Mine comes in on Wednesday: can't wait. Tonight's spending adventure
involves a Porcelain Bus lp being held for me; I don't know what they
sound like yet, but given the name and my understanding that much of
their stuff was produced by Rob Younger, should be worth the $.

I've got a pretty good quality audience tape of a Lyres show in
Bethlehem, PA from the "On Fyre" lineup (11/85). Features Billy Miller
joining them for "Money." If anyone's interested in a trade, e-mail me.

I thought the Monkees special was kinda kool, but not a great work of art.
Mr. Nesmith's personality showed through in the many tongue-in-cheek
references to the band and its image, and they worked *most* of the
time. But some of the jokes were a little tiresome. I'm looking forward to
seeing what they put into the full-length movie that they're starting to
make. And I'm hoping the summer tour with nez will include more of their
good songs that were not Top 40 hits (i.e., Door Into Summer, etc.)

Be seeing you,
Bill

Coupla things:

My net bomp collection is the Zeros' single : Wild Weekend (p/s) and the 1977 mag. ish. w/Johnny
Rotten on the cover. Having said that, I wanted to say that I saw the Zeros in a TINY
little room in Portland in Aug. or early Sept. of 1978 downstairs from Neighbors of Woodcrafters
when it was on 14th and Morrison, and let me tell you that it was one of the most memorable
live shows of my life. Two hours of absolute, pure garage punk fun. Fun, not violence.
People were bouncing around, but they were doing it together. I dunno, it seemed a lot
more friendly back then, etc. etc. I swear that sweat was coming off of the walls. I
recall them being a three piece back then. I'll double check. The guitar player (are these
guys related to the Escovedos of Shiela E. and Stank and Pile - I mean Rank and File fame?)
played a white SG. Very cool.
I saw them again in early 1980 at the Whiskey, but it somehow wasn't the same.

Onto requests for info: I have tapes of, but no info on, the following bands: Meshmikan
(And As Years go By), Bubblepuppy (Hot Smoke and Sassafrass) (would you believe that I actually
heard a cover of this damned thing?!!), and The Flame (the Fataar Bros. from the Middle East!)
"See the Light" (name the side of the White Album this came from and you pass go and collect
$200!). Any info, etc.?

On a related note, back in the late Sixties/Early Seventies, I lived in Tripoli, Libya.
Back then there was a teen club located near/on the beach on the Mediterranean. We used
to have dances there. The house band was an Arab rock band called Brain Damage. They
were known to have passable renditions of Inna Gadda Davida and Smoke on the Water.
How and from whom they learned to play/acquired instruments and P.A. is a a matter of
myth and lore, but.... Where are they now?!

covering the great mission of burma (another great boston band) song "that's
when i reach for my revolver," but for some reason is singing "that's when
i realize it's over" during the chorus instead of the obvious chorus. will
someone please reach for their revolver and this moron out of his misery!

British radio wouldn't let a song with a message that could be construed
as pro-gun on so Moby (who was in the CTHC band Vatican Commandos, btw)
recorded an alternate lyric version. I guess MTV is playing this one as
well.

LPs that came out on "Pryct" Records in 1987 and 1989, "Live At
Cantones" and "Live 1983: Let's Have A Party!" The Cd appears to
contain all of the "Party" LP, plus most of "Catones," minus "Don't
Give It Up Now," "Louie Louie" and "She Pays The Rent." Haven't heard
the CD, but the records are great.

Hiya, (cyber)Space Persons...
I am happy to report to you that Prof. Manfred Jones, who let his
backbone slip last month, shook it HARD Friday night in Orlando,
Florida. Yup, the Woggles remain one of the BEST GARAGE BANDS in
America. Manfred was all barbe-qued and raved-up....They did a lot of
the songs off THE ZONTAR SESSIONS...plus, my fave, JEZEBEL...during
which I got to hold Manfred's torso. Orlando's almightly Hate Bombs
were there, and although they did not open, they still managed to get on
stage with the Woggles, and for a version of , gosh, now I"ve forgotten
which Who song, I think it was "Can't Explain."
As for the Subsonics(another Georgia band), I just got a copy of their
recent album on GET HIP(help me, Mark Reed, with the title.) If you
liked GOOD VIOLENCE, then this is better, fuller, fatter, and WEIRDER!
Clay Reed's voice and his,uh, Lou Reed guitar, zound terrific. If you
like Buddy Holly, The Velvet Underground, Richard Hell or Television,
then the Subsonics are the band fer u!
p-s: Andrea , Tony, and Esquerlita, write me for more details.

Subject: new Garage Nation column

Hey,

Just a note to let ya know that my new full-page column for Magnet
Magazine, called "Garage Nation" is in the new issue that just hit the
newstands. If you haven't seen Magnet before, it's a pretty cool national
magazine that covers underground music of all kinds, and now a page of
garage & psych noise! Does anyone know of other national zines that have
a regular garage/psych page? I'm interested in taking a look at them...

Anyway, the first installment features 1313 Mockingbird Lane, The Novas,
Crusaders, Les Godzillas, etc. Next month it's The Monks! Yeah! (The
mixture of coverage is about 80% new stuff, 20% re-issues...)

Any interested band or label is invited to send along anything you'd like
me to review or discuss. Stay cool!
