I don't know about BMI, but ASCAP is sort of like a union for music
writers. It stands fot the American Society of Composers and Producers.
ASCAP protects proerty rights to songs, as they are written and
performed. How many times have we heard stories from old bluesmen, or
jazz musicians who never saw a dime for their compositions which later
became standards? ASCAP collects money for all the writers when their
music is played, sampled, covered, etc. and provides a registry for
original material...like a copyright.

Incidentally, ASCAP was founded in large part by one of my favorite
bandleaders, John Philip Sousa. No joke.

Subject: The Mystreated - Live In London

The Wild Boston Room

Thurs 16 February

Mystreated/Disturbed/Legendary Too Drunk

The first gig of '97 at the Boston Room saw a pretty good turnout
for this bill. The size no doubt aided by the venues closure for
three weeks and the Mystreated's infrequent London dates. So
after much "Hello how was Christmas" and "So what do you want
at the bar" the music began to roll just before 10pm.

The Legendary Too Drunk, as the name suggests, are a shambolic
and inept bunch at the best of times. Their covers tend to be
obvious ('You're Gonna Miss Me' and 'California Sun') and the
frontman has a very posh and at times smart-ass manner.
However he does show a strong line is self-deprecation and
reminds me so much or Jeremy Gluck. Hey maybe he's a relative?
Despite such reservations the Drunk are winners once they begin
to drown in their set. Lots of smiles at mistakes on-stage and off,
and an attitude which says "Fuck it - let's get on". Match this
with an obvious love for three minute, three chord rock songs and
a good time is had. In addition they have a killer commodity
which simply over-rides any proficiency problems. Great songs
like 'Magic Carpet Ride', 'Voodoo Too' and 'Five O'clock Girl'.
More on this later.

Usually when I see a band dressed in retro '66 gear I head for the
exit. Maybe it's a case of preferring bands to pervert their musical
influences a little. The Disturbed appear on stage decked in
matching b&w striped tee shirts, leather jackets, black
jeans/jackets and clutching Vox guitars. Think the Brood,
remember the Fuzztones and you get the picture. The first half of
the set comprised of 12 string garage-raga numbers especially
reminiscent of the mid-sixties Bay Area bands and curiously the
Barracudas again. Yeah that good! The second half took on a
more rocking garage angle with the lead player ditching the 12
string and reverting to six. This band also have some fine
originals, are much tighter than the Drunk and have two major
trump cards. A snarling Keith Relf look alike on lead vocals and
a totally insane woman playing Vox keyboards. When the organ
is not required she stands to one side, picks up a tambourine,
closes her eyes, smiles and shakes her head absorbed in the music.
Now that is garage-rock attitude. Oh to be better looking and
fifteen years younger! In short the Disturbed are a fine little band
with a great sound, good stage presence and lots of potential.
They are ready to record and definitely need signing by a label
like Detour. If there are any record biz moguls out there have a
look at their web page for more info' and some trippy pictures of
these guys. By the way they perform a neat version of 'LSD' too.

OK Mystreated fans hit "Page Down" NOW. Lord I have tried to
like this band but things will not gel. Their stage set-up is
impressive. Lots of vintage equipment and a singer/organist with
more than a passing resemblance to John Stax of the Pretty
Things. They are all excellent musicians and 'Mole' is a real
stand-out drummer. In fact his mannerisms put me in mind of the
drumming equivalent of picking up a china cup and stretching out
the little finger. Charming. Anyway wander over to the record
rack, pull down a copy of 'Pebbles : The Continent Strikes Back',
and peruse those group shots on the sleeve. You are now looking
at the Mystreated as they appeared in flesh and blood last
Thursday evening. Perhaps this is the problem with such
scholarly bands, they come across like a crazed scientists
dismembering the corpse of mix-sixties Dutch Beat. After
conducting a very thorough examination something is still
missing. And in this case that "something" is SONGS. For all
their ability, love of the genre and loyal fan base, they do not have
any killer material. A simple three-minute tune which assaults
you and sends you home smiling with the damn thing buzzing
away. Honestly I really, really tried the other night but after
thirty minutes of their Byrdsian aural wash the exit sign beckoned.

Now here is the paradox. Those Too Legendary Drunk chaps are
an honest, incompetent smiling bunch, but god bless 'em they
have songs. In fact they have songs you can bang dirty great big
six inch nails into and swing from. Who knows, with a little of
the Liam Watson magic at Toe Rag Studios they could even
deliver the pop punch of the 'Cudas. Now that would be a great
achievement. Hopefully the Disturbed will soon gain record label
interest and no doubt introduce rural Surrey to the sound of the
Mojo Men. As for the Mystreated, well I'm looking forward to
catching Mole's other band - The Embrooks - in a few weeks time.
Perhaps they will succeed in injecting some stronger material into
their set. Here's hoping.

"This Is Merseybeat" (1963 Oriole LP) was reissued on Edsel CD in the late
80s but may be out of print. Midnight Records advertises from time to time
a CD called "At The Cavern" which is a reissue (on See-For-Miles?) of
another live compilation of Merseybeat from the same time. They have also
put out a 20-track comp called "Liverpool '63/'68."

So far all I've been able to find is a compilation on Sequel called "Some
Other Guys: 32 Merseybeat Nuggets 1963-1966," which has some of the
poppier, but just as obscure Liverpool groups. I'm still looking for the
definitive collection of Merseybeat on CD, but I don't see it forthcoming
just yet.

This suggests a new thread to me... like there are some poppy hit 45s that
expose the wild side of a group on their reverse side. The Tremeloes have
this one flipside, "Let Your Hair Hang Down" which is either the flip of
"Here Comes My Baby" or "Silence Is Golden" I think. Those A-sides, while
pleasing late 60s Brit-pop, do not prepare one for the freakbeat action of
"Hair" with its amazing feedback guitar break and manic drumming. Oww!
I've bought about every other late 60s (Epic label in the US) Tremeloes 45
& lp but nothing else is that cool.

Another couple: "Sugar and Spice" by the Cryan' Shames (on Destination)
is backed with "Ben Franklin's Almanac" (also on their debut Columbia lp)
which is a blastin' bit of punkadelia, maybe the Shames' best cut?

"Out of Sight" by the Buckinghams on USA is backed with "Don't Want To
Cry," some 3-chord mayhem of the first order with a blazing geetar break
(it's also on their USA lp). Again, maybe these guys' best cut?

There are some others like this, anybody else have a fave?

Hi Laura,

My family had two at different times in the mid-seventies. A saloon model
and an estate. The Anglia went out of production in the late sixties/early
seventies and we found ours in scrap yards. Mum and Dad were not on large
incomes and what with four kids to feed most of our cars were "scrappers".
(OK put away the hankies). Both were good runners, consumed little petrol
("gas" to you) and were easy to find spares for. The saloon model had a
very distinctive back window which cut back into the body at a 30 degree
angle. You could always spot one coming down the road.

In addition to the Anglia's we had a Wolsey, a Cambridge and an Oxford. All
three were very big (by UK standards) family cars with lovely upholstered
seats, powerful engines and great suspension. They were ideal for stuffing
the kids into on summer days and then heading for the Yorkshire or
Lancashire seaside. Wow did my dad have to call into the petrol station a
lot with them though. Funnily he still has great affection for those old
bangers. They certainly taught him all he needed to know about motors.
Laura the expression "Steven, can you come out and help me bleed the brakes
for five minutes.", still rings loud and clear in my ears. Those "five"
minute sessions, on cold January nights, put me off cars for life. Period.

I have an amusing/sad story about our Anglia Saloon if anyone would care to
hear it. But after all this is the Bomp Records group!

I don't know. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls has decent camera work, crew, sets
and acting. Ed Wood's generally don't.

I've got almost all of Russ Myer's and Ed Wood's movies on tape. i love them
both, for different reasons. BTVOTD visually and technically is one of Russ'
better movies. Ed Wood's best never came close.

Wait wait wait - is it "VD" or "BEYOND VD" that's under discussion? I
assume Roger Ebert wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, not the
screenplay of the Jackie Susann novel. It seems to me he also wrote some
Roger Corman flick or something amazing...Frank, help me out...L.

OK, no one else thinks that BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS becomes
a different movie every fifteen minutes of the film????

The dialog stinks, the character developement is non-existant, the
ending is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overblown...

Don't get me wrong I like the movie, the same way I like all low budget
Blaxplotation, Chop-Socky, Ed Wood, and the like...

BUT THIS WAS WRITTEN BY ROGER EBERT!!! THIS MAN ROUTINELY PANS
OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK!!! IT'S THE SAME AS REX REED APPEARING IN
"MYRA BRECKINRIDGE" AND BAD MOUTHING ANYONE ELSE AS A PERFORMER.

Subject: "Estrus Aid" starts now!

I've been thinking about the Estrus fire and the apparent loss of the master
tapes to so much good stuff -- Man or Astro-Man?, Galaxy Trio, Volcanoes,
Satan's Pilgrims, Jackie & the Cedrics, Woggles, etc., etc. -- and I wanted
to adopt the equivalent of a black armband or something.

So I went to Wax'n'Facts, which is pretty much Atlanta's best record store,
and started looking for Estrus souvenirs. I charged a buncha Estrus vinyl on
my credit card but was fully aware that this wouldn't help the label much.
The store also had a number of cool shirts with the logos of Estrus bands,
but none with any kind of Estrus logo imprinted on them. Again, not much
help to Dave and the whole Estrus operation, either.

So then I was home last night watching the Golden Globe award show and I saw
lots of AIDS ribbons on the lapels of celebrities, and then it hit me -- a
GREAT idea for helping Estrus generate some rebuilding money. How about a
special button, T-shirt, sweat shirt, and jacket decoated with a blazing
Estrus logo? (A cool Estrus crest, surrounded by stylized flames...)

These items could be sold for a considerable markup over their cost,
specifically as a fundraiser. For example, the button could sell for $5, and
the t-shirt for $15 or $20. The sweat shirt could be, say, $30 and the
jacket (I'm thinking of a typical $25 black denim jeans jacket with a large
Estrus patch sewn onto its back) for $100 or so.

Benefit concerts are a great idea but are by nature a very regional thing
(and don't really generate THAT much cash), and a benefit recording would
take too long to generate any serious financial return. But it seems to me
that for a nominal start-up cost the label (or some caring friend of the
label who's willing to undertake this project) could have some of these
items made up fast and start generating some cash very quickly.

I'd appreciate it if somebody close to Estrus could forward this idea along
to them.

Hi Timothy
I love Mustang Sally by Zakary Thacks ,the song were also played
by Jaggaurs (Japanese GS).
About another car song , I love Cadilac.(Maybe two songs have same
title??)
My fave Cadilac is by Renegades(UK '60s) . Many Scandinavian bands
played the song.

Hitomi,

Did the Renegades do Cadillac as in "Brand New Cadillac"?
Correct me if I'm wrong. I actually do not think I've
ever heard their version of the song; I've only heard that
they do it.

I'm not sure what my favorite car song is. Would "Go Little
Honda" count? (it's a motorcycle, right?) Let's change the
rules of this thread to "favorite vehicle song" instead of
"favorite car song"; then I can also include The Ne'er Do
Wells' "Skybolt X-66". (hey, it's got wheels!!! ;))

I have another car song in my head, but whenever I get close
to recognizing it, it drives away!!! Gotta look through the
records tonight.

Thanks
Andrea

Roger Ebert wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and Up! (1976) and
Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens under pseudonyms. All three were
directed by Russ Meyer. I think he's been saying as of late that the fact
that the 3 were made is supposed to say something (a lot??) about
Hollywood.
