Scott:

I look at the Beach Boys without Brian like Credence without Fogerty or the
Dallas Cowboys without Emmitt and Aikman. Very good, but not Hall Of Fame
material.

I'd give the nod to the Beach Boys, for at least they went out there without
Brian and pulled their weight on the road. And I'm sure that every one of them
contributed to the material in some way (certainly they deserve more credit
that Eugene "Co-writer" Landry!!).

But the bottom line is that every time Mike Love opens his mouth to utter
anything that Brian Wilson did not put in there (IOW, anytime Mike offers an
OPINION), the Beach Boys take a huge step backwards. The current Beach Boys
road show is like a homecoming parade from Hell, an obese juggernaut playing
ballparks, political conventions and State Fairs. Ugh!!

I have the album. I love it.
They are poweful raw beatscreamer.I think they were influenced from
early Pretty Things. They are one of best German beat.
But the song Enchanted Sea is just moody .

I have a boot video of them Playing" Gloria" and "In the Midnight hour"

They are a icon of German beat and R&B with hard edge.

Someone asked whether there is a video compilation of 60's punk
band appearances on sit coms and cartoons. I've always dreamed of
such a comp, but to my knowledge nothing legitimate exists.
However, I do have a bootleg quality tape that contains the
Seed's (aka, the Warts) Mothers-in-Law appearance (which is
hilarious, not to mention my first childhood memory of garage
rock) and the Standells appearance on the Munsters, as well as
choice video nuggets from the Shadows of Knight, Chocolate
Watchband, 13th Floor Elevators, Electric Prunes, Castaways, Amboy
Dukes, Blue Cheer, the Nazz, Blues Magoos, Bad Seeds, Zakaray
Thaks, Leaves, and the MC5. I bought it years ago from a guy who
may possibly still be in business at this address. His name is
Mark Rosen (the business is called Vintage Videos) and his address
is (was?) 1 DuBois Road, New Paltz, New York 12561.

By the way, one appearance I haven't seen mentioned and I've
always wondered about was an episode of Get Smart which featured a
heavy psychedelic band called the Sacred Cows who engaged in
musical mind control. Does anyone know anything about these guys?

I think I may have related this story before, at least to some of you...

A friend of a friend needed to sublet his NYC apartment for the summer,
as he was going to be out-of-town. After some intense searching, he
finally found what looked to be a suitable candidate. The person seemed
perfect: they could afford it, blah-blah-blah.

Well, the guy whose apt it was got to talking to this person. As would
often happen, talk turned to music. Turns out they enjoyed manyuch of the
same sounds. In fact, both were big Beach Boys fans (especially the
early stuff). Things seemed good.

Then it happened.

It was then that the prospective summertime tenant said that he was
actually pretty friendly with Mike Love. And that, when Mike was in
whatever city this guy was in, he'd often drop in.

"Sorry," said the guy whose apt it was, "you can't live here." (This guy
really *hated* Mike Love.)

While I don't have my record collection in front of me I can tell you that
the The Boys were a great British band from the late 7Ts. They released a
slew of records on Nems Records starting in 1977. Recently Dojo Records in
England compiled the group's first two albums "The Boys" & "Alternative
Chartbusters" on one easy to handle disc that is well worth seeking out.

When I asked who was the owner of this fine looking release I was told that
it was one of the other partners a gent by the name of Bob Kalina (sp) who by
chance was also one of the authors of the Powder Puffs single. Bobby, it

The Vikings (who include ex-Devil Dogs bassist Steve Baise) were, like
Los Primos (another group with an ex-Devil Dog), actually formed while
the D. Dogs were still a band.

Steve Baise met his wife, Heidi (who was then drumming for Perfect Pop
recording artists The Blind Bats), in Oslo when the DD were on tour. He
and Heidi spent a fair amount of time in Oslo and he played some shows at
RockAll, etc., with friends from the Oslo crowd. Some of these were
billed as "Steve & the Devil Frogs," and when they decided to record, the
original moniker was "God Lived" (think about it.) Eventually, though,
they settled on the Vikings (which many of their friends thought was old
and ridiculous, but...)

Anyway, the band also includes members of Kare & the Cavemen, TRBNGR, and
The Yum Yums (the latter being Mort Henricksen, who was also in the
Cosmic Dropouts.)

Besides the CD, there's also a couple singles, but some of that material
is included on the disc.

As to the First Time, The Boys version is great, but I still prefer the
dirtied-up version recorded by The Fingers a few years back.

Another band who adopted the Vanilla Fudge style was the Rotary Connection.
They liked to apply the Fudge treatment to Rolling Stones tunes. I

had a few LPs you might want to check out if this is your thing.

Don't think they did "Up on the Roof" though.

Does anyone have the scoop on this disk and

Mark,

Firstly thanks for the feedback concerning the Berkley (hmm that spelling
does not look right) eps in the 'Nuggets from the Golden State' series. I
would like to hear the Country Joe stuff.

'I Turned Into A Helium Balloon' is not strictly part of the 'Golden State'
series though it is annotated and compiled by Alec Palao and has a catalogue
number slap bang in the middle of 'Crystalize Your Mind' and 'The Scorpio
Records Story'. The focus is on the Challenge label and features twelve
tracks froom We The People, both sides of the second Brogues single, five
songs from Fenwyck (rather good psych'/folk-rock), two Knickerbockers demos
and assortments from Dial Records (inc. 'Psychedelic Siren' by the
Daybreakers). All thirty tracks are superb and there are a number of
unreleased We The People tracks which will take your breath away, for
instance the rerecorded 'My Brother The Man' - simply the *best* Kinks
rip-off EVER. Fleshtones please do this song.

BUYER BEWARE. The track listing on 'Balloon' closely follows that of
'Orange, Sugar & Chocolate' on Sundazed. So unless you are a completist nut
check the tracking first. In short this CD is another triumph by Alec and
the folk at BIG BEAT. And no they have not payed me to say this! ;-)

CONSUMER FEEBACK TIME. Why is it that Crypt and Big Beat can crank out
these great collections stuffed full of on the whole top notch tracks while
our friends at A.I.P. issue the UK Freakbeat series on CD with only five
*bonus* numbers? The other day I was standing in the record shop and in one
hand held the CD version of Freakbeat Vo.1 (22 tracks) and in the other
Garage Punk Unknowns Vol.2 (29 tracks). Now it does not take a genius to
work out which one I bought!

Subject: The Victims (Australian bunch), plus The Scientists

In regards to The Hoodoo Gurus thread that went in today, I brought up
Dave Faulkner's punk group from the late 70s, The Victims, mentioning
their song "Television Addict." Joe Emery soon e-mailed me privately
asking for more info. I figured there may be others interested, so I
decided to give the group more info.

First off, if you just want to hear that one song, try and find a comp
called "Where Birdmen Flew." I'm betting that it's a boot, but it's got
some great Aussie sounds from the late 70s thru early 80s, including
Radio Birdman, The Victims, and The Scientists' "Frantic Romantic."

But Joe's question concerned The Victims, Dave Faulkner's group. So...
the mini-LP sitting on my lap right now is The Victims' "All Loud On The
Western Front" released by Timberyard Records (PO Box 459 Newtown NSW
2042 AUSTRALIA) in 1989 (and distributed by Waterfront Records, which
may make it at least a little bit easier for some of you to find.). The
eight songs that appear on it were recorded (in Perth, I would assume,
since that was the band's home) between 11/77 and 3/78.

Track Listing:
Side 1:
Television Addict
Flipped Out Over You
High School Girls
TV Freak

Side 2:
I Understand
Open Your Eyes
Perth Is A Culture Shock
Disco Junkies

The band's lineup: Dave (Flick) Faulkner (guitar, vocals), James Baker
(drums), and Rudolph V (bass).

The band broke up sometime in the Spring of '79, I guess, since the inner
sleeve has an article from RAM printed April 20, '79, talking about the
band's final gig. After this, Dave took off for Europe and the US. I
believe he lived in NYC for about 6 months in 1980, where he became pals
with Keith Streng of the Fleshtones. James Baker? Well, obviously he
was in the Hoodoo Gurus for a while, as well as running his own band, The
James Baker Experience (and doing a hundred other things). I don't know
about Rudolph V.

Back to James Baker, tho'.

I've got another Timberyard record in my hand now, probably released
right around the same time as that Victims rerelease. This one's called
"Pissed On Another Planet" and it's by The Scientists. It was recorded
in 1979 at the same studio The Victims used, Sweet Corn in Perth.

The lineup for the first two of the six tracks (the first single, I
believe) is:

Kim Salmon (guitar), Rod Radalj (guitar), James Baker (drums), and Dennis
Byrne (bass). So it's pretty clear what Baker did when the Victims broke
up. Those tracks were "Frantic Romantic" (one of the best power pop
songs I've ever heard) and "Shake (Together Tonight)." The other four
tracks - "Last Night," "Pissed On Another Planet," "Bet Ya Lyin'," and
"It's For Real" - see Radalj and Byrne being replaced by Ben Juniper and
Ian Sharples, respectively. I don't nkow about Byrne, Juniper, and
Sharples, but Radalj played with the Hoodoo Gurus for a bit later on.

This EP is not only fantastic music, but serves to remind us that The
Scientists did *not* start out doing the swampy-noise stuff many came to
know them for later on. (It was also one of these early lineups that
reformed in February, '95 for a gig on a Perth hotel rooftop. See Teen
Scene #52 for a report on that one.)

Subject: Hoodoo Gurus new LP...

The Hoodoo Gurus new LP (CD) "Blue Cave" has been out for a little while in
Australia. Haven't heard it (not being a big fan of the band), but if you
liked the last release you'll probably like this one. Dunno what label it's
on, and I'd imagine they will tour the US. (Why don't cool US bands like
Girl Trouble, The Lyres, etc etc ever tour Australia? Pearl Jam just ain't
the same kinda thing...)

Subject: More Scientists/Victims...

For all those interested in more pre-swamp Scientists noise, check out their
debut self-titled LP from c.1981; this was re-issued in about 1986 and can
be had for c.$30 Australian if ya can find it. Not the greatest thing the
band ever did, but still essential. Even better than this is the now
impossible-to-find limited-edition release "Rubber Never Sleeps" cassette
(only), on Au Go Go from 1985. This contains some really early (1979) live
Scientists playing to a desultory crowd at the Uni of Western Australia,
plus lots of other rare live stuff with the varying line-ups the band had
over the years.

Re the ex-members of the Victims/Scientists, I can't remember what Dennis
Byrne and Rudloph V went on to do, but Ben Juniper and Ian Sharples played
with later incarnations of the Scientists, with Roddy Radlj also breakin'
strings for various bands at various times. James Baker of course drummed
for the Beasts of Bourbon (featuring members of the then-current Scientists
line-up Kim Salmon and Boris Sudovic) during 1983-1988/9 after being booted
outta the Hoodoo Gurus for not having a serious enough 'attitude', or so the
story goes.

For a complete rundown on the Scientists entire career (including ex
members), full discography and interview with Kim Salmon, see issue #2 of
'Prehistoric Sounds' fanzine, an excellent zine covering Aussie independent
music 1976-1990 put out by Ian MacFarlane. I can't remember the address, but
I got mine for c.$6 Australian (and all my Scientists/Victims gear) from Au
Go Go in Melbourne (Au Go Go Records, GPO Box 342d, Melbourne, Victoria,
3001, Australia). They have a really good mailorder service; while yer at it
pick up the Australian New Music Guide volumes 1 & 2 (put out by the same
guy) - these detail ALL Aussie independent relaeses from 1976 onwards.
Issues 1 & 3 of 'Prehistoric Sounds' would probably also interest BOMP-net
readers, covering the Saints, Birthday Party, Aussie 60's/garage scene (such
as it is/was), Lipstick Killers, Psycho Surgeons, etc with #3 being the all
Radio Birdman/Visitors/Deniz Tek/et al issue. Amazing stuff. And no, I don't
have any connection with Au Go Go or Prehistoric Sounds - I just dig the music.

Five things burnin' my barn at the moment:

1. COLOURED BALLS - Ball Power LP (Heavy prog/sharpie rock from Melbourne, 1973)
2. BIG SAMBO - 'At The Party' (from 'At The Party' LP on Candy Records)
3. SONICS - Maintaining My Cool CD (1966 Jerden killers)
4. TELL TALE HEARTS - EVERYTHING! (Especially 'The Now Sound...' MLP)
5. Hearing WARREN SMITH's 'Uranium Rock' as PIPED MUZAK (I kid you not!) in my
local shopping centre! Wedged in between all the Wings/Captain and Tenille
shit is WARREN SMITH! (Cramps cover this song on 'Bad Music...')
