The Hangmen (in DC) eventually became the Rosslyn Mountain Boys, who had
two great LPs in the 70s (I still see them occasionally in used record
stores). The lead singer was Joe Triplett, who now lives in Frederick,
MD, and the drummer was Bob Berberich, who lives near Joe. Bob left the
Hangmen to form Grin with Nils Lofgren. I hope to interview Bob for a
future issue of Foster Child (unless Blair asks me to do it for "Teen
Sceen" first - hint, hint).

The Beach Boys Sub Pop EP is still for sale at Yesterday & Today Records

they do mail order (they have a LOT of 45s - over 200,000!) Tell him
Robbie sent you. Good luck.

This is "I Turned Into A Helium Balloon" on Big Beat, and indeed is the

I think the real reason behind the delay of the Pet Sounds box is that the
non-Brian Beach Boys don't want it to interfere with the sales of their soon
to be released CD of re-recordings of their tunes with some of Nashville's
biggest stars (yawn!) A sure fire snoozer in my book. The box sounds great
mono and stereo versions of the album, tracking sessions, alternate cuts, the
works. I had my long green set aside for the thing. And I can't buy it 'cause
of a friggin' sure to be a turd Country CD.

My Hate/Love relationship with the Beach Boys goes on and on. "The others
should get recognition for their execution of the album" yeah right. I don't
see a composition credit for any Beach Boy on those songs 'cept for Brian.
And those studio cats sure played pretty on it. The Boys did sing the parts
just like Brian told 'em to but I bet the album would sound just as good
without 'em. What does Mike Love deserve to be deified for? God Only Knows!

As long as we're still talking about COOL TV, anybody
remember The last episode of the MONKEES where Tim
Buckley does an acoustic version of SONG OF THE
SIREN? Really nice. The album version chokes though...

Even cooler is the second-to-last episode, where Frank Zappa,
dressed as Michael Nesmith (complete with eight-button shirt and
wool cap) "interviews" Michael Nesmith, dressed as Frank Zappa
(fake nose, wig and mustache)! A very surreal moment, for sure! The
best line is "Nez" (Zappa) saying to "Frank" (Nez), "Are you
calling our Monkee music BANAL and INSIPID?!" The scene ends with
Frank Zappa (dressed as Frank Zappa) smashing up an old car with a

Wait a minute - I thought "raw filled with covers screamers" ARE "must
have genuine classics"! But if you're looking for originals, this will
dissapoint you. I don't have it in front of me, but I believe it's ALL
covers. However, half of them are tuff r&b rave-ups a la The Shadows Of
Knight, including a killer version of The Small Faces' "Whatcha Gonna Do
About It." Easily worth the 10 bucks most vendors are asking.

There's also a pricy 3 LP box set from a few years back, containing
everything The Boots ever did. Their second album is full of Graham
Bond-ish Soul stuff, and the third rounds up some live tracks, and the
non-LP "Gaby," which is great and can also now be heard (if memory serves
me) on the recent "Boom Boom" comp of German mid-60s bands.

Sub Pop has branched out in similar ways in the past. I remember seeing
a House of Pain 7". On a similar off-topic note, I took my mom to see
Neil Young last night and noticed that Greg Dulli lost all his weight.

 Dear Michael,

This e-mail is in response to your recent inquiry regarding SAN JOSE TODAZE
 YESTERDAY.

Thanks for your interest in the SJTY CD. All the participants and members of
the bands that are involved are very excited about the fact that there’s
interest in what we all did 30 years ago and are amazed that there’s any
interest in what we’re doing now.

When a number of us were initially contacted for interviews in 1991 by the
editors of Cream Puff War (a fanzine that focuses on the ’60s SF Bay Area
music scene), we were all blown away to find out that there was a cult,
underground market that exists in Europe, Japan, Australia, and the U.S. for
the ‘60s San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area bands. The response to the first two
issues was overwhelming and sold out worldwide. They reprinted Issue #1
(which also sold out) and are considering a second printing of Issue #2 (the
South Bay bands issue) soon. They’re currently working on Issue #3 and will
feature other San Francisco Bay Area and San Jose South Bay bands from the
 era.

Some of us have never stopped playing and have remained active in the music
scene both locally and nationally. The majority, however, have been inactive
or involved on a minimum level. The "fanzine" articles prompted some of the
remaining musicians to resurface in various groupings over the last few
years. An article by Todd S. Inoue that appeared in the fall of 1994 in Metro
(a San Jose, CA weekly newspaper), in a music column called "Beat Street,"
suggested that young local bands should pay homage to the ’60s San Jose bands
like the Count Five, and the Syndicate of Sound, by covering one of the
"hits" like "Psychotic Reaction," and provided the impetus that motivated
some of us to begin the dialogue that resulted in the CD. Todd also wrote a
very nice article about the SJTY recording project, and it appeared in the
 September 28-October 4, 1995 issue of Metro.

The primary focus of the album is the music of the ‘60 s—played in the ‘ 90s—by
members of middle ’60s to early ’70s South Bay bands, with a smattering of
San Francisco and Greater SF Bay Area bands represented (as we all
interacted, played with one another, and hung out together). The bands that
are wholly represented on the recording are the Syndicate of Sound, who
re-formed for their 25th Reunion in 1990 with four of the five original
members, and me (I recorded with them in the ’60s, while playing in other
bands represented), and the Chocolate Watchband, who are also reforming for a
separate recording project of covers and original music (which is currently
underway). Assorted musicians from other area bands of the era comprise the
rest of the project and include members of: the Count Five, Moby Grape,
Otherside, Lee Michaels, Bogus Thunder, Tingle Guild, Kidd Afrika, Jackson
Street, Sons of Champlin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Boogie, Rhythm
Dukes, Rocky Ericson, Stained Glass, Muscrat Fun, Mourning Reign, Giant
Sunflower, Topsiders, Vejtibles, and the Mojo Men.

In addition to the Syndicate of Sound and the Chocolate Watchband, some of
the participants are currently in other well known Bay Area bands now, such
as: Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers), Jerry Miller (Moby Grape and Jerry
Miller Band), and TJ Politzer, John Aughney and me (Sundogs).

Jim Phillips, a major poster artist of the era, did the cover art. Jim is
currently doing posters for the resurrected ‘60s San Francisco Family Dog
Productions (currently doing shows at the Maritime Hall in San Francisco) who
were responsible for the Avalon Ballroom and Family Dog on the Great Highway
shows of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Jim is internationally acclaimed and has
done major work in the surf and natural food industries as well.

There was also an article on the CD in the January issue of Goldmine magazine
(an international record collector magazine), by Alec Palao (a co-editor of
Cream Puff War) and it was a real plus, —we got e-mail from all over the
country and France & Italy... the "buzz" is spreading.

The CD will be ready in September. —I'’ll add you to my e-mail database and
advise you when it’s available for sale. It will be in some Bay Area stores
we are talking with now, or you can order it directly. —Just e-mail me your
request and I’'ll send you the address. We'’ll be initially releasing it on our
own indie label, SBR (South Bay Records), but will be negotiating with larger
Indies and a few major labels who’ve expressed interest.

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please feel
free to contact me at my e-mail address, or write: SBR, 3906 Yerba Buena
 Ave., San Jose, CA 95121-1041.

Once again, thank you for all your support.

 Warmest regards,
 Ned Torney
