"Hi Heel Sneakers" was a hit for Tommy Tucker....if I recall.

Actually 12 of the 16 tracks are unreleased (all sides from the Gestures
three singles are included). Those familar with the "Sixites Rebellion"
series will recognize the Zombie-ish "Don't Mess Around" - included on
this compilation.

I got it.I'm astonished all of trucks are unreleased before except "Run Run

I love their sound ,and imitated Gig ticket of them with CD.

My two cents regarding the whole Tim Gassen thing. I've known Tim for
years and he's always been really nice to me, and taken any criticisms
I've had of his band, or his attititude (I was critical of his booh,
"Echoes In Time") with a grain of salt, so what can I say? Yeah, we can
all be an egomaniac at times, especially when doing something we are
way into. I guess I should say then that from myn persepctive, and from
my experience going to garage-rock-festival whatever you want to call
these shindigs, is that there's always a a division in the audience
over who was good, who sucked, etc. Plus, there's always gonna be
people there that don't like other people, I'm afraid that's human
nature. For instance, at a Garageshock we attended, we noticed a big
division between certain west coast groups (usually tagging along with
a band) and the New York crews. Neither groups seemed to like each
other, and there were instances of words being exchanged. Even in such
a narrow group as a "garage rock" group, there's still lots and lots of
difference of persoanlities and opinion. Just check out
alt.music.banana-truffle, or even the Bomp! list, for proof.

Dear Andrea,
I'm just getting started with this on-line thing, so bear with me
if I don't do all the stuff like quoting previous postings correctly.
I wanted to say that I enjoyed meeting you at Treblefest, and I
thought I'd try to clarify I few things, so, as you put it so well, "we
can all get along!"
First: Please join me in giving all at 360 Twist! a big hand for
putting on Treblefest. It was a great event, and they worked very hard to
make it happen. I'm so glad that they included me and my band, The
Marshmallow Overcoat.I had a great time, and met so many friendly and
cool folks.
Second: My Treblefest article for the Arizona Daily Star has been
taken a little out of context, perhaps. The article was (and is)
available from the paper's on-line service. If you saw it there, it would
have the complete text without comments, the complete headlines,
captions, the side-bar second article, plus all the color graphics. On
the front cover of the section there is a 10" square color photo of The
Swingin' Neckbreakers, and inside there's full color Billy Childish, plus
the Element 79! Anyway, my editor demanded from me a balanced piece, and
if the entire thing is read and considered, I think it is. (There's a lot
of positive stuff in there, but no one is discussing that!)
To sum up, in the piece I write many positive observations of
specific bands -- and I compliment ALL the bands on their performances.
It's a fact of band-life that when you get 15 different groups together
that there's bound to be a little friction here and there. That's the
real world. I wasn't trying to pick on anyone personally, but to convey
to readers that have never been in a band that there are many different
personalities in motion at an event like this. (It takes two to tango,
so I'll adnit that I can be part of that friction, too!)
I've been an active fan of almost all the bands at the festival.
(There were a few that I hadn't heard yet). You'll read very positive
things about the Swingin Neckbreakers and The Makers in my new book, for
instance. I wish all these bands (including The Hate Bombs -- who were
fabulous!) could sit down with me now (away from the heat of the
moment) and have a few beers -- I'm sure we could all get along and have
a great time. So I hope I have that chance sometime soon -- there are no
hard feelings from me toward any of the bands!
I apologize if my piece has offended anyone. That really, really
wasn't my intention. Period.
Third: Now that I have access to on-line stuff, I hope I can
clear up some mis-representations concerning me and my band. Case in
point: A fellow named Manacham Turchick resently made up quotes about
Treblefest, attributed my name to them (he said I said it), and then
posted these ficticious comments here. I don't talk to this person, and
I've never said anything like his quotes to anyone. They're made-up.
Please keep this kind of fabrication in mind when reading these
postings. Now that I "exist" on-line, please write to me directly and ask
about stuff -- I'll be glad to discuss anything with you, especially if
you disagree with something I've said or done!
If you get to know me, I hope you'll see that I stress the
positive in what I do.
Andrea, I look forward to hearing from you, as well as everyone
else who digs cool music and bands!
	Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Timothy Gassen

Dear Andrea,
Thanks for taking the time to respond! I know that some people
just plain get mad about an isue and won't even consider listening to
other opinions -- so thanks again for having an open mind. The folks at
360 Twist! are some of the best, no doubt about it!
Tell me, have you heard the "new" Bomboras CD on Dionysus? It's a
collection of their 45s, I think, but I hadn't heard a lot of it before.
They're one of my fave insto-mood outfits right now.
Any cool new stuff you can recommend?

Best --

Yikes! I'm sorry this Treblefest discussion has degenerated into a
discussion
of anyone's personality flaws, real or imagined. Tim, I don't know if you
were on the list when I brought it up, but originally I simply asked
Andrea for her impressions of the concert. Your article appeared the next
day, which I thought was a neat coincidence, so I mentioned its
existence. A couple people asked that it be posted to the list, which I
did. I supplied the main article, EXACTLY as it appeared in the Star,
with no comments of my own added to the text. Obviously I couldn't
reproduce the photos, and the sidebar article dealt with your new book,
so I only mentioned its existence, and asked if anyone had seen it yet.
I'd be happy to send a photocopy to anyone who cares, though I suspect no
one does.
As for the "fictitious comments" (i.e., Tim saying the Overcoat blew the
other bands away), these came from a friend of mine who said he heard Tim
say it. I did not hear this first-hand, so I apologize for spreading
rumors.

And now, on to something more interesting! Just in case this hasn't been
posted before, Delirium Records in the UK has a simply amazing web site
at www.delerium.co.uk, which features old articles from Freakbeat
magazine and the ENTIRE texts of both of Vernon Joynson's monumental
books, "Fuzz, Acid & Flowers" and "Tapestry Of Delights"!!!!
Discographies and histories of hundreds of obscure British and American
garage, beat and psych acts! Truly a wealth of info at your fingertips.

No kidding! On the first night there was a guy who was a bit "too
drunk" and I was a bit suspicious about his "accidentally" knocking
into me (when he did so his hand touched my ass and I wasn't the only
one this happened to!). I casually mentioned it to Mike and Max -- I
wasn't really upset by it, but they were. They asked me to point him
out to them and tell him if he got out of hand again. I'm really glad
to see that kind of chivilry (sp?) out there, and how concerned these
guys were about ALL the attendees having a good time without any problems!

Haven't got the new Bomboras...haven't bought anything "new" in a while...
sigh...my travels have nearly made me broke, not to mention rent and eating,
etc. I have to learn the fine art of sleeping on floors (I stayed at the
Denver Regency 4 nights! Ouch!) and having people feed me.

There's a cool band here in Boston called The Bald Guys. They are on tour
now with some other bands ("The Tube Tour"). 2 guitars & drums, instro
and vocals, from surf to Sonics... Check 'em out. They also sometimes go
under the name "Thee Krakens".

The words were written by the Turkish left-wing poet Nazmin Hikmet. I
don't know who did the translation, but Pete Seeger came up with the
music, based on a (traditional?) tune called "The Great Silkie." I'm told
by a local folk-music authority that there are at least two other
melodies being used with these words in Japan.

Yeah, back in the good ol' days, when the TS was between 4 & 8 pages per
ish, it came out every month. But since mid-'94, it's been a longer mag,
so it takes me a bit of time... Plus I no longer have a job that bores me
to death and gives me time to do it at work. Of course, if it weren't for
that job, I probably would never have gotten into doing the 'zine in the
first place. ;)

But the next ish should take looks of varying depth at each of the
summer's big garage fests, plus include a couple interviews, as well as
lotsa other fun stuff. More info soon.

Really? This must've been before '94 (the first one I went to),
because I don't recall any of this sort of thing at GShock '94 or '95. In
fact many of us NY types became pretty friendly with both CA & TX folks.

Completely true. Of course, the more people you put in any one
place (physical or otherwise), the greater the chances of personality
conflicts and differences of opinion. This isn't necessarily bad.

Now... as it relates to Tim's article.... As I've said already, Tim
& I didn't talk too much, but the chatting we did was amiable. He seemed
fairly nice. As to his book, I never bought it - I couldn't afford to. I
understood the pricing (small press from England, etc.), but that didn't
make it any more affordable. Maybe I'll ask someone for the new edition -
The Knights of Fuzz - for a birthday or Christmas present (any takers? ;))
But the article *did* bother me. I just kept wondering *who* Tim was
watching. And why. Maybe I'm just too self-absorbed. When I go to these
things, I'm there not only to see the bands, but to hang with my friends
from all over the place that I rarely get to see - people I've met on bomp
list, Modslist, banana-truffle, thru correspondence due to my 'zine or
another I may have written for or to, or folks I've hung out with at other
garage fests and become friendly with. At Treblefest, I had a great time
doing all of these things. And I loved the whole thing... Maybe you get

While The Queers have been a band for about 15 years now, they've been
coming on strong these last few. Their latest, on Lookout, entitled
"Don't Back Down", is another knockout punk/pop blast. The title track, a
cover of The Beach Boys' classic, is just perfect.

They've also got a 45 out, "Bubblegum Dreams", a 4-song EP, with two
covers on the flip... a version of "Little Honda" that shifts me into
third pretty quickly. Plus a version of The Muffs' "End It All" with

EXACTLY! A few people here were befuddled that I would fly all the
way to Denver and spend 100s of dollars on a trip to see a bunch of
bands, but...SO MANY OF MY FRIENDS WERE THERE! And, since we are all
scattered across the U.S., these are the only chances we get to see
each other! Of course, it IS worth it to me to fly 2,000 miles to
see bands, esp. the ones that played at T.F., because what are the
chances of these bands playing Boston any time soon? (especially
after our discussions about the "production fees" -- jeez!) BTW,
apparently the Linwood does NOT charge a production fee, so if anyone
ever wants to play there and needs the #, I can forward it.

Umm, could someone tell me a bit MORE about this? This is the first
I've heard of it!

To all:

Tim Gassen's article is the smarmiest, most pretentious fucking thing
I've EVER READ!!!!!

Actually I thought it was well written, avoided over use of the personal =
pronoun =20
and a damn good read. It did stress the "clique" angle too much at the =
end=20
though. The garage scene is no different to any other musical genre or =
indeed=20
social grouping. There are always going to be hierarchies, tis human =
nature. =20
Like it or not so many people need to dress up and hang out. In a =
perfect world there will be more bands like the Lyres sporting jeans, =
sneakers, ragged T-shirts and without a hint of pose. You need simply =
to close your eyes and listen to one of the toughest sounds around. (OK =
this is circa 'On Fyre').

Some of the observations Tim makes can certainly be levelled at the =
scene here in London. For instance it is really annoying to see a band =
and their fans leave the venue when the following group take the stage. =
In many cases both bands have strong musical similarities. So you have =
to wonder what the hell is going through these people's minds. =
Similarly get talking to someone and they often have gaping holes in =
their knowledge of even the most fundamental bands=20
(DMZ, Dictators, 'Tones, Groovies etc). Still this is not supposed to =
be a train=20
spotters convention and the world would indeed be a dull place if there =
was no=20
new or old bands to discover.

Perhaps part of Tim's gripe is that he has been into this music for =
*very* long=20
time, put out numerous records and written a very good book on the =
eighties=20
scene. Anyone remotely serious (ouch!) about garage rock should =
investigate=20
'Echoes In Time' pronto as it comes straight from the heart. Maybe it =
is a little irritating being an "elder statesmen" to see a lot of =
younger fans heap praise on *their* peers to the detriment of musicians =
who have remained true to the genre for years. Perhaps Tim should look =
at things philosophically, shrug his shoulders, smile and walk away. =
Five, ten, fifteen years time he will probably still be writing about =
his cherished music. The question is how many people at who attended =
Treblefest '96 will share his passion?=20

I do not know this guy but I hate to see someone rubbished who has =
obviously=20
done a lot of good for the scene over the years. Now change the =
subject!

You notice that the version of Don't Back Down makes the Ramones attempts
at harmoninizing seem pretty pathetic. Am i the only one kinda' of sick
of the Ramones in general, cause so many other bands do the same thing
much better and in a much more acceptable (read independent) way?

This is an interesting observation. I hadn't thought about it, actually.
I've always loved The Ramones (well, at least the recordings thru about
'81 or so... after that things were extremely hit or miss.) However,
Phil's point is well taken => The Queers do the harmonies *much* better
than The Ramones ever seem to have bothered to even *try.* Sure, my
fiancee says Joe sings in a somewhat nasal manner, but, uh... Joey doesn't
have the greatest voice, either. And those vocals on The Queers record
sound real nice... even the falsetto parts of Don't Back Down.

Teen Scene #56 will cover the 3 major garagefests of Summer, '96:

1) The Crap-Out in Vegas
Probably my thinnest coverage since I didn't actually have anyone
out there to write it up for me. Instead, I've asked numerous friends who
were there to give me their impressions... unfortunately, I've only gotten
back a few answers. Ah, well... I tried.

2) TrebleFest in Denver
All me and it's pretty damn long... I never was a good editor.

3) SleazeFest in Chapel Hill
Couldn't make it myself, but my friend Lisa went and said she'd
cover it for me. Of course, I'm still waiting to get that version... In
the meantime, my pal Eric has already submitted his take on it. If Lisa
doesn't finish hers in time, Eric gets sole billing; otherwise, they share
the limelight.

Hello Brendan,

Thanks for writing! My first book on garage/psych bands was
published in 1991, and is titled "Echoes In Time." It was sold-out only
a couple months after publication. I don't know of anyone who has any
left for sale, but who knows?
I've spent the last four years scouring the globe for
information for that book's "sequel," titled "The Knights Of Fuzz: the
garage & psychedelic music explosion, 1980-1995." It has just been
published, and I recieved some copies for the first time just last week.
(Both books are published by Borderline, a U.K. publisher with a whole
line of cool 1960s-era garage/psych books. My book is the only one of
theirs dealing with more recent bands...)
You can find out a lot more, and read a sample from the book at
the book's web site. The address is:

        http://www.azstarnet.com/~tgassen/

The book is 300 pages long, with a color cover and color photos
inside on heavy gloss paper, and was published in the U.K. (where
printing is very, very expensive) -- so it'll cost more than $20 here,
I'm sure.
Anyway, I think it's much more fun than the first book, and I
was helped by scores of the coolest record labels and bands, plus
hundreds of fans who contributed photos, info and band histories.
"The Knights Of Fuzz" is over 500,000 words in length, and I
hope that readers will see that I devoted myself to it because of one
reason: I love this music, and I want to share that passion with other
fans.
I hope to hear from you again! And as one garage-head friend of
mine says: "Don't forget the fuzz!"

Sincerely,

Timothy Gassen
