I guess you're right. I got so caught up having fun with my friends that I
stopped noticing the assholes. Was the guy who slammed into your girlfriend
the stage-licker? That's the name John Hentch's girlfriend gave him. He was
really drunk the first night (probably all three nights) and she swears he
licked the stage! I think we both gave him a hard shove at one point 'cuz he
kept slamming into us and "accidentally" touching our butts. (At which point
the Hatebombs, being the gentlemen they are, offered to take care of him for
me.) I don't recall any scuffles -- I would've liked to have seen that
eye-gouge!

Speaking of scuffles, I nearly got into one at the recent Lyres show with some
drunk FOOL who was making out with her boyfriend (complete with tongues and
ass-grabbing) and spilled RED WINE all over my hot-pink vintage-60's wool
coat! Thanks to Chris Horne's advice, I was able to get rid of the stains!
(*Thanks again, Chris!*) I really saw red (literally!) over this. I didn't
get violent, but yelled at her to calm the heck down, put down her glass, get
a damn room!

Moral of the story: Don't fuck with my pink coat!!!!!

Subject: Toby Marriott's band

As the original author of the news item which Brian Proust quoted here
yesterday (though you wouldn't know it from the way my name was misspelled),
I thought I'd post the longer version from elsewhere in the newspaper. This
guy Kevin Jennings who's mentioned in the first line is the former manager
of the Black Crowes; he sued the Crowes last year for a piece of the action
on their first album, based on an old handwritten contract scrawled on a
piece of stationery (which was widely mistaken for a "cocktail napkin").
Kevin currently manages a beat group, the Lizardmen. He tells me that Toby
Marriott leads the SuperNaturals [note internal capitalization] and plays
guitar, but doesn't sing. The group's singer is a Georgia country boy who
could never be mistaken for Steve Marriott's son.

Here's the item:

From CREATIVE LOAFING Atlanta's LOCAL RELEASES column for
 week ending 03-08-97

Kevin Jennings recently supervised a recording project for
the SuperNaturals, a new band led by Toby Marriott,
the son of legendary English rocker Steve Marriott.
Jennings describes the new group's sound as "young, dark, angry
and extremely melodic." The Carrollton-based band performs at
Dottie's on March 8 with the Lizardmen. There's no word yet
on whether the Supernaturals and Jennings have signed any
cocktail napkins, but they've "definitely bonded." -- Gregory Nicoll

I think SCOTS have been around since about '84 or so, hailing from the Chapel
Hill, NC area. I have a self-titled LP they released in '86 that has a
different lineup (the bass player was not in the band then; I'm not sure if
the drummer was). I think that "Santo Swings" is fairly recent. I have a
"Santo Sings" ep from '92 or '93, the "For Lovers Only" LP (on cassette!), and
they had a release in '95 (?) called "Dirt Track Date" (which I don't have).
I know there are a few others that I can't recall, 10" eps, etc... I think
Mary Robinson Crews on this list could help you out and provide you with a www
address.

This is a MUST SEE live band, complete with chicken-eating, Santo-swinging,
and lots of audience participation. You also HAVE to hear Mary sing "My Daddy
Was a Preacher and Momma was a Go Go Girl" (on "For Lovers Only").

hey lola!

you've come to the right place (or i have, or something). yep, SCOTS has
plenty o' stuff available. they hail from chapel hill, nc and have been
around for quite awhile. their last record, "dirt track date" was their
first on a major label, geffen. check out their fan site at
<http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/> which yours truly does a very piss-poor
job of updating on coffee breaks between doing real work (i just don't get
to drink as much coffee as i used to).

they're working up some new songs right now & hope to get into the studio
at the end of this month for a new reckerd.

other stuff that you oughta be able to find pretty readily (in addition to
DTD) includes "Girlfight" just re-released on CD by Sympathy For The Record
Industry and a couple of their older albums on Safehouse Records, "Ditch
Diggin'" and "For Lovers Only".

email me or stop by the website if you need more dirt.

adios,

Sorry about the mispelling, Greg(ory). I'll try not to let it happen again, or to nod the cap to a long lost thread from Bomp list, "my bad".

At any rate, I'm a bit wary (while my girlfriend and her female friends) can't contain themselves, hoping that this Toby guy lives up to his father's Pre Humble Pie looks. Like I said, the verdicts out.

So, have you *seen* them before, heard them even? What's the word?

See you on Saturday at Dottie's. I'll be the mod with girls foaming at the mouth in anticipation. *Sigh*. I hope the guy's ugly. :)

They are the real deal. I saw them a couple of years ago opening for

a husband and wife team contained within the group.

yeah, you got it right -- neither mary or dave was in the band then and
rick was just playing guitar -- not singing. it's still a purty reckerd,
though not really their sound now.

the "santo swings" thing is a '96 estrus reissue of the "santo sings" thing
with the addition of two cover tunes -- the swinging medallions "Double
Shot (of my baby's love)" and the slim harpo number "scratch my back" both
sung in spanish.

very true. come to sleazefest '97 and see 'em (i imagine they'll headline
one of the nights again, though that's unconfirmed at email time). new
tunes to look out for include "Day Old Banana Pudding", "Put Your Shoes
Back On" and at least two tunes that Mary sings.

what a weird coincidence!! rick just called me on the phone. he said to
tell y'all "Dirt Track Date" oughta be pretty easy to find and good luck on
the rest of 'em. we've got a fairly complete discography on the site.
<http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/scots/scotsdisco.html>, but i'm sure we've
left out some comps & import stuff.

happy hunting,

naw, no husband and wife -- least not legally. dave does make an awful
pretty woman when he dresses up, though. you shoulda seen him the other
night -- a dead ringer for Peggy from "King Of The Hill".

i really dig the version of "Camel Walk" that's on the "Santo Swings/Sings"
(estrus/zontar) things, muhself. it's also on the "Dirt Track Date" record.
there's no difference between the CD version of DTD & the vinyl of DTD as
far as i know, though i've certainly been wrong before.

their song "White Trash" also made the big screen in the beavis & butthead
movie (which i've yet to see). they tell me it was used in the scene when
our favorite miscreants found their fathers.

i've also heard that the "camel walk" video is popping up periodically on
MTV's new "all music" channel M2, but our sucky chapel hill cable doesn't
carry it. MTV used to have a 30 second clip of it on their site. it might
still be in the archives somewhere, or maybe on the M2 site if there is one.

Subject: Re: Toby Marriott's Dad

This talk of the Marriotts reminds me...

I was in London in '88 and saw that Steve Marriott was playing in some pub on
the outskirts of town. Don't ask where, exactly, but I know it was a fairly
long ride on the tube from where I was staying (Euston Sta. vicinity). Now, I
was never a big Humble Pie fan, but to this day I am consistently blown away
by his vocal turn on Johnny Thunders' "Daddy Rolling Stone" from the So Alone
LP. It was purely on the basis of those 30 seconds or so that I went to see
him play.

I was somewhat perturbed when I arrived at the pub and saw a sign outside that
said "No Travellers." After all, not only was I from overseas but I had
travelled a distance on the tube as well. A doorman quickly explained that
this didn't mean me, it meant gypsies, so I went on in. In retrospect, it
occurs to me that the morally/politically correct thing to do would have been
to turn around and go back to London but frankly I don't recall having that
thought at the time. But I digress.

This was almost nine years ago, so I'm afraid I can't recall any specifics
such as songs, who else was in the band, etc. But I don know that Steve and
his band put on a great show of blues-rock. At one point I remember he
abandoned the microphone during a quieter number and his voice filled the
room. What I was most impressed with was that he seemed to be having such a
great time. I was wondering if there'd be some sign of bitterness or
dejection at playing a relatively small room in the middle of nowhere, but
there was none. He was exuberant, smiling, and having a ball.

WHAT????!!!!! One of my all-time favorite songs!!!!!! Do they do it complete
with organ????

The only band I've ever heard cover this is the Royal Pendletons (sorry, I
don't think it's available on record, but I think there's a tape a WTUL with
it on it.) Pendletons do a KILLAH cover!

Si, senorita! Es muy groovy. (Presumably you saw the earlier post about a
bonus track on an Estrus re-issue?)

Don't know about the Fireballs, but Tommy Tedesco was ubiquitoous as a
session player in the '60s, most notably as a member of The Wrecking
Crew (T.T., Glenn Campbell, Carol Kaye, etc) that played on many Beach
Boys sessions, among zillions of others. He also wrote a column for
Guitar Player mag in the '70s - '80s that was way over my head, but
gave nifty details on the many sessions he did.

If it's any consolation, *nobody's* cable system is carrying it. The only way
to see it is if you've got one of those big ole dishes (it's not even on the
little-dish services) -- or if you work in the Viacom building.

Hey, I just watched that "Camel Walk" clip and it's got footage from "Flirting
With Disaster" (the Ben Stiller/MTM movie, not the Molly Hatchet song) in it.
I guess that song was in that flick...?

OK, this time I'm really going home.

Billy Strange made millions of guitar albums, mostly MOR, but he could be
good at times. Tommy Tedesco was one of the more famous studio musicians of
the '60s (bass?), he played on all Phil Spector's stuff. Joe Maphis recorded
a lot; his best stuff is totally rockin' but I've heard some junk too. But
that's the thrill of junk-shopping, you never know!

yeah, it's got the movie footage in it. it was a pretty good flick, too,
but really i could do w/o the scenes in the clip. oh well. there was
another version of the video floating around w/o the movie stuff in it.
maybe that's the version they're playing on M2 these days.

(for the record, chapel hill cable really does suck -- no comedy channel,
no sci-fi channel, no cartoon network. our sister city carrboro, home of
the cat's cradle, and bounded almost entirely within the city limits of
chapel hill, however, gets all those channels cause they had a different
cable system. sorry, i get a little wound up about it sometimes...and i
really don't even watch that much TV, honest!)

thanks for the URL to the clip, evan. i'll link to it from our fan site if
that's cool.

one of these days i'll get around to seeing the beavis & butthead thing and
i'll make a note of how much of "white trash" got used.

i don't know if they're gonna make a video for the next record, but i'll
see if i can find out if anybody is interested.

adios,

I'm going on two things here, Alan: First, I saw an interview somewhere on
the web entitled "Monoman Rants" where he says a few nasty things about
them. For one, he was pissed that they took the name (he was gonna use that
name back in the 70's), and then he went on to say how they were pesky and
annoying and found them to be superfluous. He even knocked Estrus, saying
that the label the Mono Men were on was obviously run by some guy with a
trust fund because they put out so many records with slick looking covers.
He, apparently, didn't know Dave owns Estrus. This brings me to my second
story: Last summer, my band played with the Mono Men in Normal, IL (a
genius show that featured Bill Grapes of the Mortals as fill-in guitarist
after the departure of Mort). Afterwards, at the after-hours shindig, I was
hangin' out with Ledge doing what I always do when I hang out with Ledge
(smokin' a joint), and I brought up the interview in which Mono let 'em have
it. Incidentally, the reason it came up was because we were talking about
the Lyres' "A Promise Is A Promise" and I mentioned it wasn't one of my
favorites, while he said it was his favorite! I immmediately segued into
the "so I hear Jeff Conolly hates you guys" thing, and he started laughing.
He hadn't seen the interview, though he told me a hillarious story about an
experience they had with him one time: Ledge and Dave drove up to British
Columbia to see a bunch of bands and the Lyres were on the bill. At the
door there was some sort of confusion about them being on the guest list, so
someone suggested they ask Mono Mann to get them in. Right then, Mono Mann,
having heard this, walked around the corner, saw them, and started yelling,
"I hate those guys-they're not on the guest list!". Of course, I'm
paraphrasing here, but it was something to that effect. Now, Alan, I don't
have the DMZ Bomp! CD, so I wasn't aware that Jeff had changed his position,
but I'm just tellin' you what I read and what I heard from one of the Mono
Men that was actually on the receiving end of a Mono Mann rant. Who knows?

And, Todd, as far as the Mono Men being a metal band goes... I dunno about
that, but they are pretty heavy. The last time I saw them in Chicago,
though, they were a three piece and had lost some of the edge they always
had with Mort (or Marx). I wouldn't call 'em metal, though. Some bands do
the heavy thing pretty well-The Quadrajets, for instance, are a band you
probably consider metal, but I've seen them twice and dig the shit out of
'em. And, after the Oblivians dubbed 13 Frightened Girls "Mono Men Jr.",
I'm sure you won't like my band either. I've said it before, I'll say it
again... can't please all the people all the time. C'est la fuckin' vie.

Hey again Lola (& Bompsters)
SCOTS is my fave band performing at this time! I've been a fan for the
past 3 years or so. they're a 3-piece from Chapel Hill, NC, started by
leader/singer/guitarist Rick Miller in the 80s as a large-ish New Wave
Band that cut a single or 2, which i never heard, but heard it isn't
worth seeking out. Rick reformed the band in the early 90s with
girlfriend gorgeous redhead Mary Huff on bass & Dave Hartman on drums,
though they sometimes have a percussionist that plays a broiler drippan
as a washboard. Their music is somewhere between the Cramps, Link
Wray, the B-52s & the Beverly Hillbillies with a little Herschal Gordon
Lewis thrown in! My buddy Ray turned me on to them years ago & also got
them signed to Geffen, where they're currently recording a new LP. Their
1st CD came out on a small lable & is called Too Much Pork For Just One
Fork - i don't have a copy if anyone has an extra. Then they did 2 for a
small New Hampshire lable, Safe house, - For Lovers Only & Ditch Diggin'
before signing to Geffen & cutting Dirt Track Date, which gave them the
hit Camel Walk - they actually got to perform it on Thanksgiving at
Caesar's palace on a show sponsored by Camel Cigs! They also cut a few
things for indie labels & have a few 10" vinyl things out. santo Swings
is an expanded version of one of 'em, with Santo (note-Santo was a
Mexican wrestler, mask & all, who made a glorious series of mexican
films in which he's a wrestler by day & super hero by night!). SCOTS has
a guest star dress up in full Santo regalia to ing Viva El Santo live
while swigging down bottles of tabasco. One of the best live shows I've
seen in years! Also nice folks in real life.

Best,
GaryM
