What total bullshit by Tim Gassen. I think he missed all the fun at
Treblefest since he focused on what OTHERS were doing, not himself. I came
to have fun , and dammit I had fun. I didn't give a shit about others'
attitudes-they were all approachable and friendly to me! ( There is such an
apparant mean-spiritedness to Tim's article)
Can you say jealousy? Why must these bands feel like they are
competeing?
Booooo for Tim Gassen's article!

Ok, Ok...I was wrong on the name, knew it! It's not "Dan" Dexter about whom I
was inquiring...it was DAVE DEXTER...Now, for you exotica-types, he did some
stuff with Les Baxter...and to you Bomp!-types, he was also involved with
American-releases of early Beatles stuff...So, the lists oddly converge(as oft
they do!) A Beatles-Baxter connection, via Dexter! BUT THAT'S ALL I KNOW!
And I need you philes to help me piece the rest of this together... HELP@!

I believe that Dave Dexter was a staff producer at Capitol in the
'50s-'60s. That's why his name is on a lot of old Capitol records.
What was your original question again?

Hi

There's a UK mag out called SUSSED which is a Mod & BritPop cool mag and I'm
trying to track down issue #2 which has a small article on me (RALPH).

If it's available in the US or if anyone can get me one, I will gladly
pay/trade for it. Yes, I've written them, but no reply.

Thanks

Subject: Treble Fest!

Hi All, Michael from 360 Twist! records and the element 79 chiming in about
Treble Fest '96...First of all I'd like to say that all of us who were
involved with putting on this event were really excited about how everything
turned out...We found the crowds AND the bands to be all first class...and
had no problems with ego coming from anybody. I'd also want to thank
everybody for coming...We originally came up with the idea to do the festival
after we found out there was gonna be no Garage Shock this year, which bummed
us out so thus in February of this year we started working on it...and what a
job it turned out to be!!! Anyways we didn't make a million dollars off the
event(the bar did though!) but we'd like to think that everybody had a good
time at the thing(good time=success)...Anyways I've been reading a lot of
hoopla on Mr. Tim Gassen and his Bravado re: his band ego ect...so I just
wanted to give my thoughts on the whole thing...During the festival Tim did
acknowledge that some of the bands seemed to be less than friendly... which I
never encountered or was personally witness to...I mean who's to say?? All I
know is everybody was nice to me. Anyhow, I wanted to mention that when the
Marshmallow Overcoat got done playing Tim was completely bummed out with how
his band had played...His impressions were that they paused too much between
songs and were just plain out of shape from not having played out enough
lately...(It also didn't help that he guzzled a half bottle of
tequila!!!...TOTAL DESTRUCTION!!)...and the rest of the band was bummed
too...Anyways he never mentioned as you can also see in his article that he
thought his band blew anybody away. The after hours party up at one of the
Overcoats rooms was planned by Tim who thought it would be cool to have some
people over after the show, Not realizing how many people were gonna actually
show up! Anyways after several warnings from the Hotel(and attempts to get
everybody to move to another room), he was told that if he didn't get
everybody out immediately that they were gonna lose their rooms...so thats
when he came in and made the infamous penis comment(jokingly I thought!). It
still wasn't effective though!! I also would mention that the beer you and I
were guzzling at said party was bought and paid for by Tim.

Anyways I can only say that my impression of Tim was of a super nice guy
that is totally devoted to the music he loves and the bands that play it.
Someone commented that he doesn't go to shows in the Tuscon scene and
doesn't pay for the records in his collection...Well who gives a shit? I mean
who's keeping track of what shows he goes to? And hey if you put out two 300
page books chronicling garage punk bands then I personally think your
entitled to get some promos!!! In closing I'd just say that you should try to
meet him for yourself before you decide he's such a big creep, instead of
just reading it from someone else. Anyways getting back to the music...I'm
proud to have been able to help put out their new record cause it really is
good.( If your into more psych/pop/garage type stuff then check it out if you
get the chance).

Man I think I've just about written my own book here on the bomp list so I'll
shut up...Oh yeah..Pete to answer your question on the P.A...I hear ya
brother, some of the bands sounded muffled, It wasn't that we skimped on the
sound guy(he wasn't cheap!), Its just that the guy that did do the sound was
recommended to us by a bunch of people who said that he did a good job...I
don't know if it was the equipment or the acoustics or what...If we do it
again next year that would be one of the things we'd try to do better.
Thanks again for coming to Denver!

Michael

To Glenn and all...Let me rephrase the question...I need to know the
connection between Dexter, the Beatles, and Les Baxter. What exactly did
Dexter do with Baxter, and Dexter do with the Beatles? Dexter, for instance,
is listed on Baxter's LE FEMME and apparently had more to do (and I couuld be
wwwayyyy offfff base, so don't flame me, mop-tops!) with the American
releases of early Beatles records than did George Martin. Am I right, wrong,
weak, strong, WHAT!!?

As Pete said, the ventilation at CI High bites the big weenie. But,
somehow, when there's a great show there, I always find myself back up
front again, suffering the lack of oxygen gladly for a healthy helping of
rock'n'roll stew.

Like last night's Lookout/Mint showcase... fantastic!

The Groovie Ghoulies, The Smugglers, Cub, Pansy Division, Mr. T.
Experience, & The Queers all at once... and upstairs, coincidentally, The
Prissteens were playing! That's the group with ex-Devil Dog Mighty Joe
Vincent banging the skins behind three gals whooping it up like the Del
Monas with attitude.

A great night... and I ran into Andy Shernoff, who informed me that The
Dictators will be playing Coney Island High on October 18th. YAY!

Menachem...
Thanks for providing that look at Tim Gassen's take on TrebleFest.
I had a *completely* different take on it, myself, but I guess everyone
comes away with their own opinion. I didn't get much of a chance to talk
to Tim out there... a bit at the TrebleFiesta BBQ sponsored by Cheyne of
Boss 302 on Friday afternoon, and then for a *brief* time later on that
evening. Tim seemed fairly nice, I guess. I really enjoyed talking to
the band's keyboardist, Debbie, who was very friendly and, knowing that I
was into combo organs from our talk that afternoon, told me to look it
over while they were setting up.
It really sounds like Tim didn't have too much fun, though.
Personally, I *did* feel a sense of community. Especially among the crowd
who'd come up from Texas, as well as the local gang.
Were the Neckbreakers standoff-ish? Maybe... but I know those
guys pretty well. I can see people saying Tom is, I guess, but certainly
not his brother John, the drummer. John is very nice to everyone, but is
kinda shy and humble. As to their guitarist, Jeff, he's pretty much a bit
like John, but... well, he didn't *know* anybody.
The Makers... standing in the corner and all seems to be part of
their thing... that's OK, it seems to work well for 'em.
The Hate Bombs acted aloof the final night??? Huh??? I dunno...
Ken and the guys seemed as friendly as ever to me and everyone else I was
hanging out with that evening.

Back to the sense of community thing... maybe it's just that Tim,
himself, didn't feel it. I think you have to *want* to take part,
otherwise you can't get that community bit out. You've gotta let yourself
fall into it. As one drunk girl said when she stumbled into me and
various others repeatedly on the Friday evening, "'S OK. We're all
friends here." And I had to agree.

Anyway, you'll get a detailed (more upbeat) report on TrebleFest in Teen
Scene #56, comin' at you in a couple weeks, I believe.

In a message dated 96-09-06 04:35:15 EDT, you write:

<< >(for instance, Fortune & Maltese played a great set, yet their sound was

I must agree with you, Pete, but when the guitar got turned up too loud
did you see the look on Mike Maltese's face???? I was in front of him
and couldn't help but laugh! That boy has the best facial expressions! >>

Yeah, the PA situation was completely messed up. When we played (the first
nite), it turned out that instrument cable was being used to wire the
monitors and mains, and the fact that the sound board was up in the balcony
(where nobody goes) really messed things up, too. Our bass player (who does
sound at clubs here in Philly) volunteered his services, and re-wired the PA
in time for Saturday's show, and ran the PA, too (for no pay). Plus, Jeff
Connolly used my organ (now my organ doesn't like me anymore! hee hee). As
far as I can tell, the sound was much better by the time Saturday rolled
around (I could hear every word Mr. Childish was singing). The problem at
Treblefest wasn't really the equipment, but the guy running it. Plus, some
of the bands (like the Makers and Sugar Shack) *like* the vocals
unintelligible (just ask Petep!).

Subject: The Stillroven & Suicide Commandos CDs

I just picked a couple CDs of lengendary Minneapolis bands.

The Stillroven "Cast Thy Burden Upon" on Sundazed. Great versions of I'm
not Your Stepping Stone & Hey Joe. BTW who did the original version of Hey
Joe?

&

The Suicide Commandos "Make a Record" on Mercury. The first Minneapolis
punk band in the 70s. If Twin Tone could reissue The Suicide Commandos
Commit Suicide LP that was recorded live at Jay's Longhorn in 1978 or 79.
It was right after Jonestown I think they gave away free koolaid.

Anyone know if Bomp is planning on reissuing The Hypstrz "Hypstrization"
Also recorded live at Jay's Longhorn in 1979. They were a great 60s garage
rock cover band. I recall a reviewer writing (NY Rocker?) that they must
have "Slow Death" down to under 60 seconds by that time.

And does anybody have the phone number for Get Hip Records? I had it,
