My friend steve Lorber runs Metro Music, a mail order record & CD store.
They have a home page at:

http://www.idsonline.com/business/ (call 301-622-2473).He definitely
carries Strawberry Alarm Clock CDs.

Also, yesterday someone was touting the Doug Powell Cd - I must agree. It
is terrific!

Regarding the MM; yes, if you liked the first LP this one is essential. It contains the entire second LP-
"Bonniwell's Music Machine" plus some singles and cuts from the original line up (first LP). If you have the Rhino
compilation that came out about a dozen years ago you are already familar with the some of the tracks on this disc.
It should be noted that this compilation contains nothing from the "Talk Talk" LP.

As usual for a Sundaze release, the packaging contains extensive linear notes and the sound is excellent.

Hello Music Machine fans, can anyone tell me if a Sundazed CD called "Beyond the Garage" is worth picking up?

Same question about the Collins Kids, "Rockin' on TV."

thanks

This film is a bizarre period piece starring "Candy" Bergin. I haven't seen it in years, but if I recall it takes place on a
remote island off of Greece. A radio-active something or other falls into the ocean, and dead fish begin floating all
over the place.

The movie contains some bizarre twistsurflimborocknroll and everybody in fishnet tanktops and bikinis dancing. It's
one of the those flicks that has gone on to cult status.

I guess it's like Barbarella meet Gidget.

I tried to post this about a week ago, but never saw it on the
list:

This is slightly off topic, but since the subject of the Beach
Boys topic was raised, I was wondering what people know about the
Beach Boys box set that came out within the last couple of years.
I heard that it's got a lot of the legendary Smile album on it,
but I don't know what else is on it. Also, is Smile ever going to
be released?

I remember having seen this film 10 years ago back in Greece. It was directed
by Michael Kakoyiannis who could have the Oscar with the classic drama "Stella"
in the late fifties.
It is a weird film. U have the local people of a small island hosting visitors
from Athens (among them is an American tourist : Candice Bergen) and the film is rather a comedy. On the other side of the island,in a rocky shore, a radio-active thing falls and causes all the fishes dead. Two British navy officers land
on that remote shore to find the radio-active thing. This part is a science fiction movie. They act secretly , trying not to be seen by the people in the
inhabited part of the island who are having a party........

There has been much scribed lately about cool-out SUNDAZED releases...Anyone
know a good way to get a SUNDAZED catalog? The CHOIR PRACTICE and Standells
releases are mondo-marvy IMHO...
Also, speaking of the Standells, anyone ever seen them on THE MUNSTERS? Too
much! I'd love to get a video comp of rock bands, live or cartoon, on 60s
shows, if anyone has any advice...
Lastly, was there ever a sound-track for POLYESTER-for which Chris Stein and
Debbie Harry wrote a lot of music?

Questioningly, Lounge-Laura

You would have to include the Beau Brummels appearance

of the Flintstones. It's not as cool as The Standells

on the Munsters which wins out because of Herman's

spoken word beat poetry and the Munster Mansion being

filled with Frugging beatnicks. Anybody remember the surf

episode of Magilla Gorilla?

Sundazed can be reached via e-mail at mail@sundazed.com. They also have a
pretty spiffy web site (www.sundazed.com/sunhome.html) that tends to be
more up to date than the printed catalog. You might also fax them at
(518) 731-9492, or phone to 1-800-295-8079.

Love the bit on the 'Good Things Are Happening' CD where Leo asks the
Pullice their opinion of Manfred Mann. After a few positive comments about
'Little Red Book' they then perform a hatchet job on 'I'm A Lover Not A
Fighter' (via the Kinks). What they lose in polish they more than gain in
charm though.

This is shaping up to be quite a nice little series. The Beau Brummels
rarities CD and the Autumn and Scorpio "Teen" collections are great. It's
a pity Big Beat could not compile all the Golliwogs tracks though (the early
singles were on Fantasy proper so we'll let them off). Each CD contains a
few weak cuts, but at 70+ minutes running time who's complaining.

Does anyone with the more "HIPPY" looking CD's in the series have an opinion
on them they would like to share? Is it fair to judge the book by the
proverbial cover? Some of the bands look at bit, well you know, suspect.

"Makin' with the Magilla". Great song! I wished that the Standells
were not as out of tune on the Munsters, but cool stuff.

Actually, The Hook on Ironside were pretty good as well. They had
one album on UNI called "The Hook Will Grab You". Anyone know about these
guys?

     Lance asks...

Hello Music Machine fans, can anyone tell me if a Sundazed CD called "Beyond the
Garage" is worth picking up?

Gawd, YES!!! This CD contains all the tracks from the 2nd Music Machine
album ("Bonniwell's Music Machine," Warner Brothers 1967 - which, in my
opinion, is superior to the "Talk Talk" album), one track previously
only available on a flexdisc issued with a German magazine in the '80s,
and a bunch of previously unheard tracks. The only disappointing thing
about the CD is the fact that it doesn't contain the five or six
outstanding outtakes that were issued on the now-out-of-print Rhino LP,
"The Best of the Music Machine."

Same question about the Collins Kids, "Rockin' on TV."

I don't know how good the sound quality is on this CD, as I don't own
it, but the performances are all excellent. (I have a bootleg video
containing these performances.) BTW, I saw the Collins Kids backed by
the Dave & Deke Combo a few years ago, and Larry is STILL a smokin'
        guitar player!

We've covered this topic before, but I ALWAYS like to talk about it. How
about maybe the ultimate: The Seeds on "The Mothers In Law"????
(Dreadful show, by the way--I doubt Nick at Nite will bother with this
turkey). The episode, as I recall, has the Seeds setting up in the main
characters' living room and synching to an edited-down "Pushin' Too
Hard." The band gets some lines, too. The plot, as I recall, has the
Seeds being managed by someone in the cast (??) and they later have the
(hammy) actors doing an awful rock 'n' roll song. They gave the Seeds a
fake name, I want to say "The Amoeba"? (I think). This show is in color,
just right for Sky's freaky shirt.

The new Music Machine album is terrific. One of the best parts of the package
is the liner contribution of Sean Bonniwell. Man, does he like to write about
himself. And you can order his autobiography for something like $40. Anyone
read it?

Capitol has been funny about "Smile" lately. The box set from '93 has about a
dozen songs/snippets that were to have gone on "Smile" and are, without
exception, extremely interesting. There was an official proclamation from
Capitol about two years ago that the "Smile" sessions would be released, but
that apparently has been shelved. There was to have been a "Pet Sounds"
double-CD released in May with that album getting a sort of "Beatles
Anthology" treatment, but its release has been pushed back to September.
I interviewed Mike Love two weeks ago in advance of yet another Beach Boys
show in my town and he said "Smile" will never be released "because it's not
finished." No kidding, Mike! That's why we want to hear it!
He also said that the "Pet Sounds" box has been delayed because the non-Brian
Beach Boys were upset about David Leaf's liner notes, which, as Mike put it,
"further deify Brian." (He said he didn't mind deifying Brian but that the
others should get recognition for their execution of the album, which is fair
enough I guess.)
Even though the Beach Boys are a pretty sad joke these days and Mike one of
the chief forces in that status, he's still pretty fun to interview because
you never know what he'll say. I asked him if he liked Brian and Van Dyke
Parks' "Orange Crate Art," which I find pleasant, and he conjured up this
defensive chuckle and said he never bothered because he heard it was all Van
Dyke's songs with Brian singing (which it is) and who would want to hear an
album of Van Dyke Parks' songs? Good grief, Mike.
As for the Beach Boys show, it was the same as the other seven times I've
seen 'em (of course, minus Dennis flailing away in his own world while
another drummer kept time). And Carl's voice is still pretty.
Sorry this went on so long.
Also, there are bootleg "Smile" sessions available. I saw a 2-CD set in the
Midnight catalog a while back for around $60. If someone can comment on the
content and quality of that set, I'd love to hear it.

Matt
