Subject: Woggles get tough/Garage Links

Bomp Lister GREGORY NICOLL has a Woggles article on the Web which discusses
the new album *and* touches on the bands personality disorders!. You can
find it at the following address. Thanks for the tip-off E.

http://www.cln.com/newsstand/current/v_woggle.htm

This along with the recent Boston Globe Felice/Conolly piece have been added
to the updated 'Prepare To Enter The Garage' links page. It now contains
nearly 150 Bomp related addresses including Homepages for people who
contribute to the list. Thanks to those of you who've forwarded suggestions
or taken the trouble to put so much interesting trash on the WWW.

Yeah, it's them, and it's a new LP. Had me fooled too until I read the blurb
on this record in the latest NORTON catalogue. The band has exactly copied
the crappy format of the generic crud put out by Crown Records, right down
to the oil-painting cover, no-info sleeve (with Crown catalogue on the back)
and label. The only Dick Dale you're gonna find on this LP are the two vocal
tracks, which are, believe it or not, Dick Dale covers! Apparently these
snore-core wonders appeared on many a Dick Dale Crown-bargain-bin record in
the 1960's. Check out Kicks #6 for a story on surf music on the Crown label
("Hangin' Five At Woolworths").

I was watching the farcical bowling film "Kingpin" and lo and behold there
was Jonathan Richman! This is probably old news to you Bompers, but for
those of you who have not seen the film, he was playing "Corner Store" and
"Summer Feeling" in a country bar scene. I felt very funny inside. Very
happy.

The Baskervilles of Tampa can be seen in the first issue of Dodge City
Journal out of San Francisco! There is a picture of me (Rob), Bomp list
Laura Taylor, and bassist Tom. See the savages romp! The Baskervilles of
NYC still need a bass player and guitarist, so write!

I love you all,
Rob

Subject: Jonathan Richman story

When Jonathan Richman played in Tampa this February, he told the audience a
story about "I'm Straight" that I'd never heard before. Someone yelled out
"Hippie Johnny!" in between songs, and Jo Jo stopped. He said that song is
called "I'm Straight" and the Modern Lovers would usually only do it when
there were lots of hippies at shows to piss them off. The original lyrics
were about "hippie Ernie", but Modern Lover Ernie Brooks asked Jonathan to
change them so people wouldn't think it was about him!
I love you all,
Baskerville Rob

Years ago, my sister went to see Jonathan Richman at Tucson's Club
Congress on a recommendation from a good friend. She became an
immediate fan, falling in love with his songs and his unpretentious
persona. She also fell in love with his super-cool belt buckle which
featured a large 18 wheeler! (all right, enough of your Freudian
snickers...I can't tell you people anything!) For months she searched
for a similar one- a- magic belt buckle which would make her laugh and
smile the way Jonathan's songs did. 1-1/2 years later, Jonathan
returned to Tucson. No rock star is Jonathan; my sister spoke to him
after the show about her unfound grail. Jonathan smiled, chatted awhile
longer, then disappeared and returned later with his belt, buckle
attached, which he presented to my sister. His (now) adoring fan. WHAT
A GUY! This is the stuff legends are made of! I can't help but be
reminded of the commercial where Mean Joe Green throws a sweaty, smelly
game jersey to the little kid who gave him a Pepsi. And I thank heaven
that my sister chooses her heroes more carefully. I encourage fellow
bompers to share their Richman stories--good and bad!

were Saturday night"--J. Richman

I've got a Bag of Hammers 7" (Live from the Basement) by a band called
the Screamin' Mee Mees. Can't say it's the best 7" in the world, but it
*is* pretty interesting, as is the story on the back cover of them being
from the St. Louis area... Does anyone know if this is true? Nobody
around here seems to know anything about them. When and where did they
exist? I also saw another EP (Home Movies) available in the Vinyl
Injections catalog... is it any better than the live one I've got?

Thanks,

Has anyone heard The Phantom Rats yet? They're a relatively new garage/punk
band out of Japan who are very Devil Dogs influenced. In addition to a slew
of really cool originals, they do a really wild version of "Red Hot".
