That sounds like the one. It's a pretty wild anti-establishment rant; I
haven't heard it in a few years, but the Gas Company sounds familiar.

I like Boots, and Lords but unfortunately the early Lords stuff is
difficult=20
to find even in Germany now. Their later album are reissued from=20

Sheena and the Rockets was released a album from A&M. (A&M SP 4875)
It was compiled from their 2nd and 3rd album in Japan .
The songs is original except You really got me.
The producer was Harry Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra).
So the arragement is electic pop with sythesizer.
It is different from their original sound.
They were cruder and rawer beat garage band with '60s beat style!

The guitarist Ayukawa Makoto who loves Kinks and R .Stones was from
legendary early '70s Japanese garage punk band SonHouse. And Sheena
is his wife.
Many garage beat bands influenced from them, Roosters,Mods, Rockers ,
they were released some records from Japanese major label, but I think
those are not released in outside Japan.

And there are many indee band at the time like Friction, Mirrors,Stalin,
Lizard, etc. They were called Tokyo Rockers. The sound was more rough
and aggressive .

many National Public Radio stations, at varying times (usually late

Thank you for the info! I'd really love to hear some of
Sheena and the Rokkets early stuff! I'll probably never

I really need to pick up some of the Japanese garage comps.

There's a terrific German compilation called INSTRO MANIA on the Gee Dee
label. Lots of go-go type stuff, with fascinating liner notes and photos.
Vegas Grind buff will love it. Interested parties can e-mail Gerd Dietrich
at the label and ask about ordering info: GEE-DEE@T-ONLINE.DE (Tell him I

Hey, that Martin Sheen movie I was looking for was indeed THE CALIFORNIA
KID. It all came back to me in a flash when I saw that title posted here.
Dunno how I confused Michelle Phillips with Susan Sarandon; that's sorta
like confusing Courtney Love with Winona Ryder!

BTW, I'm still looking for that ordering information on the Fleshtones fan
club record that was posted here several days ago. I thought I'd saved it,
but I can't find the file. Could that Fleshtones Hall of Fame guy please e-

Well, I used to work at a used record store, and what was my job?

Cleaning records!

Straight up Isopropyl isn't a good idea, and *NEVER* use it on 78s!!!

I always use a mixture of *distilled* water and isopropyl (and don't
substitute everclear either) at a ratio to about 8:1. I keep the mixture in
a spray bottle (check the garden department of Wal Mart) and use soft cotton
cloth to lightly wipe the records.

The reason for the alcohol is a) to help evaporate the water quicker and b)
it does help loosen dirt a bit better. Distilled water is used because tap
water sucks and contains too many particles/dirt already.

- -- Only apply pressure on stubborn fried chicken finger prints and
especially messy areas, and then let drops of the solution sit on the
record.
- -- Unless you get the cloth very dirty, only wash it with fabric softener,
and no detergent. You can use a small amount of detergent every few
washes though. Old T Shirts aren't recomended. Buy a yard of cotten
cloth from the fabric store. Your records deserve the extra expense.
- -- Always wipe the record lightly (let the weight of the cloth do the real
work) with the grooves of the record. Wiping across the grooves risks
scratches and will only grind the dirt in further.
- -- Leave one side of the record dry for wiping off excess solution, dirt and
preventing water streaks on the record. Do as much as you can with as
few rotations around the record as possible. Go around the record a few
times, then flip the cloth to the dry side to finish.
- -- Don't let the cloth get too wet, as you'll put dirt back down, and the
cloth won't be very absorbant. Save wetter areas for dirtier records.
If you cut the cloth to a good size, you can fold it over itself and
use multiple sides of the same cloth. I always used a cloth about the
size of an LP and folded it over about 4 times.
- -- Don't use your fingernails.
- -- For sticky areas (gross!) use a very very small, tiny amount of lighter
fluid. Again, not on 78's, as they aren't made of the same material.

For 78's use mildly soapy water, but not so soapy that it is sudsy!

That should about cover it. Clean records expand the life of your records
(and your needles).

I have a fairly generic question about 60s rock television.

I remember watching both Shindig and Hulabaloo when they first ran. I
vaguely recall that one of these shows was good (cool rock groups
performing live) and the other was bad (lame acts, lots of lip-synching).
I can't recall which was which. Can anyone help?

I'm just curious--I don't have a couple thousand bucks for a complete run

ventures in space, is in my opinion, the greatest all instro album ever =
made (surf or otherwise). it is by far the best and most creative record =
the ventures ever made. at times surfy, at times scary, but mostly =
dreamy outer space sounds. amazing arrangements and production, =
including angelic backing vocals on some tracks, very heavily reverbed =
drums throughout, and for effect, little snippets of amazing lap steel =
playing that will send you floating through the galaxies.

it is available for very cheap on a 2-on-1 cd. the cd is actually listed =
as "ventures play telstar/ventures in space" - since "... in space" is =
actually the 2nd of the 2 albums on that particular disc.

my advice: throw out all your man or astroman records and buy ventures =
in space. it is the real deal. (actually i do like man or astroman, but =
their stuff -- including covers of songs from that album -- pales in =
comparison)

I've heard the toothbrush method mentioned before, but it's risky. I'd only
use it on a record I didn't care about destroying. Incidentally, I've never
used it, but have gotten great results without.

When I was in San Francisco, I went to the Museum of Modern Art and saw a
piece that was a turntable with a syringe suspended about 8 inces above the
record with a laser beaming through the syringe needle onto the record, and
it played, though it skated across. Back to the drawing board!

Incidentally, D4 is a rip off. It's like buying bubbles. Why spend money
on something you can as easily make out of household products for cheaper?

Hey Laura,

It is in print and my suggestion would be to get it! I believe that you
will like it. It was the high point in the Ventures discography and is
available from One-Way (EMI) here, or as an import from England on
See-For-Miles Records. It is an album that in all probablity, will never go
out of print because it has been a steady seller since 1963.

Are you sure it was isopropyl Laura? In my experience isopropyl evaporates
on contact and is harmless. I started using it after reading an article in
a music magazine and have now used it for years without any problem. And
that includes on all the Beau Brummels, Count Five 45s I've managed to find.
No problem at all. Isopropyl is not an instant panacea, and so for example
that bashed copy of 'Dirty Water' will still look like an ex-jukebox item
afterwards. Many years ago I took some cotton and acetone (at least I think
that's what it was called) to a Little Bob Story ep. The result - TOTAL
MELTDOWN on impact. Fortunately a spare copy of the said record was soon
located. On a related note certain unscrupulous record dealers here in the
UK use lighter fuel to *skim* records. Now while that brings up a nice
shinny/new looking disc, there definitely is vinyl damage. Anyone else want
to throw in their 2p/2c worth?

Subject: Re: Tech help solicited!

It has occurred to me that someone on this mailing list might just have the
ability to help me with a problem that's vexed me for years. I have something
like 100,000 index cards crammed with info that comprises virtually every
fact known about obscure bands and recordings of the '60s. Some of this was
published once upon a time in Bomp Magazine but now I realize the only really
practical way to publish it all is on the Web.

My problem is I need to digitize it into some kind of database that could be
transferred to a website, and searchable, where details of every record, band
member and history, labels, even photos could be entered. No existing record
collecting softwhere is anywhere near exhaustive enough for these purposes. I
need a program that will run on my Mac so I can start working on this, and I
propose to put the results on line piecemeal, as they are ready, starting
almost immediately. It has been suggested I use Filemaker Pro, but though I
have the program, I don't have the time or the technical ability to set up
the database form the way it needs to be.

So: does anyone feel like helping in this worthy cause? If so, please let me
know, and thanks in advance.

the band that covered stiff little fingers' 'suspect device' was a japanese
group called anarchy. only thing is they retitled it '3 3 3' and sung all
the lyrics in japanese. yes, it's amazing, and was recently bootlegged on
the german comp. 'back to front vol.2'. i'm hoping whoever puts out those
bloodstains comps will eventually get around to a 'bloodstains over japan',
as there is apparently a wealth of relatively obscure nipponese punk
releases awaiting rediscovery.

btw, any readers out there interested in selling their punk/psych/new wave/
