panky, a whole CD of hank Williams (Sr, not Bocephus) tunes. I've
worshipped hank since I 1st got an LP (24 Karat hits) back around '69,
but find matt's covers Brillint. It'll be a long time before you hear me

Hi Craig

Thanks for clearing that up. In Pulse magazine, there is an ad for
Fleetwood Mac video from Rhino. At the top it describes the new/old
Fleetwood compilation video "The Early Years," accompanied in this same
ad with the Iron Butterfly video with the names Peter Green and Mick
Fleetwood in the headline and copy for this video. It has to be more than
a misprint, perhaps some practical joke.

and don't know if they are still around, but when I was booking entertainment
a few years back I'd come across their name whenever I did anything in
Rochester.

Can't imagine that such a simple and obvious name as The Convertibles wouldn't
have been used by now, though. Maybe a check of some systems like MUSE will
turn something up, also check the rosters for BMI and ASCAP to see if anyone
files under that name. If the above draws a blank, you're probably safe in
trying to lock up the name.

There was a bit about this on "Unsolved Mysteries" a while back. I
don't remember the name of the particular Iron Butterfly member... he
wasn't in the In-a-Gadda/Ball line-up, but in any event, he lived in
California, and had become quite the computer guru in recent years, and
was at work (ironically) on a software application that could supposedly
identify missing persons from digitized crowd photographs (!). He
worked like 20 hours a day on it, and became increasingly erratic and
unbalanced, according to his girlfriend. Then one day he disappeared
after calling his friend, Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy, on a cellular
phone from his Suburban, mumbling "I've found the answer" or some such
quasi-mystical rambling. And that's the last anyone's heard from him.
I think I've got the facts pretty much straight here, but it's been a
few months since the "U.M." piece. Anyone else know anything about
this?

My advise to anyone who really has an emotional attachment to any of
their musical heroes: don't meet them if at all possible, you never know
what kind of personality you're going to get! My interview experience
with John Cale last year was a pleasant one, but it was clear that he
could be difficult very quickly if something rubbed him the wrong way.
Over the years I've been both lucky and unlucky when meeting some of my
"heroes" -- and yes, I do think that they should usually be "nice," just
like the rest of us, whether in a professional capacity (interviews,
gigs, etc) or at a chance personal meeting (parties, etc.)
Maybe I'll give some of my funny examples some other time, but
how about some anecdotes from other Bompers: what "brushes with
greatness" can you share? Good experiences? Jerks? "Heroes" to talk to or
steer clear of?

Subject: Holly Golightly/Fire Dept at the Wild Boston Room

The Wild Boston Room

Thurs 23 February

Fire Dept/Holly Golightly/Dodson's Dog

London, England. A city of ten million people, a major cultural
centre and home to several great garage bands. All the more
bewildering that last Thursday's show at the Wild Boston *only*
attracted twenty five paying customers. And for a bill which included

two Headcoats and a Headcoatee! Even the eleventh hour
cancellation of the Surf Creatures couldn't dent a evening which
included lots of promise. At least it puts the garage-rock scene into

perspective in the land of Ray Davies and the Queen Mum.

Dodson's Dog are probably a new name to many of you. However all
of the band are stalwarts of the Medway scene. Handling lead guitar
is ...er Dodson (The Discords), on bass is Johnny Barker (The Kravin'
A's) and Wolf Howard (The Primemovers) pounds the skins. As you
would expect this line-up produces a power-pop/garage sound with
lots of energy and smiles. Resplendent in what could be termed the
'Carnaby Street Mod Kipper-Tie Look', these guys played a set split
between covers and originals. Kicking off with 'Be A Caveman' and
then straight into the 'You Better Run' more or less set the tone for
the evening. At times Dodson's guitar playing was a bit unfocused,
particularly during 'Get Yourself Together', but tightened up during
'Can You See Me' from the first Experience album. On both counts
he got away with it admirably. 'Second To No-One, the first track on
the Discord's album closed their all too brief set. The band have no
recordings available, but what with their geographical location and
connections, expect something, someday with a 'Childish Production'
tag.

Talking of whom, the next band boasted a strong Headcoat presence.
Holly Golightly's gang included Bruce Brand and 'The Lost Soul'
(Lowdown Shakin' Chills), with Matt (Howling Wilf) on double bass
and Johnny Headcoat on occasional harmonica. So what is there to
say about the set? Well basically they blew me away! Holly's voice
has always reminded me of belonging to a very sultry and dangerous
woman. Add it to a musical unit reeking of lounge sleaze band
mixed with a Chess Records vibe and you have a crackerjack
combination. 'The Lost Soul' is one hell of a find for the scene in
London. He must be about twenty and plays some incredible
Mississippi blues licks, what's more he's a big fan of the Estrus
label. His solo sets taking a wild Pacific NW direction. What can
one say about Bruce Brand and Johnny Johnson except that Sir William
Childish is very fortunate to have them in his band. Both are
consummate musicians. Bruce in particular had a lot of room to
stretch out during this show. Fans of Fred Below would have loved
it. OK better keep the chat short. As you would imagine the band
delivered lots of slinky jazzy/blues/r'n'b material coupled with
Holly's "knowing" vocal style. Stand out tunes were 'It's All Over
Now' and the set closer 'Candy Man' (more superb Tub Johnson harp). A

perfect thirty minutes of music *and* they were playing together for
the first time too.

"I couldn't tell where the next chord was coming from..." quipped
Eddie Phillips after the Fire Dept' supported the Creation at the St
Johns Tavern in 1992. The ever sharp Neil Palmer quickly replied
"No and neither could I". Palmer and Robin Taylor are the sole
surviving members of this Brighton based group from that show.
Originally starting in the early nineties as a US influenced mid-
sixties garage band, the line-up now includes Johnny Headcoat (that
man again) helping the two original members. As you would
imagine from the quote, "old man" Palmer is a bit of a one-off. Most
of the his material now veers towards 'Chocolate Soup'/Freakbeat
territory but with more of a Syd Barrett influence than that of say
beer boys Mods flirting with psychedelia. At times the songs come
off as whimsical and fey - a nod towards the TV Personalities here -
but overall the effect is quite addictive. I'm really pleased these
guys are sticking with their musical vision. Despite Palmer's
precious manner, apparently he wanted to leave early because his cat
was sick, he still loves to turn up the Firebird and blast away. The
occasional intimate chat with the Selmer amp producing lots of
squealing feedback. No wonder Eddie Phillips was impressed. YEP!
Records released a Fire Dept. CD last year which accurately captures
the band. (Animal lovers please note : Palmer's girlfriend went home
to check the sick feline.)

Next week sees another blinding line-up at the Wild Boston Room.
Flyin' Brian of the Campus Tramps is bringing down his side projects
- - The Coyote Men and the Superfly TNT's. Both bands have new 45s
on Vendetta/Real Records and I particularly recommend the
'Primitive Urge' single by the Coyote Men. (The first 500 include a
green/mint flavoured condom - no that is not the reason why you
should but it.) Unfortunately instead of seeing the boys from
Newcastle who would like to be the Dictators; I shall be travelling to

Paris to check out the boys from NYC who wish to be the Animals.
Sometimes life is not fair. 8-)

BLAIR : I plan to run an interview with the Fleshtones before the
show at L'Arapaho. Teen Scene has first refusal. Let me know if you
are interested. Thanks.

     Here's two:

I played pinball with Johnny Winter around 1971. He seemed like a

I didn't exactly meet this one: Doug ("Louisiana Man") Kershaw came
into my college cafeteria to eat dinner before a show he was playing
at the gym. The whole place just stopped dead and stared, he was such
an imposing, *unusual* presence. All dressed in black, huge pompador,
deep set eyes. He wasn't a jerk, though, just ate and left. He put on
     a great show that night.

Speaking of Ray... I'm looking forward to yet another of his solo tours
early this Spring in the US. (He's also doing some shows in the UK in
March.) It's pretty much an April thing, but ends up in Princeton, NJ in
early/mid-May. This time out he's playing smaller cities/out of the way
places. For instance, there's no Manhattan date, but he *is* playing
somewhere in Flushing on May 2nd & 3rd. In addition to that Princeton gig
at the McCarter Theatre, he's playing out in Morristown, NJ on April 24th.
Also, there are shows in both Peekskill and Poughkeepsie, NY. If anyone
wants the tour dates, I've got 'em sitting around on my desktop somewhere.

Also... Dave's book, _Kink_ is finally coming out in the US. There's also
talk that he may tour with the Smithereens backing him. (Minus Pat
DiNizio.)
