the zeros featured javier escovedo, whose brother alejandro was in rank =

zeros went on to become the one and only el vez, the mexican elvis (!) =
By the way, if you haven't seen el vez play live, check him out, he puts =
on a really great vegas-style show.

re: moby
why even bother to cover a song like that if you have to (or are willing =

some other great songs and make them suck too. (instead of "let's have a =

My net bomp collection is the Zeros' single : Wild Weekend (p/s) and the =
1977 mag. ish. w/Johnny

Zeros in a TINY
little room in Portland in Aug. or early Sept. of 1978 downstairs from =
Neighbors of Woodcrafters
when it was on 14th and Morrison, and let me tell you that it was one of =
the most memorable
live shows of my life. Two hours of absolute, pure garage punk fun. =
Fun, not violence.
People were bouncing around, but they were doing it together. I dunno, =
it seemed a lot
more friendly back then, etc. etc. I swear that sweat was coming off of =
the walls. I
recall them being a three piece back then. I'll double check. The guitar =
player (are these
guys related to the Escovedos of Shiela E. and Stank and Pile - I mean =
Rank and File fame?)
played a white SG. Very cool.
I saw them again in early 1980 at the Whiskey, but it somehow wasn't the =
same.

British radio wouldn't let a song with a message that could be construed
as pro-gun on so Moby (who was in the CTHC band Vatican Commandos, btw)
recorded an alternate lyric version. I guess MTV is playing this one as
well.

Someone posted something about the Zontar Sessions the other day and I
have accidentally deleted it. If anyone has this, could they please
repost. I found a copy of the lp & just wanted to check out the
opinions of others.

Thanks,

Questions about the Lyres double lp A Promise is a Promise:

1. Is it available on CD in the same format as the lp (with the live
cuts)?

2. Is it a must have (solicitation of opinions, of course)?

Thanks again,

Frank

El Vez is definitely el rey. PBS or some such station aired a very
entertaining hour on all things elvisian a month or so back. One of the
MANY edifying segments was El Vez giving the viewer a tour of all his
"E" regalia. Very cool. As was his redo of In the Ghetto (Elvis really
did this song, didn't he? Always on belly full of fluffernutters, I'll
wager.)

Yes, I have just the El Vez segment on tape from about 4 years ago. His redo
of In the Ghetto is called "In El Barrio". I first discovered El Vez by
flipping through a book called, "I Am Elvis", and saying "Wow! A Mexican
Elvis! And he's dreamy to boot!" and hunted down some records.

El Vez was also in Catholic Discipline. Rent "The Decline of Western
Civilization" and you will see him. He was very young!

Whether it's still available in the CD format, I don't know. I got mine new
in '88.
>2. While it's not the best Lyres album in the world, I'd definitely still
put it in the "must have" category. I've always thought there wasn't enough
organ on this record. I had a hard time adjusting to the Jack Hickey guitar
sound, too. But, I still dig it. Even Tim Warren says in the liner notes
of the Early Years, "Monoman is by no means a saint and yeah, Mono DID pull
down some weak shows/recs inna haze o' booze/drug-addled sloth in the latter
80's..." Whether he's referring to this record, I don't know, but I still
say you should pick it up. There's a few people I know who think it's one
of the BEST Lyres albums. For what it's worth, I particularly like "Touch"
with Wally Tax on vocals. There's my 2 cents.

I don't know the vinyl lp, but there is a New Rose CD (ROSE153).

1-12 recorded january '88 NY
13-15 Live holland VPRO
16-21 Live Rennes France
Total time : 70:00

> 2. Is it a must have (solicitation of opinions, of course)?
On Fyre is may be superior, but i know lot of bands ready to kill for
issuing records like "Promise".
Live sound is 'live in studio" for the 13-15. 16-21 comes
with saturation on 16, but the rest is fine.

Rob produced their 1rst single and Brett Myers (died pretty) produced
the rest. BTW i hope you liked the Porcelain Bus piece. This band
had an incredible swing. They are about getting together again (3 pal
on 4) and in the middle of writing songs. But they will change their
name and they have a keyboard now.

Cheers.

I think the post yer asking about was actually a review of a recent live gig
where they played quite a bit from the LP. The Zontar Sessions is a comp of
their 7"s on Zontar, all long outta print. With the exception of their
upcoming LP on Telstar, it's yer best bet. I don't personally care for the
other Estrus LP. I love the songs, but I think the production is too heavy
handed (dig?). The Telstar LP is, on the otherhand, an out and out winner.
Dig the cut 'Arthur Lee'!! Anyway, I'm getting ahead of the game, as it's
not even released yet!

the zontar sessions is plenty of fun. better than teenage dance party and
still not a match to their live mania it is well worth the dough for the lp.

Howdy all. I have been on this list a short time now, and it seems quite a
good list :) Sorry I can't imput more into the conversations!
I am desperately trying to find out if a band "Intoxica" are still
together, they are describaed as aussiebilly/psychobilly/rockabilly. I know
thats a big generalisation, but as I know so little about them, they could
easily be classed as either. (Tho aussiebilly is not really a music style).
 Any info would be appreciated.
 Thanks in advance,
Marns.

When did Hillbilly Frankenstein start recording again? I figured that
they were still busy with the Guadalcanal Diary reunion.

El Vez claims to be the love child of Elvis and Charro! I really
enjoyed his shows here in Tucson, where he was well recieved and kicked
off his last couple US tours. As with most performance art/novelty
acts, there are a lot of gags, jokes and surprises that are good only
once. His El-Vettes are beautiful, their costume changes campy and
clever. At his more recent shows, he has gotten more political (I
think it had something to do with Prop 187 in CA). The Tucson fans were
apathetic to his urges to action. They wanted Elvis! With a big smile
on his face, my friend at the show gave the following one line review:
"It's the kinda thing you wouldn't want to miss once, but probably
wouldn't see twice."
