Never heard that single or the LP, but LOVE the Roses Are Red (My
Love)/Playboy single. Remember buying it the same day as Love potion #9
by The Searchers. I DO remember DJs making fun of their fake accent, &
one saying they were probably from Brooklyn!

But they ARE mentioned in Alan Clayson's book The Beat Merchants. There
were a few bands that seemed to get US LP deals without ones in UK (Ian
& The Zodiacs, maybe?). Don't forget bands like the DC5 & Herman's
Hermits had TONS of US LPs out with only a couple (mostly hits
compilations) in the UK. And weren't Creation's LPs only released in
Germany?

For a few years I've been looking for the soundtrack to Beyond the Valley of
the Dolls. The album goes for more than $100 and I saw a European bootleg cd
once for $75. Well last week I picked up a new release of BTVOTD with the
soundtrack from the movie Groupie Girl for $25. It's on Screen Gold Records
and has a 1997 date on the back. I'm sure it's probably a boot. Has anyone
heard of Groupie Girl? I looked it up in a few cult movie books and couldn't
find it. The bands are Opal Butterfly, English Rose, Salon Band, Virgin Stigma
and Billy Boyle. All the booklet says is "Sex-hungry Superfans of the Pop
Stars...they don't collect autographs any more!" The cover says "Two Great
"Chick Flick" Soundtracks on one CD!

I've picked up the three Russ Meyer soundtracks cds. Each has songs and
dialogue from three of his films with a big color booklet of wild and raunchy
photos-so beware!

If this is the Dialboliks with the album on Dionysus (3 gals & 1 guy wearing=

One of the members, Anja, is 1/2 of a clothing line/store called Babzotica. =

BTW the soundtrack versions of the songs are not the same versions as

The band was around for less that a year, 1991-92 and included three
former members of the Worst (the same line-up that was on their first
Screaming Apple EP), a radio dj from Victoria named The Amazing Larry
and myself. We recorded four or five songs at a studio in Vancouver in
a retro garage vein and that was that. The song "We're The Upper Crust"
appears on the CD. Co-incidentally, another old band of mine, the 14th
Wray are on the CD, and Greg Watson who was one of the guitarists
appears as a member of the Fiends on the Time Machine CD as well. The
Fiends feature the former singer with the Worst! I don';t know if the
other Upper Crust was around the same time or not. Wasn't one of the
guys in the UC in that band the Flies from years ago? I have a couple
of 12" records by them, and found a 7" by them from '84 a few weeks go.
It's got Clint from Moving Parts/Space Negroes/Mission Of Burma fame
playing sitar on the b-side.

Maybe, maybe not. You need to have really strong vocals to do "Find
It" justice. I mean, the chick who sings it is wailing! Kind of sounds
like Cher! The Diaboliks are okay, but Babs is not the greatest
vocalist. She does a good job of designing clothes for her to pop out
of, though.

Well, you pre-dated the (latter-day) Crust by a couple of years.

Yep. Nat Freedberg, a/k/a Lord Bendover, is a former Fly. All I've heard
(and have) is a 6-song 12-inch on Restless - "Get Burned"? It includes such
hits as "Zombie Burger" and "I'm In Pittsburgh and it's Raining." That 7" you
found sounds interesting.

Actually, this goes WAY back. When i was roadie-ing for the Pagans in
'78, we played Minneapolis. The opening band, The Suburbs (one of the
best live bands I ever saw!) was using a bar-stool for a stand. In my
days with The Jars, my organ stand was a shopping cart which, besides
being a group trademark was great for lugging equipment. Our later
Subterranean lablemates Wilma (how come they've never been acknowledged
as Riot Grrl ancestors?) used an ironing board around '81.

Best,

I really loved The Flies... "All Hung Up" was a killer single. Yeah,
you're right, Nat Freedberg (of the Upper Crust) was in The Flies... He was
also in The Titanics. (And, later, I believe, The Satanics.)

The Diaboliks... I really like that CD on Dionysus. Tons of fun. My high
school students really enjoyed it, too. (Yeah, and that's *without* seeing
the CD cover.) They especially dug the version of "Willie the Wild One."

Someone (Brian Poust, maybe?) mentioned that he thought there was a CA band
with the same name... I think that group was just called Diabolik. I
believe John Chilson (Loons, Evil Eyes, Hoods, Trebels) played with them...
they also featured a female who had a clothing store, Mrs. Mirella Wiseman,
wife of singer Jay, ex-Hoods and Trebels. I never got to hear this bunch,
but I had a blast some years back when Mirella and her friend Liz ended up
staying at my place in NJ for a weekend 'cuz our mutual pal Rockin' Ron
Rimsite (ex-'99th Floor fanzine publisher) told Mirella I might be able to
put them up.

Speaking of which... anyone hear from Rockin' Ron of late?

I was wondering if any of you out there had a working knowledge of The Fugs
back catalog? I was recently looking through a discography on line, through
the Delerium website, and they listed the Fugs' debut release as "The First
Album" (ESP1018, 1965) followed by the self titled album (ESP1028, 1966). My
question is this, I've got an album called "The Village Fugs Sing The Songs
of the Village Fugs" on Broadside Records (304), I'm not sure of the year.
Can anybody tell me what year this came out and why it might not have been
included in the discography?

Yeah, the Broadside album and ESP 1018 are the same thing... ESP reissued
the Broadside lp. I am informed by a certain coworker (Dr. Arwulf Arwulf)
that the Broadside lp contains a different (he says better) take of
"Swinburne Stomp." So that Broadside lp is a hot item, I would bet!
I believe Fantasy has put this out on cd now with extra tracks. I don't
know which take of that tune is on it (or if both are).

I believe it came out in '65, the year the ESP rerelease is dated to.

I disagree... I don't think they sound anything like the Trashwomen,
although it *is* girl-vocal garage rock, but the Diaboliks have more of
a 60's garage pop sound, sorta like the Pleasure Seekers, and not as
lo-fi or noisy as the Trashwomen. They do great covers of Willy the
Wild One, He's Got Everything, and my favorite is an original called
Guess I'm Falling in Love with a great fuzz-guitar sound. Get it!!
