
US, contact me personally for prices and I'll figure it out based on
postage costs... which means a trip to the Post Office. YECH!)

Contained inside are interviews with Teengenerate, The Drags, &
Blacktop's Alex Cuervo. Also found are articles on the Outsiders, The
Greek Scene, Ray Davies live, and an article on Jeffrey Lee Pierce.

Is/was Dino the slick blond (a la Billy Zoom) or was he the slim
curly-haired paisley dude who played with them earlier on? Both
incarnations (ooh a little flower pun) were a lotta fun at shows in Boston.
Thanks, Kevin

I dig the Laughing Sky album also, although it is indeed heavily psych (but
then again, I like that sort of thing). Blacklight Chameleon fans take
note...

Anyone have any info. on Sam the Sham tribute cd? Is it easy to find? I
saw it on an lp in a used bin; band line up looked top-notch. Vinyl was
too scratched to buy for test-listen, though. No one in the shop had any
knowledge of the product.

Does anyone have more info on Ug & the Cavemen? This might be my favourite
record of all time... Did they do any other singles or was it just the one
Lp? This was SO ahead of it's time! From the cover art to the excerpts from
old movies inbetween songs... What a great disk. The Bananamen were pretty
hot as well.
