Does anyone remember a 3-girl singing group from the '60s called THE CAKE? A
friend of mine has a clip of them performing (lip-synching) on The Smothers
Brothers, 'cept one of them is apparently so out of it (or overwhelmed) she
forgets to lip-synche! Some of their "stage moves" were pretty funny, too.

Umm, looks like this was mostly covered in the last few digests... but=20
I already got is set in my mind, so...

Sid and Marty Krofft got their big start in the 1962 Worlds Fair in=20
Seattle doing a Can-Can puppet routine called Les Poupee des Paree or=20
some other franc-ism. They designed the McDonaldland characters, but=20
apparently McDonalds thought they could imitate them, slightly=20
changing some parts, and get away with using them, but the Kroffts=20
sued. Don't ask me how they were changed, if at all, because Big Mac=20
and Mayor MacCheese are dead ringers for Pufnstuf, and how could=20
Ronald have looked different than a clown decorated in mustard and=20
ketchup colors?

This was much more than a banana splits look-a-like (when essentially=20
Big Bird and other early muppets are a similar sort of puppet and no=20
suit is possible there), it was the exact same style. The Kroffts=20
worked with Hanna Barbera, designing the Banana Splits costume=20
puppets, etc. Can't tell you if they did any failed concepts for H-B=20
beyond that, though... Then they formed their own company to do H.R.=20
Pufnstuf, Far Out Space Nuts, etc. Often times, actors from Beyond=20
the Valley of the Dolls show up on their series. Mike Blodget (Lance=20
Rock) making a special appearance on Electrawoman and Dynagirl. Also,=20
Tim Carey (sp?), World's Greatest Sinner, Zappa prot=E9g=E9 and Saturday =

Morning standard made several appearances...
the rest, including their short-lived show Anson and Laurie (starring=20
Potsy from Happy Days) is history.

Greg hipped me to the Hanna Barbera records story 2 or 3 years ago-=20
they released many garagey/ punk singles in the 60s, the finest record=20
from a cartoon band point of view would definitely be the Banana=20
Splits, but the Jetsons First Family on the Moon contains some great=20
pop tunes on the order of the Buckinghams, etc.

Hey Alan,

The Smoke (US) were a west coast studio only (I think) band
that Mike LLoyd wrote and arranged the songs for. It's absolutely
gorgeous.

Uh, two things...

One, I realise I was a bit late with my last post, and that the
question had been answered, sorry!

And two, Sundazed is indeed reissuing the U.S. Smoke LP sometime this
year, no definite date. They are also officially releasing the Fi Fo
LP of demos by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. This is
fantastic garage folk, very rocking with some stormin' covers of the
Kinks, Bob Dylan and the Left Banke. Plus a very Byrdsy early
version of "I Won't Hurt You." I'm very excited.

"brought them up to speed," so to speak. And really, it was fun to see it
all again anyway. But I do wish somebody would actually dig a bit. I
gave Justus a good review in Cosmik, but I'm aware I MAY have liked it
because I'm sentimental about The Monkees.

I had the same reaction to the new album. I grew up with the "pre-fab
four" and remember cutting their records out of cereal boxes to play on
my little phonograph! But the Monkees did make some great records,
both with and without Don Kirshner. I actually prefer the ones they did
after they booted him, such as Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.
The new one, Justus, was a very cool thing to happen (as they did
*everything* on the album), but it's not a *great* album. Still, I'd say it's an
effort they should be proud of. The playing and production (by Mike
Nesmith) are both very impressive and the songwriting is "decent."

I wish the Disney documentary had gone into more depth after they made
the movie "Head" but given the target audience, it was a good show.

Actually, it won#t be a documentary. Instead, it#s gonna be a brand new,
contemporary #episode# of The Monkees TV show, which should be
more than a little interesting. There's a full description of the show at
www.abctelevision.com, but the good news is it will be on right before
the American Comedy Awards (or something like that), it was written
and directed by Nesmith, and will include a few new songs.

Be seeing you,

Yes....I remember the clip from a few years ago, when one of the cable
channels were airing the Smothers Brothers show with a degree of reqularity.
As soon as I saw the clip I began rootin' around for any info on The
Cake....but nothing, nada, nope. If I recall, they had matching outfits on,
just like the infamous Shags. Could it be.....

Imagine that, they came up with a song called "Circle Sky". I hope the
Monkees don't find out.

Decca? Anyway, "Baby That's Me" was one of the best girl group

PER MINUTE CHARGES FOR INTERNET SERVICE!

Hi All: I have just been forwarded this message from work via a Comp
USA
salesperson and I thought everyone should know this information:

A very important matter currently under review by the FCC. Local
telephone companies have filed a proposal with the FCC to impose
per
minute charges for your internet service. They contend that your
usage has or will hinder the operation of the telephone network.
It
is the belief that internet usage will diminish if users were
required
to pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an
e-mail
box for your comments, responses must be received by February 13,
     1997. Send your comments to:

isp@fcc.gov

and tell them what you
think. Every phone company is in on this one, and they are trying
to
sneak it in just under the wire for litigation. Let everyone you
know
hear this one. Get the e-mail address of everyone you can think of.
Please forward this e-mail to all your friends on the internet so
