if, by opus you mean, like, uh, ssshh, concept album, then i guess

Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow
Alice Through The Looking Glass - S/T (too expensive for me to have heard
tho')

if not,

Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream
Open Mind - S/T

i didn't get this original message so maybe i'm confused, but am i =
missing something here? did some idiot really say that s&j can't play? =
talk about ignorant--does this person really think that santo & johnny =
were just another run of the mill "exotica" band?! the first 2 santo & =
johnny records are unbelievable. "Teardrop" is quite possibly the most =
beautiful song ever-the heavy reverb on the pedal steel is perfect. and =
to say they "covered" sleep walk??? hello??? it was a huge hit for them =
(as far as i know they wrote it) and has never been done justice on =
record since (ever heard stray cats version? pukerama!).

while i like Friends of D. Martinez, they are a far cry from santo & =
Johnny. the songs, the creative arrangements, the playing, the tones on =
S&Js records could never be matched.

waiting for the box set...

- --------------------
I haven't seen any mention of Santo and Johnny, a couple of Italian boys =
from Queens, NY (or Brooklyn?), who recorded in the late 50s. They cover =
all the usual exotic standards -- Caravan, Sleep Walk, Canadian Sunset, =
Hawaiian War Chant -- but the twist is that one of them plays a Hawaiian =
slide guitar, or perhaps it's a pedal steel. (All I have is a cassette =
taped by a friend.) Whoever it is playing the thing is just terrible. =
Their version of Hawaiian War Chant is hilarious -- they can't play the =
16th notes so they just sort of slur it and fake it.

I know they're BIG influences in FRIENDS OF DEAN MARTINEZ...

Hi All,

If were talking psych-pop, we could include the Kaleidoscope
LPs "Tangerine Dream" and "Faintly Blowing" and if we can add non-UK
LPs we should definitely throw in The Smoke LP on Sidewalk and the
West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band's fourth LP, "A Child's Guide to
Good and Evil," Lazy Smoke's "Corridor of Faces" and possibly the
Appletree Theatre, Chrysalis, Wichita Fall, "Miss Butters" by the
Family Tree and the Art of Lovin' LP. Forever Amber's "The Love
Cycle" is OK (and UK, I think). The Attack should be mentioned too.
The Hollies LP "Butterfly" qualifies in my book, definitely. If
anyone's interested in 60's psych-pop, I'd love to swap tapes.

Keith.

'allo, everybody.

Just dropping in to announce the new issue of Cosmik Debris, which is now
online at www.cosmik.com/cosmikdebris.

In this issue, you will find an interview with Bernard Yin, fellow
Cowabungan and leader of Brazil 2001. There are also 4 sound clips
accompanying the interview. Don't forget to enter your name for the
drawing. We'll be giving away five copies of Brazil 2001's CD, Fist Full
Of Sand.

Waaaaaaay at the other end of the spectrum, we're honored to have an
interview with classical composer David Diamond. At 81, his memory is
sharp as a tack, and he shares stories about his friends E.E. Cummings,
Aaron Copland, Maurice Ravel, and others. Fascinating reading.

The pickings were slim this month as far as surf releases go, so the only
surf review is the compilation called "The Missing Chord," which features
The Mel-Tones, Dead Man's Curve, and a few other Cowabunga bands.

And, of course, we have Phil Dirt's column! Plus interviews with Canadian
punk archivist Jan Haust, and Bob Smith of The Ken Ardley Playboys. Stop
on by. That's about it. Thanks!

Deej

for some unknown reason after joe emery wrote "it was a huge hit for them
(as far as i know they wrote it) and has never been done justice on record
since", i felt compelled to search the net for the origins of "sleep walk".
i finally found a page <http://www.orca.bc.ca/pub/rwilson/V1960.htm> that
lists the composers of the tune heard on the ventures' "walk don't run"
reckerd as "S. Farina-J. Farina-A. Farina". would this be the same tune?
(i'm humbled to admit i don't know) and would "S" & "J" Farina be Santo &
Johnny? with "A" maybe being another family member?

who knows the answers to these questions that lurk in the hearts of men (&
women)?

shadow, you out there?

Yes, Santo and Johnny are the Farina boys - I THOUGHT they wrote this
gorgeous piece of music and I THANK Joe Emery for righteously coming to
their defense. I was astonished by the putdown. Maybe A. Farina's their
dad. xo - Lola

I thought S&J ORIGINATED "Sleepwalk" rather than covered it - am I wrong?

Hi kids,

Does anyone have any information regarding The Banana Splits? I'm trying
to find out who the writers, session musicians, producers, songwiters,
actors, discography, etc. were. Any information regarding the recording
studio (and it's equipment) would also be appreciated.

I stumbled across this link while browsing through the Art Bell webpage.
It's the Unsolved Mysteries page, with a section devoted to finding the
whereabouts of Taylor Kramer.

No one (that I've received to date) has mentioned various Kinks albums - I
thought that "Arthur" was acknowledged as the first "concept album." "Face
to Face" and "Something Else" were its predecessors, and are worthy of
mention, though not pure concept LPs.

I also apologize to the list for broadcasting personal mail - I didn't think
to check the address before responding to what was personal mail to me.

Try doing a search on Sid & Marty Kroft. I'm pretty sure they were the
loonies behind the Splits.
