The Fugs First Album is a reissue of The Village Fugs. Check out the
recent Ace/Fantasy reissue of the Fugs stuff, with TONS of unissued
material!
Has anyone who's a Fugs fan from the 60s heard their 80s reunion stuff
to be able to compare & say if it's worth it? And does anyone have a
copy of the Fugs backers, the Holy Modal Rounders LP The Moray Eels Eat
The Holy Modal Rounders they can sell, trade or tape for me?

Best,

Okay, folks, who wants to tell me about this band?? I just heard a tape of
their CD (thanks Billy B!) and it's killer - great cover songs throughout plus
some solid originals like my favorite (and a great title too) "5-4-3-2-Baby
You're The One".

Background, contact info, label, whatever would be appreciated! Thanks!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress...

Talking about the Fun Things (Vikings are covering "Savage"),
Blair sent me that fine piece of history some weeks ago.
- ----------------------------------------------------------
The Vikings are a sort of side project for everyone involved. The
 group
includes members of Kare & The Cavemen, The Yum-Yums (*fantastic*
group), TBRNGR, and The Devil Dogs. Yeah, that's right... The Devil
Dogs. The leader of the group is Steve Baise, the DD bassist. How
did he get involved with a bunch of cool Oslo types? Well, he was
married to a gal in The Blind Bats (another Oslo group) and would be
there for a few weeks at a time. The group played some live gigs as
Steve & The Devil Frogs. The record was originally s'posed to be
billed as being by God Lived. (2 points to the genius who can figure
out the name.)
Anyway... The Devil Dogs *also* covered a Fun Things' track - "Time
 Enough
For Love." I know Keith Streng of The Fleshtones and Dave Faulkner of
The Hoodoo Gurus were pretty revved by the DD version of this when
they caught the group one night at Continental in NYC.
Sadly, the D. Dogs are no longer with us. Besides the Vikings'
 stuff,
Steve has also recorded with members of Japanese groups The Jet Boys &
the 5,6,7,8s as Pearl Schwartz. Singer/guitarist, the Fabulous Andy
G. has recorded and performed with girlfriend Candy Del Mar
(ex-Cramps) in a group called Los Primos. Drummer Mighty Joe Vincent
was with them for a while, but now plays and records with his
girlfriends otherwise all-female combo, The Prissteens.

I thought their Cd was pretty tinny and lo-fi sounding, myself, but
yeah, they're not as surf-sounding as the Trashwomen. Also, Babs'
vocals aren't as "screechy" as the Trashwomen's singer (Elka?) But, I

Babs sent me a ctaalogue of here stuff years ago, and has continued to

I'd look pretty silly in a lot of them.

Just a word of warning. I recently got a review copy of the album he
released last year that had redone versions of his hits, including "Wild
Thing" and "Angel of the Morning." He's much more country, relaxed
songwriter than rocker. "Wild Thing" is very much the exception to his
music. He's much closer to Arlo Guthrie or Steve Goodman than the Troggs. Enjoy!

Subject: all "Louie Louie", all the time...

Recently, we were talking about the radio station in Peoria that played
nothing but "Louie Louie". In Tuesday's Chicago Tribune (Tempo section),
Bob Greene did a write-up on that station's short-lived all-"Louie Louie"
format. Apparently, WMXP picked the song because it was the most popular
song in the world among people who are between the ages of 35 and 49. Of
the 1,200 some odd versions of "Louie Louie", WMXP had access to only 25-
and 90% of the time they opted to play the Kingsmen's rendition. As I
mentioned before, it only lasted six days, afterwhich the station announced
it was switching to an all-oldies format. Bob Greene had this to say:
"With all-"Louie Louie," at least you would know that when you turned your
radio on you would be happy. How many stations- radio or TV- can give you
that guarantee?" Ain't that the truth?
Whoa-whoa... I gotta go now,

The movie is also known as I AM A GROUPIE. It's a British film from 1970.
Opal Butterfly once included Lemmy from Motorhead. A great trailer for the
film can be seen in the Something Weird Video release, TEENAGE U.F.O. ROCK
AND ROLL MONSTER SHOW, and the music in that sounded pretty good. (Not to be
confused with I'M A GROUPIE, a European film from the same year directed by
"Fred Williams")
