Great finds!

I remember that Cyrkle/PR&R single well - at the time my father worked at a
Chevy dealership (the only year in his life he worked for someone else - good
timing Dad!!) and came home from the convention with the record and a Camaro
model. I know I saved the single; had I saved the model and other artifacts
from the era I wouldn't have to work today!

I also can't tell you how many times I have scanned over the band name The
Blue Up without getting the joke! Doh! Thanks for the mental prod!

Hey, that Best of 96 is Finished,

Camaro - The Cyrkle/SS 396 - Paul Revere and the Raiders - This was a
special promo, "Created Exclusively for Chevrolet Dealers". These would
both qualify for the cool car songs thread of a while back. Easily worth a
dollar!

My buddy Tim Lowe sends me a daily "This Day In History" page, and from
today's...

Well, this is MONDAY, the 3rd of February 1997

This is "The Day the Music Died"!
February 3, 1959 was a sad day in rock 'n' roll history: 22-year- old
Buddy Holly, 28-year-old J.P. Richardson ('The Big Bopper') and
17-year-old Ritchie Valens, died in an airplane crash near Mason City,
Iowa. February 3rd has been remembered as 'The Day the Music Died' since
Don McLean made the line popular in his 1972 hit, "American Pie".
Charles Hardin Holly was born in Lubbock, TX and recorded "That'll Be
the Day", "Peggy Sue", "Oh, Boy", "Maybe Baby", "It Doesn't Matter
Anymore" (recorded just before his death, a smash in the U.K., non
top-10 in the U.S.) and others. Buddy was inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Gary Busey offered a convincing portrait of
the singer in "The Buddy Holly Story" for TV.
J.P. (Jiles Perry) Richardson was from Sabine Pass, TX. He held the
record for longest continuous broadcasting as a DJ at KTRM Radio in
Beaumont, TX in 1956. He was on the air for 122 hours and eight minutes.
In addition to his smash hit, "Chantilly Lace", Richardson also penned
"Running Bear" (a hit for Johnny Preston) plus "White Lightning" (a hit
for country star, George Jones).
Richard Valenzuela lived in Pacoima, CA (near LA) and had a role in the
1959 film, "Go Johnny Go". Ritchie Valens' two big hits were "Donna" and
"La Bamba" ... the last, the title of a 1987 film depiction of his life.
"La Bamba" also represented the first fusion of Latin music and American
rock.
Of the three young stars who died in that plane crash, the loss of Buddy
Holly reverberated the loudest over the years. But, fans of '50s rock
'n' roll will agree, all three have been sorely missed.

label suffering like Estrus has, there's more important issues out there
in which people's lives are at stake. AIDS, homelessness, etc. all seem
more important to me than the resources lost in the fire. I'm not saying
that it's wrong for people to be helping out, but when you see how music
can bring people together to come to the aid of someone who needs it, ya'
gotta' wonder about the people who only want to help out when it's >>

Phil, nice to bring in a strong wiff of political correctness around here. I
guess we shouldn't feel too sorry for estrus since there is a problem with
the homeless, right? Maybe we shouldn't help estrus until ebonics are
fully instituted in our schools! Thats more important. thanks for the
insight.

Dang it, I forgot to alert y'all to the broadcast of "Go, Johnny, Go" on
AMC early Saturday the 1st. I forgot to tape it, too. Anyway it stars
Alan Freed and others and is said to be worthwhile, and, being on AMC,
will crop up regularly. xo Lola

At the Fleshtones L'Arapaho gig on Thrusday a friend handed me a flyer for
the Gonn reunion which took place in Paris earlier in the week. The blurb
on the back (en francais mais je l'ai comprenne un peu) explained that the
band were playing two sets one night in a small venue. Each perfomance had
an attendance limit of twenty five and tickets were by strict allocation.
Gosh it must have been a tiny room! Anyway my mate attended one of the sets
and said they were excellent. The flyer also mentioned the possibility of
the Gonn playing another Paris show in February but the organiser was still
looking for a venue. Anyway twit here left the flyer in the Hotel room
wastepaper bin and I can't remember the rest.

O yes those Fleshtones in Paris. Wow what a show. I tell ya those
Frenchies know how to react to this band. Zaremba and Co mixed old and new
and dug into the Blast Off! archives to dust off a spirited version of 'The
Way I Feel'. Highlight of the set for this Bompster was the encore
featuring brill' versions of 'The World Keeps Turning Round' (RD Davies) and
'You're Holdin' Me Down' (The Buzz - Joe Meek production). Quote of the
evening from the Z-man. Steve : "How would you feel if someone was too put
together a Fleshtones tribute?" Peter : "That would be nice, but do you
think we have enough good songs!" I tell ya those Super-Rock boys crack me
up sometimes.

Tell me the news concerning Kenny Pickett is *not* true. He was absolutely
fabulous at the Creation show I saw three years ago. Such dignity and
warmth. I shall make investigations on the London trash/garage scene.

I taped that Bernard Hermann special on BRAVO last night....haven't yet
seen it...but if it repeats this week, I just wanted to let you all know
that an occasional, passing glance at your TV guide of choice can be
valuable...
I also should have given more than a passing glance to the TV guide last
week, when I clipped the last 15 minutes of the MONKEES special on the
DISNEY CH. Anyone see it? My tape cuts off when they were getting into
HEAD...any valuable moments passed the scene where Peter Tork doesn't
want to smack a dame?
I got a TV Eye on u...

I've got a question regarding the recently re-released Bomp compilation "Ear
Piercing Punk", when did this first get released compared to the Pebbles and
the Highs in the Mid-6Ts compilations? And why were there no sleeve notes?

I always thought Gonn was one of the best garage/punk screamer bands
ever. I used to do a lot of the record shows in the Midwest, including
Peoria. Used to find some pretty cool stuff there. Even found a couple
of copies of the Kickapoo Creek Rock Festival poster there.

I met Craig and, sort of impressed by his part in the band, asked
about the two singles. He had several copies of each and proposed to
sell me a copy of each for a total of $150 (the first record is pretty
lame and he wanted $50, Blackout of Gretely is ... well ... Blackout
of Gretely, a monster! He wanted $100 for BOG), which was way over the
current value. But since they were new and unplayed, I said sure, why
not. I bought them and put them away.

Well, apparently Craig sold all of his copies, cause a year or two
later he approached me and told me that I should sell BOG back to him
for the original price, $100. Well, by now, he'd done such a good job
of spreading the legend that copies were going for $200-400. I said no
thanks, so he offered $125. I said I wasn't interested and he went
into a long tirade, in his own uniquely abusive way. I still wasn't
     interested.

I've seen him at various functions over the last few years and he's
coolly distant. However, friends who have come into his store and
mentioned my name to him have said that he hasn't forgotten me and
still calls me every name in the book. Well, I've still got the
     record, Craig!

Was in Iowa once around the same time period and met one of the guys
in the Daybreakers, who put out Psychedelic Siren, one of my psych
favorites. This guy, who I think is named Max Collins (?), was
involved in writing the Dick Tracy comic strip and was one of the
nicest guys I've met. I bought a copy of his record and got him to
autograph it. I was very happy about that outcome.

I still think BOG is a monster and Gonn was a hell of a band. But
sometimes the individuals fall far short of expectations.

     just my observations,

     David Tomlinson

This movie also features Eddie Cochran, the Cadillacs, the Flamingos,
Jackie Wilson, Harvey Fuqua, and the hardest _____ing man in show
