Subject: The SuperNaturals

The SuperNaturals played at Dottie's in Atlanta, Georgia last night to a crowd of about 30. If you've ever been to Dottie's, you'll also know that the fewer people the better. At any rate, Mary and I arrived a bit late, thinking that the Lizardmen were opening for the SuperNaturals. This wasn't the case. We came in to find a young band on stage who sounded to be caught somewhere between Pub Rock and Peal Jam. On guitar was Toby Marriott.

Toby bears a very strong resemblance to his father, the most noticable difference being his Geldof-esque sunken cheeks. Still, if you had to pick him out of a crowd, you could. The same compliments, however, can't be extended to his clothes. Baggy khaki trousers and work boots complimented (?) a green and yellow Van Gogh looking nylon shirt (again, 2 sized too large). Though, he did have halfway decent hair.

The SuperNaturals went through their set fairly easily, but I couldn't help but notice that they seemed to just be going through the motions. Toby did sing one number, but a botched mix made his voice sound something like he had the mumps. Musical highlight of the evening was a 12 bar blues jam, which, while still sounding very pub rock oriented, sounded vaguely to be based on the Yardbird's classic "Jeff's Boogie". One of the Lizardmen camp sat in with some very appreciated harp sounds from the back of the stage, which still provided their Stone Temple Pilots loving singer an opportunity to stand at the front of the band and look utterly useless while he sipped a Budweiser and made eyes at the girls in the audience. They ended their set with a lackluster version of "Twist and Shout", with a botched ending halfway through Toby's uncomfortable guitar solo. I think the singer was confused.

The Atlanta mod scene was represented by only 5. Francois, Justin and Kelly arrived early and got to speak with Toby. Toby is very aware of all of the recent hoopla surrounding the Small Faces. He owns the book, he knew about the convention in London (Francois was more than happy to point out that he was wearing the same outfit that he wore to the convention :^), and he keeps contact with Ronnie Lane (and his wife who is apparently quite mean as the rumor goes), Kenny Jones and Ian Maclagan. Apparently, we were the first mods he's come in contact with (unless you count the aging Small Faces) and for what it's worth, he looked at us a lot. Whether this was out of appreciation or worry, I still don't know. Still, he seemed very sincere and appreciative to hear complimentary words about his father. It seems that his mother (or step-mother) is in Jail in England right now, but those details aren't known to me.

So, I can't say much for the SuperNaturals, but Toby Marriott is a competent guitar player, and, at the young age of 21, has a lot ahead of him. Maybe he'll ditch his band for something more worthwhile. So who does he like better.....The Small Faces, Humble Pie or Packet of Three? I was scared to ask, for fear of the answer.

Brian Poust

Subject: AGONNAGAIN

We had practice last night, and I found out a couple of cool things
regarding Gonn (again). First, Craig Moore wants to put out a compilation
record of all the cover versions of "Blackout Of Gretely". So if any of you
were/are in a band, and you have a version to submit, by all means send it
to Craig. Secondly, I had mentioned in a previous thread about us recording
with Craig- though, it hasn't happened yet, he did say he wanted to do a
PUNK version of "Come With Me To The Stars", and we're gonna back him up!
That oughtta be a trip...

Also, I had mentioned I was gonna pick up the Makers' "Hunger" LP last
night, but it won't be in stores until later this month.

One last thing... Does anybody know what the advance ticket situation is
for this Detroit fest? And likewise, are advance tickets being sold for
Thee Headcoats/Makers show in Detroit?

Actually, I should probably blame the program that Bolis is using, which
doesn't give you a choice and (on my rather standard mail program) forces
the reply to the list only. If you need further instructions, e-mail me.

Can anyone tell me who runs this record store off Harvard Square in
Cambridge? The place is off the square and in a basement. It specializes

the name of the place. The owner was extremely knowledgeable and more than
willing to answer my question about the Misunderstood and Renegades.

And my thanks to who ever recommended Mars on Mass. Avenue!

Sounds like you ran into Twisted Village - the record store spinoff of
the label of the same name. Wayne Rogers (psycho-guitarist of
Crystallized Movements, Magic Hour, and several solo albums) is the head
honcho.

Subject: Re: Mono Mann vs. The Mono Men

I remember that Mono Men/Cynics tour that Alan mentioned... they also came
to Hoboken to play Maxwells. I also seem to remember it being during the
week or something, 'cuz it wasn't much of a crowd.

Anyway, I can't remember if it was Jeff or Dave who told me that Jeff had
gotten pissed at the owner of the club in Boston that had booked the Mono
Men/Cynics show. Jeff was really pissed that this guy, who he considered
his friend, would book a band that he felt was ripping him off.

Back around '91 or so, when The Teen Scene was still in its infancy, a
friend of mine was working for the PR firm that worked for Taang!, the
label that The Lyres were then involved with. Anyway, she needed to get
Jeff interviewed and knew I loved the band (and had since I was 18, when I
saw them with The Mosquitos at Irving Plaza on 7/20/84.) So, I agreed to
do it. What the heck, help out a friend, get some good stuff for the
'zine, and talk to Jeff for a while.

We got there (my best friend, another big Lyres fan, was up for the weekend
from DC) and found Jeff. He asked how long it would take, 'cuz he didn't
have much time. We told him we could do it in 15 minutes, if he liked.
Well, we got to talking and we spent almost an hour and a half down there
in the Maxwells' basement. Truth be told, I'd been kinda worried, 'cuz I'd
been having trouble coming up with questions to ask. As it turned out, it
was really fantastic. I'd been a Lyres' fan for so long that I knew tons
of stuff that I could just ask him about. And, being an organ player
myself (well... OK, a pretty mediocre organ player, but...), we also had
some things to talk about on that score.

Quite true. I absolutely love The Lyres and DMZ (the Lyres more, but
that's just one man's opinion. The DMZ reunion in '93 was truly
incredible.) However, I do think Jeff is, as Greg wrote, "off the wall
sometimes." One of the things I asked him about during the interview that
night was the California version of The Lyres. For those who are unaware,
Jeff moved to San Diego in late '88 or early '89 to be with his girlfriend
or something. Anyway, once he'd been there for a couple months, he wanted
to play again. So he got The Nashville Ramblers (Carl Rusk, Tom Ward, &
Ron Silva, also known as The Blackmores when they were all in NYC) to back
him. Well, that lasted no more than six months, by which point they'd all
had enough and all quit at one time. (I believe they may be the only
Lyres' lineup to go in one fell swoop.) Well, you should've heard Jeff
talk about *that* during the interview.

I never did get around to publishing that, probably 'cuz my friend quit
that PR firm within the next couple weeks. However, I did hand the tape
over to my ex-roommate, The Skeever, a few years later when he started his
'zine, CapSoul Reviews. Do a search for CapSoul Reviews and Skeever and
you'll find him (I don't remember the URL). Dunno if he's still got the
interview there, but there's some great stuff on the page, anyway
(including a sound clip of Lou Reed yelling at Steve on the answering
machine to pick up the phone, from when The Skeever was his PA). Even if
the piece of the interview that he published *isn't* still there, you might
be able to get him to put it up again.

OK, I've rambled for far too long. I'll close with this... The Lyres are
one of the absolute *BEST* bands of our time. Jeff may act completely off
the wall and be a bit of a jerk sometimes, but we all do, although not
always to such a degree. Even so, he can also be a really nice guy.
And... some of his songs are pure genius.

Johnny Burnette & The Rock 'n' Roll Trio (1956). This cover of
Tiny Bradshaw's much different original version (from 1950!)
seemingly inspired all the later power covers.

That was probably The Johnny Burnette Trio, with the great Paul Burlison
on guitar. Probably my favorite rockabilly artist/band of all time.

The definitive CD of their stuff is on Bear Family Records (the great W.
German) label, catalog no. BCD 15474. 28 tracks, 32 page booklet.
GREAT!
