yeah tj, i am probably splittin hairs here-obviously they are not a metal
combo but i do find em to be a bit heavy and plodding?! it surprises me that
for a label that has such good taste in both the bands and cover art they
work with that the mono men are my least fave on the label-with the exception
of gravel.....i think the m. men are like the lime spiders without guitar
solos. and you are right you can't please everybody....i have wrecker, shut
up and stop draggin me down so i have tried to find their hidden charms. nice

Ugh. Cambridge cable is the same. We get none of those channels. We just
got AMC and Bravo. The cities next to us, Allston/Brighton, get literally
EVERY channel -- including Canadian MTV (Much Music, which isn't that bad and
has a low-budget feel to it like MTV did circa 1981.) But I don't think I
want to be surrounded by BU and BC students again just to get good cable (no
offense to anyone who went to these schools.)

Very well said, Greg! Jeff is off the wall, and when he's in a bad mood you
just gotta stay out of his way, but when he's in a good mood he is so
hysterically funny!

I just found out that he jogs almost every day. I guess along the Charles,
since he lives near it (and a few blocks from me). He also has a walk-up on
the fourth or fifth floor. ARGH!

Actually, he uses "Man or Monoman?" which sorta spoofs both himself and Man or
Astroman, I guess. (Wonder how they feel? Well, they seems like pretty easy
going guys with a sense of humor so they probably don't mind.) He's used this
only once, to my knowledge, with the Swingin' Neckbreakers in Denver last
August. He may use it again in Detroit this May back by the Hentchmen. I'd
like to see him do this in Boston!

Oh, yeah, and he'll only rehearse this band once (or so he told me).

>Dude, ain't no big thing... it's entirely subjective, anyway- liking this
band or that band- but I just couldn't accept the fact that you had labeled
them metal. I agree 100% that they are heavy and plodding, though. And,
yep, they do sound like the Lime Spiders without guitar solos (think the
Nomads are a HUGE influence too?). You're probably not alone when you say
they're your least favorite Estrus band (except for Gravel- which, I'm sure,
alot of people-purist or not-will agree with you on them). Maybe I
prejudged you when I said you probably wouldn't like my band either. I
dunno. Maybe we'll be your third least favorite Estrus band? Maybe not...
Buffy from the Subsonics told me that we reminded her of a cross between The
Woggles, The Cynics, and the 13th Floor Elevators (what a compliment!).
Eric Oblivian, as I mentioned, called us "Mono Men Jr.". On that note, I
have a relevant story for ya: After the Oblivians/Impala show, Eric was
telling our drummer, Tom (Tom's Strip-N-Bowl), how frickin' genius he
thought Tom's zine (El Diablo) was. Tom, in turn, told Eric how cool
looking he thought their record covers were, but how much he DIDN'T like the
sound of the records contained within those swell lookin' sleeves. He said
he just didn't get it, and Eric was totally cool with that. Not everything
clicks with everybody. It's nice to see you've at least made an effort to
try to like the Mono Men. And, yes Dave is a super nice guy, and Estrus is
one helluva label...

I'm looking forward happily to further acquisition.

So, "Camel Walk" is like Big Time MTV stuff, huh? I'll tune in if I
must...*sigh* I was impressed even more by the instros "Walleyed" &
"Meximelt", like WOW!!! My hypercritical guitar-whangin' spouse said the
tone on "Meximelt" was about as Dick Dale as Dick himself.

"Double Shot" & "Scratch My Back", while fun, seem a bit weak to me, in
comparison to their guitar muscle, anyway.

Back 10 (!) years ago, me & my best friend went to Memphis to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of Elvis's death (8/87)at the Holiday Inn on Elvis
Presley Blvd. There was an Elvis swap meet at the Inn, & all the old
ladies wanted to get pics of Fat Elvis in Vegas. There was a table that
noone was going to, for the Sun All-Stars, who were having their 1st
concert during the week - they were 50s rockbilly all-stars who recorded
for Rounder later on & ended up having their show postpone until after
me & Marc left Memphis.
Anyways, there was no-one at the table. We went to the tble because
we saw the name-tags of 2 of the 3 guys behind the table. One was Paul
Burlison, who of course practically invented the modern electric guitar
technique on Train Kept A'Rollin', the other being the (now late) Marcus
Van Story, who was Jerry Lee Lewis's slap bass player from the
beginning. We first noticed Paul & fannishly slobbered over him, which
he obviouly had NEVER had happen to him, then noticed Marcus, & the guy
without a nametag. We talked music with them for awhile. Then Paul
motioned us to the guy without a name tag. "Since you guys are big music
fans, you might wanna say 'hi' to my buddy DJ Fontanna". Both our jaws
dropped at the thought of being in the presence of Elvis's long time
drummer!! Me & Marc left DJ, Paul & Marcus VERY happy!
We were sitting in the lobby when we heard someone say "Hey! There's
those guys who knew who we were!!" We looked up & there as Marcus, Paul
& DJ with huge grins on their faces, coming over to us to shake our
hands & thank us for coming! I still have a flier for the cancelled Sun
All-Stars show with signitures of 3 of the folks who've given me decades
of RnR pleasure!!

best,
GaryM

Subject: Sonics/Kingsmen/Chocolate Watchband

Last night, I heard about this radio station in Peoria that plays nothing
but Louie Louie. Seriously, all Louie Louie, all the time! So, naturally,
when I tuned in and heard the DJ say "if you've got a favorite version of
Louie Louie you wanna hear, give me a call", I picked up the phone
immediately and requested the Sonics version. To my surprise, the guy said
he had it right in front of him, and would play it after he played the
Kingsmen version a few more times! Whoa! He did play it, which was way
cool, but when I called back a little while later to request it again, he
said he couldn't play it for like another hour or so. How fucking absurd
that they'd play the Kingsmen version over and over and over, but the
assholes won't play the Sonics version more than once an hour.

I'm not knocking the Kingsmen, by the way. I saw 'em play on a sidewalk
under the marquee of an old art deco theatre a few years back, and they were
pretty cool. I believe there's only two original members in the band now,
though. They said they were walking down the street in Normal (IL) that day
and heard The Sonics blasting out of the street level speakers outside of
this record store. They must've been inspired by that, 'cause after they
told that story and said how cool they thought the Sonics were, they broke
into Dirty Robber, which was pretty rockin'. I believe Andy Parypa even
played in the Kingsmen for a short stint there.

Another weird story about Peoria radio (file this under cosmic synchronicity):
Many years ago when my band first released our 4-track demo tape, I was
standing in the kitchen telling my brother-in-law about the songs on it
(they were all covers). When he got to the last song on the track listing,
he goes, "Darkside Of The Mushroom"??? So, I had to explain that this was a
song by the Chocolate Watchband (whom he'd never heard of), and that I
wasn't surprised he'd never heard of them as they're never played on oldies
radio or anything like that. Anyway, I gave him a copy of the tape, he
left, and- I swear to God- "Let's Talk About Girls" by the Chocolate
Watchband came on the oldies radio station that was playing in my mom's
kitchen! I about shit my pants. More amazingly, later that day, I drove
down to Normal, and just as I approached the record store I was going to....
what did I hear coming from the outside speakers (yes, the same store the
Kingsmen heard the Sonics blasting out of)??? Yep, the Chocolate Watchband!
 Too weird...

Other than those two instances, and the short-lived Craig Moore radio show,
Peoria radio SUCKS in a major way. For that matter, Peoria, period, sucks
in a major way, but that's a different story.

yesterday for .50 apiece:
A PICTURE SLEVE 45 of Jane Birkin(and of course, Serge) of J'TME(I don't
think I spelled that correctly) with JANE B. on the flip
side...MINT-O-DELIC!!!!!!

and, something an ex had that I coveted...It was a promo 45 put out by
T-I-A by a group called THE CASUALS...It sounds like great, spacey,
lounge-core stuff, and the melody is a lot like "I SAW HER AGAIN LAST
NIGHT..." Can someone tell me something about the Casuals?

My first exposure to SCOTS was when Good Morning America (I think) had a
remote from the UNC campus at Chapel Hill and the band played out to a
commercial break. Not being savvy on modern rock bands, I thought they were
just some local band who got a gig on a morning show because they were at
Chapel Hill.

I still don't have any SCOTS records, nor have I heard anything beyond what
they played on GMA, but I did find myself blown away by that one brief
moment.

Hey TJ!
What's the station's call letters? Is there anyay you can run me a 90
minute tape of their airtime? I'll tade you a tape or send you a blank!
I'm on list of people who collect airchecks & who'd be interested. BTW,
my band , The Art Faggots, participated in the great 80s bay Area Louie
Louie wars between KALX berkeley & KFJC San Joe, contributing a version
called Lou & Louie!

Hmm... not a bad description, really. At least, if we're talking about the
later Lime Spiders' material, which I never thought was all that good. On
the other hand, "Slave Girl" and "Beyond The Fringe" still send me into
orbit. They *are* heavy, but... WOW!

Actually, I guess that just proves the point... heavy can be good. I'll
admit to not being much of a Mono Men fan, but that's a personal opinion.
(I liked some of their early stuff, but that's about it.) On the other
hand, I think Dave Crider's a really nice guy and he runs one of the best
labels in existence.

Speaking of the Lime Spiders... what's Mick Blood up to now?

Also... for some reason, when I think about the Lime Spiders, another group
tends to get the synapses snapping, as well: The Boys From Nowhere. It
probably has more than a little to do with my putting them back to back on
a tape a few years ago, but there are some similarities in their sound,
too. (Probably why I put 'em right up against each other on that tape,
huh?) Anyone know what Mick Divvens is doing now? Some of their records
are true classics.

Anyone know if the Garage Sale cassette (ROIR, 1985) - featuring The
Mosquitos, Vipers, Fuzztones, Cheepskates, Pandoras, Mystic Eyes, Telltale
Hearts, and a ton more - is going to be released on CD. A few other cool
ROIR titles came out on disc and I'd really love to get this one, too.
It's probably one of my fave comps of the mid-80s garage scene.

I seem to remember the Sun All Stars playing a rockabilly fest outside
Lincoln Center in the summer of '88 or '89. Could've been later, I just
don't remember. I think they might've been the only good group of the old
bunch... well, except, of course, for the still (and probably forever)
phenomenal Mr. Ronnie Dawson.

awww, i'm flattered! y'all lemme know if i get something wrong or if i can
dig around and find out something elst for any of y'all.

oh, it's probably not worth all the other stuff you'd have to wait & wade
through. i don't think they're showing it regularly. if you've got a fast
connection you oughta check out the clip on the MTV site that evan pointed
out to us. (that URL again,

oh, i really dig "meximelt" (inspired by the taco bell treat of the same
name) and walleyed, too. there's always a couple of instrumentals on each
of their records, but those are two of my faves.

fair reaction. enjoyable, though.

anyhow, y'all drop on by the website <http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/scots/>
if you've a mind to and let me know if i can help you in your SCOTS search
in any way.

adios,

REALLY!!!??? What song(s)? When was this?

I've never seen Springsteen (never much liked his voice, songwriting,
guitar style, etc.), but if he played at a local bar and I found out he was
gonna play Sonics covers, I'd go just to see what would happen. It might
sound awful, but it'd be an experience.

By the way, I'm also still annoyed about how Eddie & The Cruisers attempted
to make the case that New Jersey Rock'n'Roll has sounded like Springsteen
since the mid-60s. Please. Just pick up Attack of the Jersey Teens and
that theory gets shot down.

well, to be a stickler for such things (and cause i'm a UNC fan) the
broadcast was actually from arch-rival school DOOK in Durham, a mere hop,
skip & jump away from SCOTS' chapel hill digs. they actually hadda fly in
for the show, though, cause they were out on tour (i think in LA) when the
thing was broadcast. they were pretty bleary-eyed and made cracks about it
being awful early in the morning for them to play. it was really cold, too,
as i recall.

>I still don't have any SCOTS records, nor have I heard anything beyond what

the songs they played were "Fried Chicken & Gasoline" and " Voodoo
Cadillac" and both of 'em are on the geffen cd "Dirt Track Date", or for
you vinyl hounds the Telstar LP of the same name.

it was a pretty good gig such as it was. what made it for me was the whole
pig being BBQ'd nearby on a slow cooker. they panned over to it at one
point and it was pretty...ummmm...graphic, i guess, for a
semi-not-really-vegetarian like me. it really made the SCOTS thing, though.
it was perfect.

they were on the Tonight Show awhile back, too. it was kinda improptu, i
think, but it turned out good, too. they did "camel walk", of course.
afterward Jay Leno was introducing the band and he said "And on drums, Drew
Carey!" (no matter that Dave Hartman is about half the size of Drew...)
