If you want a good more laid-back version, I can recommend the one
cut by white Bay Area bluesman Troyce Key (with an unrecognizable
Eddie Cochran on guitar) for Warner Bros in 1958.

More sad news! Still, watch out for the remaining stock -- I just
picked up their 12-CD Bo Diddley box set at a mall store here for
less than $45. For once the term "jewel box" is appropriate!

Yes, Derek, Charly lost a lawsuit initiated by MCA Records over the use
of the Chess Records catalogue. Basically, MCA bought the catalogue from
Sugarhill Records in 1995, but it seems that Sugarhill had some previous
side deals with people like Marshall Sehorn's Red Dog Express company.
Several U.S. court decisions over the years had established MCA's legl
right to the catalogue, but Charly had always ignored these, saying that
they had no legal standing in Britain. The British case was finally
decided at the end of April, and there was a long article about it in
Billboard on the first week of May. Yes, I agree that Charly was a good
source of reissues, but I also think that they got what they deserved!

Hi everyone!

Long but worth reading! And apologies if you belong to a couple of the lists
I do and you get this twice, but I'm enjoying the great music leads I'm
getting all over the net and would like to reciprocate.

Forgive me for not remembering the names of the list members who first
mentioned these artists to me, but THANK YOU! I cannot get over how good these
CDs are...

*****

DENNIS POWELL - Ballad Of The Tin Men
Think of Todd Rundgren and Bill Lloyd and Adam Schmidt rolled into one - a
simply ASTOUNDING piece of work! I'm sure that I am one of the seven or eight
people who own this, I've seen NO promotion whatsoever and would never have
found this without the mentions here. Beautiful power pop tunes, solid
rockers, and that Beatle-ish full harmony behind a great lead vocal. Do not
walk to the store...RUN down there and get this.

BRAD JONES - Gilt Flake
Maybe old news to some of you Not Lame and Audities fans, but new to me this
year. Bruce at Not Lame was all over this so hard I had to take a shot. WOW!
He's worked with Matthew Sweet, Marshall Crenshaw and Freedy Johnson - this is
a more pop side (closer to Crenshaw's debut record than anything else by these
guys). He looks like Henry Rollins before the tattoos and before pumping up
(hmm...so does Marshall Crenshaw!) but looks deceive.

BRIAN LEACH - The Sunrise Nearly Killed Me
Who _is_ this guy, and where the hell has he been? If he was in another
recorded band I'm not placing it but I'd be happy to dig out the records or go
hunt them down. "Everybody Loves My Girlfriend (But Me)" is an instant
classic! Opening track could have been an outtake from Matthew Sweet's
"Girlfriend" CD if that's a clue. Highly recommended!

Up on my hit list (gotta gettem when they arrive!)

THE EELS
Hey, anything that E or Parthenon Huxley does is OK by me. Glad to see both
guys put something out in the same year!

PERFECT
Okay, I keep hearing about Tommy Stinson's new band. So....where is this??

TONIO K
Gadfly is re-releasing the rest of his catalogue. A seriously overlooked
artist; much deeper and better than "Life In The Foodchain", although that's a
great CD.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
New CD in September but still no American deal?? I didn't find "Where's The
Bone" until this summer and that was an early 1995 release. Funny, poignant,
rockin and soulful band.

THE ODDS
I can't disclose the title, but I'll drive to Canada to buy this if WEA
America fucks up. Still playing "Good Weird Feeling" as much as anything over
the past two years.

THE FLASHCUBES
If there is a God, this anthology will see the light of day by Fall. Then all
of you who didn't live in NY for the past 20 years can revel in what you
missed. The Band That Shoulda Been.

TRIBUTES
my weak spot - I buy most of them. There's usually something good, especially
if Greg releases them on eggBert! Especially looking forward to BADFINGER,
RASPBERRIES, BIG STAR, CHILTON and CHEAP TRICK (I wouldn't be surprised if
Mitch Easter was on every single one of them, either!) Please let me know what
your favorite trib discs are - maybe I'm missing a few!

And if you have too much free time, stop by my website (only some text and a
few links right now, I'm afraid) at:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/8282

...and let me know what you like, too!

Rock On!
Bill

A few weeks back folks were talking about Cramps stuff on video.

The video for "TV Set" can be found on "The Beast of I.R.S. Video" which came
out back in 1984. It also has the Fleshtones "Right Side of a Good Thing"
video on it. I found a used copy for five bucks a few years back.

I have video of the Cramps at the I-Beam in S.F. from 1984 and 1986. Both
shows run about an hour. They were shot with one camera on a tripod in the
back of the joint. The '84 show has Click Mort on guitar, the '86 has Candy
on bass.

I also have a 1991 show from Belgium. It's shot with a camcorder from the
balcony. The most recent show I have is from 11/94 in Pittsburg, shot with a
camcorder again, but closer to the stage. Tacked onto the end of that tape
are the Cramps doing "Ultra Twist" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

A friend showed me Lux and Ivy being interviewed on a short lived Comedy
Central talk show with Alan Havey from a few years back. It was a pretty good
interview, they sat on the couch and talked about collecting records and
other stuff for quite a while. Havey seemed actually interested in them. When
asked about the weirdest thing that ever happened to them while playing Lux
relates a tale about a guy masturbating in front of the stage.

I have a clip from the Peppermint Lounge of the Cramps with Congo doing
"Human Fly" from an episode of George Tabb's Manhattan cable public access
show "Destroy Television." I assume a complete show exists.

I remember that the Cramps hosted 120 minutes a few years back. A friend of
mine went to the taping and watched them play songs from "Flame Job" live but
I never saw it.

If you're looking for Cramps video check out the ads in the back of Maximum
Rock and Roll. There's an outfit called Hardcore Video run by a guy named
Pete and I think that he has some stuff and I remember seeing an ad placed by
G.G. Allin's brother Merle who I think had Cramps video too (if I remember
correctly the clip that was shown on "Destroy Television" came from Merle.)
