El Vez's shows (at least post 1995) are Very political and Very
intellectual (any other rockabilly performer write about latina artist
Frida Kahlo?) which for my money make the shows even more interesting
and even hard to comprehend (like the Mexican political myth/ story of
the hand of Obregon, etc). All packaged in a bizarre all-singing
all-dancing Vegas Revue.

The band, however, peppers the set with more musical in-jokes than
Paul Schaeffer (when a masked wrestler comes out in all white the
guitarist plays a few bars from "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear
White")...

I think it's amazing, but it definitely deconstructs Elvis to El's
molecules then reassembles them.

If you can hunt down a copy, get CALL OF THE WILD, which is a magazine Manfred
put out about 4-5 years ago. I think it was the only issue he did.
Interviews/articles on SCOTS, Man or Astroman?, Hillbilly Frankenstein, The
Troggs, the LaBrea Stompers, lots of artwork by Jim Stacy, and road tripping
food reviews! It is the true Southern-fried-rock-n-roll experience, complete
with flexi-disk! There may be some copies still at the Woggles home based
(somewhere on Mieggs [sp?] street in Athens, GA).

There is no Woggles experience that can compare to seeing them live! I think
I've seen 'em in Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado and New York, and I've
never been disappointed. Next is to get 'em to play my home state...

Hey All,

I finally got around to picking up "The Ballad of Ric Menck" on
Summershine, and I've gotta say, if you're a fan of really catchy,
sweet and jangly power pop, you cannot go wrong. This record
compiles seven inch singles Ric and his partner in song Paul Chastain
have been releasing on tiny labels for the last eight years or so, as
the bands Choo Choo Train and the Springfields. If they wear their
influences on their sleeves, at least they're terrific ones: Big
Star, Let's Active, early Primal Scream, the Hollies (they cover
"Clown"), and the woefully obscure but incredible Clouds (from
Glasgow, not the Australian Clouds). I strongly urge anyone who
wants instant summertime in their own living rooms to rush out and
get this. The drum sounds are remarkable, and the guitar hooks are
giant. I've been humming the hook to "This Perfect Day" all morning.
Ric's main band, Velvet Crush, will have a new LP this summer, with
Mitch Easter behind the board again. Can't wait. It reminds me of
being in Providence in the summer, outside the old Living Room,
drinking with the punks while Velvet Crush and Galaxie 500 played
inside. Wonderful.

Worth having but make sure you purchase 'On Fyre' and 'Let's Have A Party'
first. J.C. definitely plays less organ and there is a shift away from
American garage to UK Freakbeat/Euro Beat. Great covers of 'She's Got Eyes'
(with an uncredited Keith Streng on backing vocals) and 'Jagged Time Lapse'.
There are a couple of interesting originals. 'On Fyre' rips-off 'My Flash
On You' (but it's a good steal) and 'Feel Good' has an aching melody but the
song fails to develop fully. Never mind. Someone mentioned having problems
adjusting to Jack Hickey's guitar, personally I was never a fan of John
Bernadino's drumming, far too metronomic for this fan. Try and get hold of
the CD copy of 'Promise' as the three tracks from Dutch radio are
outstanding and will make you laugh and cry. Phew... soulful stuff. The
'live' material from Rennes is more chaotic and alcohol influenced. In
other words JC's lewd sense of humour grates after repeated listens.
Despite it's highs and lows I still play this one a lot, much to the chagrin
of my girlfriend.

Finally, a little dickie bird tells me that the Lyres are now playing 'You
Told Me Lies' in their set. Apparently it was originally recorded by an
obscure Rochester combo in 1966. I wonder if JC has an original copy of
this long forgotten garage-rock gem. <g>

The fluffernutter is based around this stuff called Fluff, a white, sticky,
sweet concoction with the consistency of roofing tar. It is made locally
(Lynn, MA) by a family owned company and accordingly to sources, they make a
helluva lot of the stuff.

Getting the stuff onto bread is like trying to spread cat litter on
