Are you kidding? The swingin' neckbreakers are one of the best bands
around.Live they sound great, while The makers have a murky, muddy mix.
Makers are more on attitude, less on the music...it depends on what you care
about...music or attitude. The Neckbreakers play songs...The makers play
riffs...they don't really write songs but rather good riffs...but then again,
so do a lot of the new bands.
I forgot to mention that the band recently played Coney Island High
at St. Marks Place ,NYC. They set consisted of almost all new songs & covers,
with just a few familiar songs from the past. But damn if the band didn't
sound great, play like a machine, and just pull the whole thing off with all
the new songs.
They still haven't lost a step, and are one of the best around.
(The manic covers of Love's "Can't Explain" and Rock Garden's "Super
Stuff"-on Pebbles 13- were two of my fave covers of a set that included many
strong originals.) They are now recording a new album, so look out for it and
then a U.S. tour.
Don't miss the great garage show at The Mercury Lounge this month
with Neckbreakers/Insomniacs and maybe others.

the makers are fun live...i found it very funny that they use shitty, old
amps that result in them not bein very loud at all. we stood right in front
of the stage and could still talk without the band blastin us out. now that
is authentic 1965 stuff...todd

Bad vibrations: Beach Boys' libel case is on

WASHINGTON -- Brian Wilson will have to face the music in a
New Hampshire courtroom because the U.S. Supreme Court
refused to throw out a libel suit concerning his 1991 book about the
Beach Boys. The court Monday, without comment, refused to hear
arguments by Wilson and co-author Todd Gold that it is unfair to
force the Californians to defend themselves against a libel charge
filed in New Hampshire. Wilson's former bandmate Al Jardine and
Brother Records Inc. alleged in a libel suit that the book "Wouldn't
It Be Nice" contains numerous false statements about the Beach
Boys and Wilson's contributions to the band. Jardine and Brother
Records filed the suit in New Hampshire after missing a filing
deadline in California. In his appeal to the nation's highest court,
Wilson argued that he has almost no connection to New Hampshire
and should not have to defend himself there. (Brooks Boliek)

A couple of years ago, a bunch of skinheads showed up at a gig the
Makers were just hanging out at, and they started trouble with the
boys, and basically they got their asses kicked. The bassist is
especially one mean motherfucker when he wants to be. They may be
small, but they knows how to use their collective weight.

Yeah, we're doing a Mo Tucker thing in the next Do The Pop, so a show
review would be cool.

Speaking of which (as will defer what I'm paid for for a moment more),
found at shabby thrift shop yesterday:

mouldering (coverwise) but excellent playing condition - 2 PR/Raiders
lps (missing the color photo booklet, helas); 3 Herman's Hermits lps
(hate 'em, but at .50 a shot, I'll hand them off to someone who cares);
and some drippy sweet cheez by Desi, Dino and Billy - who went on to
become GG's Holy Men, right?: .50 each lp

Pretty Things: The Vintage Years; Plan 9: Frustration: $1 each as one
was a dbl lp, the other "modern."
