Sam The Sham Tribute "Turban Renewal" on Norton Records (94/95) is
absolutely one of the best tribute albums ever ! Great bands doing great
songs, many of which I hadn't heard ever before. The Brood's
heartbreaking version of "Love Me Like Before" alone makes it worth
buying. Go get it before somebody else does and be "in with the out

I'm doing separate link pages for each genre of music for Cosmik Debris
(a small scale version of what the MusicWeb project will hopefully be
someday), and I don't have much for garage music yet. If you have a site
that deals with garage, or if you know of some, please send the URL to me

I agree. I bought the CD from the Norton catalog. They're

I did't have any trouble finding the Turban Renewal CD, but that was over a
year ago in a store that's reasonably well stocked. The CD mentions that the
vinyl version contains a couple of extra cuts. One of the extra bands was the
Mummies. Don't remember the other one...

 It's definitely a keeper.

I liked the Swingin' Neckbreakers cut on Turban Renewal, and their Shake Break
album. Do they have another album out ? I though I saw a listing for another
one in an online catalog, but that listing's not there anymore.

By the way, if anyone has a copy of this for trade or sale, let me
know! I have it on tape, but I've never been able to find the actual
record. I think, and I could be wrong here, that one of thee
Headcoatees gals was in Ug and the Cavemen, also. I think she was the
drummer?

There were a lot of really cool, weird things that came out of that
whole British garage/psychobilly/trash scene in the '80s. The X-men,
who also may have a connection to Ug were pretty cool and the first
band I ever heard cover the insane Pebbles oddity "Leave My House" on
vinyl. I can think of many groups from that period I dug: the Vibes
(who mutated into the Purple Things), Tall Boys, Wigs, and many others
stretched the boundries of rockabilly, garage and psych music. Of
course, one of my all time faves was the Cannibals, and if anyone knows
what happened to them, let me know! A few years ago, I got in contact
with Mike Spencer, who even called me one night and the band and him
played a song over the phone! (they were at their rehearsal space), and
I talked to Mike's four-year-old daughter. Anyway, I sent them a bunch
og interview questions, and never heard from them again! Repeated
attempts to contact them yeilded no results, and subsequent letters
were returned, "addressee moved/no forwarding address."

JEMEEL MOONDOC/LAURENCE COOK/JOHN VOIGT

mummies have put out 3-4 full length records and quite a number of singles.
album artwork alone makes these classic (they mummify themselves for live
shows). their records are pretty obnoxious raucous lo-fi stuff, but pretty
good. lots of covers of 60s garage tunes - sonics, etc. i have "f**k cds
it's the mummies" and "mummies play their own records" - they are pretty cool.

the best thing by them in my opinion is their version of the beatles' "i'm
down" (beatles did write that didn't they?) on a 7" on sympathy for the record
industry. for some reason it says "immigrant song" on the back along w/ i'm
down, but i would say that's the one to get.

Someone asked if about the Swingin' Neckbreakers and what records were
available...

Well, I don't even want to *try* to list the singles (I don't have them
all, anyway), but there are a bunch, including stuff for Telstar (their
main label), Estrus, and a couple European labels. However, the LP/CD
category is fairly easy:

Live For Buzz - Telstar, 1993
Shake Break - Telstar, 1995

Their approach is raw garage rock, Sonics-style rock'n'roll.

They're from Trenton, NJ, so the majority of their shows are East Coast,
but they've toured Europe, plus done some touring towards the mid-West (I
know they did some dates with Southern Culture), and they've played the
Seattle-Bellingham-Vancouver axis.

They're also going out to Denver, CO next weekend for TrebleFest. Anyone
else here, besides me, heading out for that? It'd be fun to meet up.
(Oh yeah... I believe Neckbreakers fans will also want to see *Thee*
Lyres, also known as Man or Mono-Man.)

I thought this was one of the best tributes ever done. While I
don't think the Lyres did that great a version of Ring Dang Doo, there
are friends of mine who think it's the best track on there (and they
*love* the rest of it, too.) I do think The Devil Dogs did a great job
with their track. Actually, I can't pick a personal fave on this one,
though it's incredibly cool hearing Handsome Dick Manitoba go all out,
and John Felice does a great version of Little Red Riding Hood. But the
list goes on throughout... fantastic record, I thought.

Actually, I thought this one (Groin Thunder) was put out by Dog
Meat or Au Go Go. It is, however, a double LP, like the Sam the Sham
tribute. It also shares some of the same bands.

Gotta love The Muffs doing You Can Cry If You Want To. Tons more
coolness on this, but I still like the Sam the Sam tribute more.

who'll be appearing in the Kansas City area for the rest of the summer.
Incidentally, these guys are all booked into one of our larger outdoor

Styx and Kansas

Steely Dan

King Crimson (part of the HORDE Festival)

REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and Peter Frampton

Steve Miller Band and Pat Benatar

Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Beach Boys

Marshall Tucker Band, Edgar Winter, Leon Russell (appearing on a bill with
Hank Williams, Jr.)

Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Doobie Brothers

There are some points that could be made here but, um, where did the last
twenty years go? BTW, I enjoyed many of these bands during their heydays,
but I'm astonished that these are acts promoters are relying to sell
tickets in the mid-90s.

The forementioned, among other things contains a great cover of Run
Chicken Run (not quite so cool though as the one Iggy did in the live

It should be relatively easy to find. Try that e-mail address that was
quoted recently for Billy and Miriam at Norton Records or have a look at the
Midnight Records Web site. By the way the vinyl version has a couple of
extra tracks not featured on the CD. There are heaps of great

and was so tickled he just could not stop laughing. Says it all really.

As far as I know they only did the one LP. You know I think fans of the
Mummies should take a listen to Ug & the Cavemen. There is a striking
resemblence in both bands style and attitude. They gigged infrequently and
the only time I went to see them (with the same pal who has all the 'tones
videos) the show was cancelled. For those who want to try and locate this
record the details are:

Go Gorilla; Tarzan's Jungle Home; Nightmare; Be A Caveman; Under The Door;
I'm Evil, Rev Up; Switchblade; Shake It Injun; Bo Diddley; Mean Teen Mama

Media Burn MB16 (with a slime green OR pink neanderthal sleeve and spoof
band notes)

Good luck because it is long out of print and only occasionaly pops up in
the London records shops. WARNING : This record is not to be taken seriously.

Sorry I do not have the station details, all I know is that it was recorded
on 9/28/82 at the Victory Club in Philadelphia. Someone placed it tape for
me and it sounds like they had access to the FM broadcast. It runs for
about 60 sixty minutes and the band kick-off with a fantastic version of
'Girl You Captivate Me'. Oh yes the recording was also bootlegged in Europe
as 'New Scene' on the Pogophone label. Look out for a b/w picture of a
swaying skyscrapper.

Wow! A friend in France has some really cool 'tones videos. For instance
the band playing 'Leather Kings' on Warhol's cable TV show and the promo for
'Teenage Werewolf'. Despite having far too many records and CDs round this
place me and my girlfriend have never bothered to trade in our b/w TV set
and invest in a video recorder or colour one. Gotta V34 modem though <grin>.
