I think it came out just a hair before or at the same time as the Pebbles
10 or so. The original had a picture of an 80's era punk woman on a pink
cover and I had to talk myself into buying it, because I did not recognize
any of the names, but I did know that the "Ubangi Stomp" was an old song,
so I thought what the hey (Excuse the language).

The original package (a rather poor one) had no notes, either.

I believe it came out about 1980, after the Pebbles series has already
started. There were no sleeve notes because it wasn't that kind of a
record--it was aimed at fans of the new "punk rock" who might buy it by
mistake, expecting a lot of Anarchy in the Uk type stuff, and then get a
chance to hear some REAL punk music. In other words, a packaging gimmick on a
par with, say, "Freddy King Goes Surfing" (yes, this really exists).

I think it came out in '79 or '80. I don't know why it had no sleeve
notes. The re-release is, in my opinion, not the same thing. Not that
it isn't good, it's just that the rerelease cuts out half of the
original album! And some of my fave songs are on that half. The stuff
on the CD that replaces it is hard to find on other comps., though, so
I guess you need both. I think the cover is one of the all-time best
covers because it looks so "un-'60s" and I always thought about all
these punks being duped into buying it, thinking it was a current '70s
comp. to find all these crazed, rare, not oft heard '60s punk gems -
like me! That record set me on the "road to ruin" of loving '60s punk.
I got it around the same time I got my first "Pebbles" (Vol. 9).

I always thought Gonn was one of the best garage/punk screamer bands
ever. I used to do a lot of the record shows in the Midwest, including
Peoria. Used to find some pretty cool stuff there. Even found a couple
of copies of the Kickapoo Creek Rock Festival poster there.
I met Craig and, sort of impressed by his part in the band, asked
about the two singles. He had several copies of each and proposed to
sell me a copy of each for a total of $150 (the first record is pretty
lame and he wanted $50, Blackout of Gretely is ... well ... Blackout
of Gretely, a monster! He wanted $100 for BOG), which was way over the
current value. But since they were new and unplayed, I said sure, why
not. I bought them and put them away.
Well, apparently Craig sold all of his copies, cause a year or two
later he approached me and told me that I should sell BOG back to him
for the original price, $100. Well, by now, he'd done such a good job
of spreading the legend that copies were going for $200-400. I said no
thanks, so he offered $125. I said I wasn't interested and he went
into a long tirade, in his own uniquely abusive way. I still wasn't
interested.
>
Weird! I interviewed Craig a few years ago for my 'zine and he was
really cool. He also sent copies of the "Blackout" repress, his solo
records (which, I admit, I didn't dig too much) and various historical
things. He was real nice to me, and very flattered and appreciative of
the article in what was then a small, not-that-well-distributed
fanzine. On the other hand, when we interviewed Buck Ormsby of the
Wailers, we heard he was a real jerk, an asshole, etc. who always wants
too much money for Wailers stuff. We found him pretty jovial for the
most part, and he was pretty nice to us, but when the article came out,
he called about two months later and bitched about it over the phone,
saying it "made him look stupid." I don't know why he thought that,
since we cleaned up his awful grammer, and took out a few nasty digs he
made at ex-members that we thought he might regret after it was
printed. So, some time later, the Wailers played a reunion show (well,
three original members) and I brought a bunch of mags with me (they
were on the cover). I gave one to Kent Morrill and he said Buck hadn't
even told him about the piece! Buck didn't even talk to me that night,
and I thought they were lousy anyway (although Kent's voice was
excellent, the band had literally no energy and played a lot of bad
'60s "oldies" instead of Wailers songs!). Oh, well...

Maybe you didn't notice that those "fave songs" are otherwise available in
more legitimate editions, which didn't exist when the original vinyl
compilation came out.

Hey,

Does anyone have the update on this tour? The last one I saw have a "TBA" for
Boston on Thursday, 2/13. I would like to know if they ever got a show here.

Is there a website for 360 Twist! records? That may help.

It was just posted today on the banana-truffle. No Boston gig. I'm not going
to type in the whole thing, but it looks like yer best bet is Rochester on
the 15th or NY on the 16th. I'll be at the Rochester gig. Love that Bug
Jar!!

Hey Laura,

When are you two-bit losers gonna get north of Florida and assault Atlanta
with your sewer music?

Brian Phillips and I should be comparing Immediates songs soon. I'll let
you know whose is better, if you know what I mean.

Tell Ed I said Hello.

Subject: Estrus fire vs. homelessness, AIDS

While I agree that maybe the Estrus warehouse fire may not be as
"important" as the problems of homelessness and AIDS, it is still a
tragic event for anyone who is a fan of the label.

The issues of homelessness and AIDS are very complicated, and their
eradication involves the efforts of the local, state and federal
governments. While each of us can volunteer once or twice a month at a
local shelter or hospice (or make monetary contributions),
unfortunately, there is very little one person can do to alleviate
these problems. However, as a group we can help Dave by attending the
scheduled benefits, or by just giving him moral support. I think the
old saying that "charity begins at home" applies to this situation.
Many people have given Dave a lot of positive support, and who can turn
their back on a friend when he needs it? Finally, I don't think it
should be considered "politically correct" to address these serious
problems.
Respectfully,
Lisa

hey,

why not go to or organize a benefit for estrus _and_ another one for
homelessness or whatever. there's no rule that you have to stop at one
benefit.

just a thought,

Hey, I missed the first part of this thread. I just paid $15 for a mint copy
with the picture sleeve which I had never seen before. I still have another
copy of the record (in a plain white sleeve) which I would trade for another
original 60s garage 45. E-mail me privately.

I have to back Alan on this as well! I wrote Craig a huge letter a couple of
years back raving about Gonn. I sent him a copy of our current record at the
time and told him I was bummed I had missed the re-issue of the Gonn 45 with
the cleaned up better fidelity version of Doin' Me In. He wrote me back I
nice note and sent me a copy of the 45. The man is a king in my book. Also
pick up the new Gonn CD re-issue it's got bonus tracks!
