new Makers album you were referring to was Hunger, not Fuck You/The Bird, in
the original thread about the Makers vs. the Swingin' Neckbreakers. I
didn't know there was a new album out until I visited their web-site the
other day to get those Heacoats tour dates. I gotta pick that record up,
and, luckily, since we practice in the basement of a cool record store/head
shop, I'll probably do so tonight...

Well... while this was a fantastic night, overall (with Cub and The Muffs
on the bill, too), SCOTS had to cut things to a half hour 'cuz Rick was in
truly terrible shape, having been in the emergency room most of the day,
due to a back problem, I believe. He kept apologizing after the show for
not being able to truly put on a great one. He, Mary and Dave are three
wonderful people.

SCOTS played the wedding of Telstar Record Prez Todd Abramson a couple
years ago, with the Coctails opening up. That was a blast! The wedding
favor was a split single between the two groups. WOW!

Subject: Re:Lyres/Mono Men

>I'm going on two things here, Alan: First, I saw an interview
somewhere on the web entitled "Monoman Rants" where he says a few nasty
things about them. For one, he was pissed that they took the name (he
was gonna use that name back in the 70's), and then he went on to say
how they were pesky and annoying and found them to be superfluous. He
even knocked Estrus, saying that the label the Mono Men were on was
obviously run by some guy with a trust fund because they put out so
many records with slick looking covers. He, apparently, didn't know
Dave owns Estrus. This brings me to my second story: Last summer, my
band played with the Mono Men in Normal, IL (a genius show that
featured Bill Grapes of the Mortals as fill-in guitarist
after the departure of Mort). Afterwards, at the after-hours shindig,
I was hangin' out with Ledge doing what I always do when I hang out
with Ledge (smokin' a joint), and I brought up the interview in which
Mono let 'em have it. Incidentally, the reason it came up was because
we were talking about the Lyres' "A Promise Is A Promise" and I
mentioned it wasn't one of my
favorites, while he said it was his favorite! I immmediately segued
into the "so I hear Jeff Conolly hates you guys" thing, and he started
laughing. He hadn't seen the interview, though he told me a hillarious
story about an experience they had with him one time: Ledge and Dave
drove up to British Columbia to see a bunch of bands and the Lyres
were on the bill. At thedoor there was some sort of confusion about
them being on the guest list, so
someone suggested they ask Mono Mann to get them in. Right then, Mono
Mann,
having heard this, walked around the corner, saw them, and started
yelling,
"I hate those guys-they're not on the guest list!". Of course, I'm
paraphrasing here, but it was something to that effect. Now, Alan, I
don't have the DMZ Bomp! CD, so I wasn't aware that Jeff had changed
his position, but I'm just tellin' you what I read and what I heard
from one of the Mono Men that was actually on the receiving end of a
Mono Mann rant. Who knows?>

Yeah, I think it might be one of those things where Jeff, when
promoting himself and the Lyres, uses the Mono Men thing to say "Hey,
this band named themselves after ME, so I'm famous or whatever. I mean,
I love the Lyres 9and DMZ) but Jeff can be a complete weirdo (and an
asshole), too.

>And, Todd, as far as the Mono Men being a metal band goes... I dunno
about that, but they are pretty heavy.>

I've been hearing this same quote, from so many people, about the Mono
men being "a metal band." Maybe my definition of a "metal band" is a
lot different from what other people think (I think Poison and Motley
Crue) but if you can find me a metal band that does covers of the
Sonics, the Wipers, Kit and the Outlaws, Link Wray and the Rumblers,
then I'll call the Mono Men a "metal band." I know that Dave himself
gets a kick outta thi talk, considering he just thinks of the band as a
"rock n' roll band," and labels mean almost nothing to the guy.
("labels are for clothes" a wise man once said) You know, I think what
is rather so humorous about this is that I asked a very retro/purist
guy once what he hated about metal bands and why he thought bands such
as the Mono Men where metal. His answer was something like, "well,
metal bands dress up all silly with lots of make-up and teased hair and
it's juts an act and a show." His favorite bads were things like the
Fuzzztones, Chesterfield Kings, etc., so my response was like "sure,
just like those bands who dress up and have bowl haircuts and it's just
an act." Same difference (tho', for my own musical tastes, I'd take the
'Tones and Kings over Crue and Poison anytime), it's just
entertainment. On the other hand, I have to say i think the Mono Men
are honest in their approach in that they like this music and it just
comes out this way. They get up there in their jeans and t-shirts and
wear dorky glasses and rock out for the hell out it, with little or no
pretense. They don't have teased hair, big label producers, videos on
MTV, and a lot of the trappings of "metal bands," so how are they a
metal band? I guess I'm just curious here. Is it the sound? Is it the
production? Is it Dave Crider's attitude? Maybe the fact that I grew up
in a small Ontario town that was literally filled with bad Top 40, and
, yes, Metal bands - bands that played covers of Crue and Poison and
Guns and Roses and were really heavy but simply didn't rock made me
respect a band that can be heavy without being cliched metal stuff. Or
maybe it's just that I actually like some early '70s "metal" (ACDC,
Kiss, Black Sabbath) and I still don't think ther Mono Men sound like
them, either. I remember when we brought the Cynics and the Mono Men to
town for a big all ages show, and the Mono Men certainly did not go
down too well with some of the "metal crowd" who showed up outta
curiosity. A club known for booking lameass, but heavy rock bands even
turned the Mono Men down for a show based on the fact that they thought
their tape wasn't very good, and too "amateurish." They obviouslyu
didn't think they were "metal" enough to book them.

Okay, 'nuff said. I love ther Mono Men and I'll defend 'em 'till the
day I die.

Truth be told, when Jeff submitted those liner notes, I had to tone down his
remarks about the Mono Men, which I thought were gratuitous and completely
unfair. When I talked to him about it, he had no idea who they were, was just
bugged that they used a name he had thought up. I told him i thought it was
more like a tribute than a ripoff. He agreed that I should change the
notes, but I guess he never got around to changing his mind.... he can be a
bit off the wall sometimes, as we all know, but then that's part of why we
love him....

Subject: Knight of Fuzz, etc....

Hey!

A page about all the other cool Borderline Productions books is finally
attached to the web site for my new "Knights of Fuzz" garage/psych book.
My book documents the '80s/'90s scene, while most of the other Borderline
books deal with the '60s output. They're worth a look...

http://www.azstarnet.com/~tgassen

And my regular page of garage/psych reviews is in the new Magnet (a
national music magazine). The column was supposed to be called "Garage
Nation," but is listed as simply "Garage" for this issue. We'll see what
it's called next month! We might be able to attach each column to my web
site as well, since there isn't (yet) an on-line version of Magnet...

new releases of mine:
A couple Purple Merkins cuts on the Misty Lane compilation LP "Transworld
Garage." Plenty of great tracks on this Italian LP, with the Pandoras
cover by Thee Flypped Whiggs my current fave.(And dig Darren Merinuk's
'66-styled Batman cover art!) One of the Purple Merkins' songs is listed
by The Marshmallow Overcoat by mistake. Easy mistake since both bands
have the same members! (The "Merkinmania!" LP tapes are done and now
searching for a label...)

And the vinyl version of the new self-titled Marshmallow Overcoat LP is
finally available from 360 Twist. (The CD has been out for a couple
months...) Gotta love that full-color cover photo full of Vox and Dan
Electro!

One more: Bacchus Archives has taken both of the Dearly Beloved and
Grodes LPs and combined them as the "Let's Talk About Girls" 28 song CD.
(Thanks again Greg!!!) Both bands were kings of the 1960s Tucson scene,
and as a Tucsonan I was especially pleased to be able to re-write/edit
Greg Shaw & Lee Joseph's extensive liner notes (which were great to begin
with!) More cool re-issues on the way....

All for now. Drop a line if you have anything you want me to review...

Don't forget the fuzz!

Being a Bostonian and having the "pleasure" of having Jeff throw
watermelon rinds off our front porch during a party once (He also wanted
me to beat him with a steak knife...but enough about that) I have anther
thing to add about the "Mono Men"--I believe Jeff has occassionaly used
the name himself, when playing with people who aren't the Lyres--kind of
one shot deals here and there. He's supposed to do this at my husband
(Kenne Highland)'s birthday Apr. 2 at the Kirkland Cafe in
Somerville--it'll be the "Mono Men" fronted by Jeff, backed by Kenne,
K's bassist Mike Quirk, Doom Buggie drummer Alex, and guitarist Bruce
of the Devotions. At least, thats the PLAN..... along with 12 other
bands...
