From BAM Magazine (8/9/96):

"Arthur Lee, leader of the legendary '60s psychedelic band Love, has
been sentenced to eight years in prison. Lee, who's suffered from
various mental problems sincce Love's heyday, has a rap sheet that
goes back to 1964.He was most recently busted for shooting at a
ceiling in retaliation for neighbors complaining about noise.
Apparently, Lee has been suffering from Parkinson's disease and was
not taking his medication. Lee is still popular overseas. He recently
completed a European tour, which included Oasis' Gallagher brothers
dropping in for some shows and stopping backstage for visits."

Very sad, huh. I saw Arthur and a version of Love about six years ago
at the I-Beam on Haight Street here in SF. Arthur and band seemed to
be zonked out of their minds, but they played brilliantly. I remember
"7 & & Is" being particularly intense. They played a very short set
(30 minutes or less), and spent most of the time screwing around in
between songs, stumbling about the stage, etc. But when they DID
play, they were fabulous.

Man, that's beyond tragic. I've been reading about his mental problems
for a long time now, and that makes me wonder why they'd sentence him to
PRISON. Seems like they must know he's whacked. How sad.
