believe how great those first five seconds were. The leads were amazing.<<

Glad to see someone appreciates BJM. I still think they're the best band in
years, and I'm tired of people saying I've had a lapse of taste. Show me one
other band who can do what these guys can! Anyway they're woodshedding in
L.A. currently and playing around town, but there probably won't be a
national tour until after the next album is done--I'd guess August. Since you
are in Tucson, you might want to visit L.A. before heading back east. I'm
sure they'd be glad to welcome a fan--they have a very large house.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre are probably the best thing about San
Francisco's music scene right now! When I lived in that city from
mid-'93 to late '94, they were already a fixture in SF's local live band
scene, although at this time they hadn't put out anything on CD and no
one outside the Bay Area had heard of them. I saw them live a few times,
and I could always count on them to put on a way-cool trippy mindfuckfest
which seemed to be charged with a rather mellow kind of energy. Back
then they had a little "mini-scene" of friends and fellow SFers who were
into droney indie stuff like Spacemen 3 or Th' Faith Healers - there was
a band called the Imajinary Friends consisting of a few BJM members as
well as the original drummer for Swervedriver.

Anyway, the BJM are definitely one of the most interesting indie bands
around at the moment. METHODRONE, their first disc, combines all the
best elements of My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, the Seeds and late-'60s
Rolling Stones; THANK GOD FOR MENTAL ILLNESS is an acoustic, lo-fi jam
session which sounds like some jam session the Stones did when Brian
Jones was still with the band.

As for touring, I've never seen or heard anything about them touring
outside California; I certainly doubt I'll see them swing by this neck
of the woods (NYC), although if they did I'd definitely catch them.

Last week I bought the LP The Phantom Surfers and Dick Dale on Crown
records.
It was sad there is no documentation on it. Is it an old or new LP. I
have some records of the Phantom Surfers from the 90's. This is the
same group?

Does anybody have information about this record?

actually, they just moved to LA about 3 weeks ago!

I think it is so fab how all of their albums are sooo different!
Methodrone and Mental Illness are actually my favorites (out of 4 total
albums, which were released all within a very short period of time)

I don't think they have been to NYC, but they do get out of Cali. In
February they were up here in Portland with me. They were on a West
Coast tour with Swoon 23 (a MUST!! they are FAB) and the Dandy Warhols
(a band I work for). All of them played a Seattle show together too. AND
they were at SxSW in Texas. I believe they actually have some good
friends living in NYC so them coming out there isn't entirely
impossible!

BJM, The Dandy's and Swoon 23 are all a part of an upcoming documentary
based mostly on these three but including about 10 other bands from the
west coast. It's a real life documentary and from what I hear it is VERY
unbiased, truly showing the good and the bad sides of the band and
touring. Anyways, it's called The Cut and if anyone wants more info on
it, let me know. I will be working with the producers to make the
documentary available over the internet and using the internet to give
wider exposure to these bands and their cause.

This the same Phantom Surfers you're thinking of...it's a "new" record
(it's been out for a few years, but isn't from the 60's as the cover
would lead you to believe). This is typical phantom surfer
genius--copying an old record to a T. The backcover is taken from the
Joe Houston surf rockin' lp on crown (which was released in the 60's).
