I met Dick Dale at his ranch outside L.A. last spring, and he was a
gracious, unpretentious host. He is a self promoter to be sure, but why
not? How many men alive have done so much for an entire genre of
music? Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music passed last year, so
DD is in increasingly exclusive company as a consumate innovator. DD
let my Japanese friend Ugata (who arranged this junket...I didn't
believe him when he said he had a invitation to visit DD at his ranch!)
play his famous gold metal flake Fender guitars ("beauty and the
Beast"). The tour of his ranch included the barn he built with his onw
hands, and the wild mustangs he trained humanely. Mr. Dale has been
criticized in some of the music press as arrogant, but I found him to be
a very real person who has been around the block a few times (he's now
58!), and is really enjoying his post-Pulp fame. More power to him!
Like many people of his era, he's kinda into new age stuff, but if that
keeps him out of jail and detox centers, what's wrong with that? At the
time of my visit, he had finished but had not yet released his album
"Calling Up Spirits". He told us there were labels that had offered him
alot more money, but he didn't go with them because "They were not good
people". His heart is in the right place. My personal experience is
this: Dick is not a dick, and, young "musicians" who can't bring
themselves up often try to level the field by bringing others down. I'm
sure the Impala's Justin will be selling insurance when he is 58!

"Better shred than dead"---D. Dale

P.S.--Surf Nuts-if you can get ahold of my friend Eddie Ugata's Japan
only CD-"Knock 'EM OUT" by the El Caminos, you are in for a real reat!
It's on Sexcite records...find it; you won't be sorry!

Well I missed the radio appearance, but did catch the show!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Subsonics (hello, Laura), and Clay Reed really is a good guitarist. Gum popping aside, Buffy looked a little more "girl next door" than I usually see her dressed when she's out. Highlights of the set were a mean version of "I Can Only Give You Everything" and "I Love You, I Kill You", which went even faster than the recording.

The Woggles came on and just tore things up. Really, over the past 6 months or so, they've gotten better almost every time I've seen them and Friday was no exception. Montague sent the women's hearts a flutter with "Mule Lip", they went all through the audience, they played most of the new album, Manfred's wit was as sharp as ever and they were just on! My only complaint is that I kinda wish they'd drop "Flash Flood" from their set. I've never seen them not do this song over the last 4 or 5 years. But if that's my only complaint then they're definitely doing something right.

The Twinkies were from Sacramento. probably the first band to cover them
(albeit live only) was Yo La Tengo.

I surmised that Brendan's gripe was with the drab Joe Houston kind of
generic riff R&B (the kind of stuff that made jazzbos sneer at R&B
honkers)...track after track of BLAT BLAT BLAT - da da da da da BLAT BLAT
BLAT repeated endlessly. But even cheap crap labels encompass material
that is endearing in its lousiness, I reckon (as well as unheralded stuff
by genii like Ray Charles). XO Lola

for a good take on the dick dale story, with possibly a few kind
embellishments, check the last issue of discoveries. the cover story is an
extensive dick dale tale. dick certainly embodied the punk/diy manner which
was refreshing. he is a little weird anymore but plays like no one else.

there's always discussion of dick dale over on the cowabunga/surf music =
list.

it's sad to say that as great as he was (he's one of my heroes), he is =
now pathetic. his newer material is really lame--while he still has that =
monster guitar sound, his shows (and new albums) are wank fests. his =
backing bands are usually just hired gun types who i suspect have never =
listened to his old stuff.

one of the times i saw him he played the peter gunn theme about 6 times =
and rumble at least twice. he also tends to play and sing awful versions =
of stuff like house of the rising sun.

what's even worse, he usually refuses to be billed with other surf bands. =
a couple of guys on the cowabunga list have bands that have been =
canceled at the last minute because dick got to the club and said he =
wouldn't go on if they let other surf bands play.

he is also a windbag (which to his credit he freely admits) and kind of =
nuts. for instance, the last time i saw him he went on this huge spiel =
about how the next song was about the terrible deforestation of the trees =
in south america etc... then he played the victor, a song he wrote over =
30 years ago!

However, on the bright side, i recently learned that rhino is planning to =
release a box set of his older stuff, which is long outta print and very =
expensive if you do track it down. i plan to buy this the day it comes =
out.

Subject: Other bands on tour/Kaisers mail?

I'm planning to go to the Headcoats/Makers show at Alrosa Villa in
Columbus, OH, on May 3. I was wondering what other groups in that vein
might be making the rounds round here in the summer or whatever.

I'd especially like to see the Kaisers, if they are still together. On
their last (and first) US tour, they only got as close as Pittsburgh, PA...

Speaking of the Kaisers, what would be the best mailing address to contact
them? There are different addresses given on various albums and EPs, and I
don't know what is the most trustworthy. Are they even planning on coming
over this year?

The group's name is spelled "Twinkeyz" I believe. Watch for a reissue cd
to be coming out in the next few months! A friend of mine has been in
touch with Twinkeyz main man Donnie Jupiter and they just remixed most of
their original recordings as well as finding some tasty live cuts. More
info will be posted as it is available.

Well considering the other Troggs song Taylor wrote was "Anyway That You
Want Me," I'd agree he was probably more mellow than "Wild Thing" would
lead you to believe. Probably just an obvious attempt to write a
hard-driving three chord song like "Louie Louie."
